Haven't CBS and Paramount been a single company in all but name this whole time anyway? And wasn't the fake split entirely voluntary? Why was there any friction toward them re-merging in the first place?
That’s not the merger being discussed, though I get the confusion.
The big merger (actually, more of a purchase) being discussed is Paramount/CBS with Skydance Media. Skydance has been a MAJOR financier for the last several years, and Skydance’s founder/chairman, David Ellison, is looking to merge Skydance, Paramount Global, and Paramount controlling interest, National Amusements. The deal is valued in the neighborhood of $8 billion.
Ellison is also, reportedly, “amicable” to the Trump Administration, which has caused significant friction among the CBS News and more liberal segments within the company (like the South Park production team). Especially with Trump’s frivolous lawsuit still in process since last fall Over how a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was edited
