If someone were to do a shot for shot stop motion reenactment of the movie transformation, 100% synchronized to the movie, it would start out okay but after the hands are revealed it would just turn into a slideshow. You'd hear the soundtrack, you'd hear the sounds of things moving around, but you'd see just a series of shots of nothing moving because the rest of the body is fully formed with nothing left to do.
Speaking of stop motion,

To be fair, the Armada Unicron mold isn't much different. Fold his arms up, flip back the head, then just roll him into a ball and fit the shell halves over part of his torso. Primus has more sliding/rotating bits but still not much difference. There are only so many ways to make a ball.

Oddly enough, I'd argue that the best "ball to robot" transformation in the franchise is the Darth Vader/Death Star.
What about the new soccer ball Optimus figure in the Collaborative line?

imagine having paid $575 for a ******* shellformer
Haha, yeah - what kind of a ******* moron would do something like that? Seriously though, different strokes for different folks, I suppose. If it ain't for you, it ain't for you. But I love my terrible, horrible, no-good, overpriced, shellformer of a Unicron.
I want a robot mode that's not already fully formed under the planet shell. If there's any bot that's crying out for 2007 Automorphing bits and bobs shifting around, it's Unicron. Bare minimum, just give me the classic head reveal. There's no climax to the HasLab transformation.
Fair enough. I agree that automorphing would have been a cool feature, and it likely would have made some of the transformation steps more enjoyable. I understand your point about there being no singular "wow" moment, but I would argue that when he is transformed (in whatever mode) in front of you, it's pretty epic.

Those are also significantly smaller and cheaper. You expect a lot less out of $50 than $500+.

Obviously the G1 Prototype did it right. Just leave ball the same in both modes and use the ring to make the rest of the robot!

The only problem with that figure is actually getting him into planet mode, I had a copy for years and no matter what I do, I could never get him into planet mode fully due to how fiddly he is and the panels that fill in the gaps, never want to go into place, so after a while I gave up and left him in robot Dark Lord mode

Death Star Vader is another total shellformer. He basically curls into a ball and then you unfold a Death Star around him. And then spend another half hour or so trying to get all the panels to lock in. And then the sound effects finally shut up.

I certainly don't deny that he's a shellformer, but I don't feel that the shell pieces are as obstrusive as they appear to be in HasLab Unicron (which I confess I don't own), and so it's superior in that respect. Being a shellformer isn't necessarily a criticism for me. It's all about how convincing the two modes are once the transformation is complete.

That said, I can see why a shellformer might have the issues that Superomegaprime seems to have, but I wonder if that's more of a QC thing, as I haven't had that problem with my own (which is displayed in Death Star mode most of the time).

They tried with the Entity prototype. This version splits below the equator, so the top is bigger to begin with, and then the top expands horizontally. So there was a futile attempt here to create a torso with a distinct chest.

It didn't work. It's still extremely Orson Welles shaped. But they tried.

Cybertron Primus really didn't do too bad a job of integrating a lot of the planet into the robot. He was far from a perfect sphere (by design), and a lot of the planet still ended up on his back, but at least it did look like it was doing something back there.

Primus is better than the Death Star Vader because he doesn't need to be a prefect ball shape, same thing with Armada Unicron, he wasn't a prefect ball shape and that works in their favour
