Okay, so this is a report commissioned by the cultural affairs agency of Japan into Japanese Robot Anime. However, the report goes into great detail not just about that but the evolution of Tokusatsu (special effects shows like Kamen Rider and Sentai/Rangers as well as Ultraman), the origins of design themes and structure, and the cross-cultural appeal of shows including Transformers and others. It talks about the rise and fall of piloted robots, the way the OVA market transformed the industry, the battle between cartoons and live-action for that texture sought by children, and many many other things.
This is a really interesting article, and as it notes in the preface mecha definitely isn't dead. We've got even more brand new productions this year as well as successful movies like Pacific Rim too.
So yeah, grab a drink and enjoy the history, themes and evolution of those robots and heroes that are so well-loved.
