@  wonko the sane? : (09 April 2020 - 09:03 PM)

Meh. Since we felled the big one (managed to drop the bulk of the trunk less than two feet from the pool. on purpose!) it's almost exclusively been used to speed up work that could have easily been done by hand.

@  Darkstream : (09 April 2020 - 04:24 PM)

My wife had that same concern..and yet trees keep falling

@  wonko the sane? : (08 April 2020 - 08:42 AM)

It is. Thankfully, we don't use the thing too often. It was purchased to help take down one tree and spends about 362 days a year sitting in the shop.

@  Darkstream : (08 April 2020 - 08:23 AM)

Sounds tedious

@  wonko the sane? : (07 April 2020 - 06:25 PM)

grinding wheel on a dremel and a lot of patience.

@  Darkstream : (07 April 2020 - 06:11 PM)

What do you use to sharpen it? I was debating buying one of those kits on Amazon

@  wonko the sane? : (07 April 2020 - 11:49 AM)

Wasn't the first time. I probably did it one of the times the chain jumped the blade, or when I was cleaning it or sharpening it.

@  Darkstream : (07 April 2020 - 11:38 AM)

Sounds like something I'd do. I always install things backwards first.

@  wonko the sane? : (07 April 2020 - 07:32 AM)

Not while I'm outside working with the chainsaw. If it's working fine: then I don't need it. If it's NOT working; I use hand tools cause there is a job that brought me out there. No time to read.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (07 April 2020 - 03:07 AM)

You can Google manuals these days.

@  wonko the sane? : (06 April 2020 - 06:06 PM)

I can't. One: we don't know where dad hide the damn manual. Not that he read it either. And 2.) I'm congenitally incapable of reading it, being as I'm male.

@  TheMightyMol... : (06 April 2020 - 01:52 PM)

Lesson learned: RTFM.

@  wonko the sane? : (06 April 2020 - 11:45 AM)

It's time for todays lesson! Did you know there's a wrong way to install a chainsaw blade? I didn't. I thought the damn thing was just blunted, but nope. Backwards.

@  CORVUS : (05 April 2020 - 06:41 PM)

CONTAGION is on my current watchlist. I'm kicking it off with OUTBREAK, and I have a whole lineup of pandemic-based films. I treat this stuff as a fear-innoculant.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (05 April 2020 - 03:52 PM)

My point is that of late, Taiwan's government executed lockdown procedures to great success. Vietnam has done similarly.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (05 April 2020 - 03:34 PM)

Didn't SARS just suddenly stop before it got very far?

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (05 April 2020 - 03:24 PM)

*raises eyebrows due to familial knowledge of SARS*

@  Steevy Maximus : (05 April 2020 - 01:43 PM)

It was uncomfortably real in 2011, it's downright scary in relation to the current pandemic.

@  Steevy Maximus : (05 April 2020 - 01:42 PM)

It is, almost to an uncomfortable point. The virus portrayed in that film was FAR more aggressive and fatal than Coronavirus, but the sourcing and spread and impact hit REALLY close to home compared to what we're dealing with now

@  Maximus Ambus : (05 April 2020 - 04:50 AM)

Actually on the subject, I've hard a lot of people refer to a 2011 film called Contagion that they think is relevant.

@  Maximus Ambus : (05 April 2020 - 01:11 AM)

Ah well, I'll stick to the classic British sitcoms: One Foot in the Grave, Til Death Do Us Part and They Think It's All Over.

@  TM2-Megatron : (05 April 2020 - 12:53 AM)

There's always the original, cheesy as it is

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (05 April 2020 - 12:10 AM)

Dunno... Tonight one of the major networks showed a movie with plagues.. including that listening to their leader causes the first born to die. ;P So nah.. I think the Stand could work. :D

@  TM2-Megatron : (04 April 2020 - 09:18 PM)

That's probably the last thing anyone needs to see, at the moment. Maybe when we get to the end of June/beginning of July and we can venture back out, it might be possible to find some enjoyment in The Stand.

@  Maximus Ambus : (04 April 2020 - 02:08 PM)

I suppose the CBS adaptation of Stephen Kings The Stand will be delayed.

@  Rycochet : (04 April 2020 - 11:26 AM)

We'll always be together. Together in electric dreams.

@  Rycochet : (04 April 2020 - 11:25 AM)

Please remember that in these times of social distancing, we'll always be together however far it seems.

@  wonko the sane? : (03 April 2020 - 12:41 PM)

It arrived! Yay!

@  wonko the sane? : (03 April 2020 - 11:25 AM)

Given how the virus lasts about 3-4 days on metals and plastics, it's about the only way to go about getting stuff right now. I ordered a monitor mount for my desk and the delivery has been pushed back twice already.

@  Maximus Ambus : (03 April 2020 - 11:04 AM)

He ordered it online, says it was to keep those delivery boys in business. I did the same a week ago with some Transformers Studio Series figures off Kapow. Don't know if it's wise or not considering.

@  wonko the sane? : (03 April 2020 - 09:12 AM)

You'd be the first. Everyone else has either been frustrated cause the one they wanted was sold out (like during boxing week.) or rushing to replace something broken.

@  RYNO : (03 April 2020 - 08:53 AM)

I actually walked into a store the other day and just randomly decided to buy at 32inch TV. It was just a Vizio, and grabbed a Mounting Bracket for it. No duress. Just a spur of the moment wanted a TV for my master bedroom.

@  wonko the sane? : (03 April 2020 - 07:31 AM)

Conversely: I've never met a person who wasn't buying a TV under duress... so... yeah.

@  wonko the sane? : (03 April 2020 - 07:20 AM)

I think I've met maybe two people other than myself who count cables before buying a TV.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (03 April 2020 - 05:33 AM)

Seriously.. HDMI splitters and switches are so bloody finicky, but most tvs don't have enough inputs.

@  Maximus Ambus : (03 April 2020 - 05:09 AM)

Just spent a hour trying to get my brothers new Samsung TV to read his Playstation and Blu Ray player only to find he was using a HDMI splitter.

@  Steevy Maximus : (02 April 2020 - 11:07 AM)

I could never master oral bullshittery. But in my day I was quite adept with the written word.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (01 April 2020 - 11:32 PM)

You have mastered the art of Bulljive. You must use this power only for good, or entertainment.

@  Sabrblade : (01 April 2020 - 08:58 PM)

This morning, for one of my online classes, I had to give a positive oral presentation about a play that I hated having to watch. I went into it completely unprepared and just winged it. My professor LOVED my presentation and thought it was excellent. She believed every word I said and honestly thought that I enjoyed that miserable play. Best April Fools ever!

The writing is being done in the US. The animation is the only thing that's French. One of the writers is one the staff of Friendship is Magic.

And what you're describing isn't a fetish. She's a clingy jealous girl, and the character trope exists in both western and eastern writing.

STC Amy was fun. She starts out like current game Amy but matures when she realises Sonic basically only loves himself and becomes the working day to day commander of the freedom fighters, with Sonic as a figurehead to give the people courage.

Too bad this was the 90s so she eventually got absorbed into the Spice Girls/Girl Power meme, including wearing ironic t-shirts and quoting the catchphrase from Barb Wire.

I haven't read Sonic the Comic, but even in the Archie book she maintains her crush on Sonic, BUT IT ISN'T HER SINGULAR DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC.  There are other qualities to her.  She has her own motivations, pastimes, friends, adventures... THOUGHTS... and they don't all intrinsically involve her obsession with the lead male character.  She can think and do other things.  Things that aren't Sonic related.

In all the Japanese written media, like the game cut scenes or that wretched Sonic X anime, there is no other trait to Amy beyond "SONIC SONIC SONIC SOOOOONIIIIIIIC!"  She is completely and utterly defined by her crush on the lead male character and there is positively nothing to her other than that.  Japanese Amy doesn't even qualify as a character.  She's more like a pet.  It's awful.  Sonic Team is awful.

That's really become the problem with the cast as a whole. Knuckles is one of my favourite characters and although that's partly due to STC (he was the low key loner who preferred to work alone but was a happy team player when needed and showed the rest of the cast the respect Sonic never gave them), it dissapoints me greatly that for a decade he's been a dumb idiot who gets treated as a slow minded bungler. The new design suggests that won't change anytime soon but I really hope in future they experiment more with the characters. Lost World had hints of that with Sonic basically causing the problem and the bickering between himself, Tails and Eggman but we need to see it pushed further. They've been trying for the last few games but I don't think they've found the right team to really have fun with these characters and make you wanna see more of them.

I wouldn't say that's all there is to Amy. She sure as hell got flanderized to hell and back in Heroes, but before that she took on finding Birdy's parents for no other reason than it was right. In SA2 she's the one responsible for getting Shadow to actually give a damn and realize Maria's real intentions. Even in Sonic 06 she stood up for Silver against Sonic and in Battle she acted in a sibling like role to Cream and Emerl.

She's not a super progressive character, but I think she deserves more credit than to be called a pet.

And for the record it was a game written in the west that made her invent a fake boyfriend to make Sonic jealous, so.

The fun part of STC's Knux was that he was pretty much duty-bound to be a loner and didn't really mind the reprieve of others showing up to help.

I've tried so many times, but I just can't get into STC. Sonic just seems so thoroughly unlikable, and not in a Aninated Sentinel Prime way. In a "we're supposed to cheer when he makes Tails feel bad and think it's totally great" way.

But then, for me, the defining moment for Sonic for me has always been "what you see is what you get. Just a guy who loves adventure" from SA2. That resonated with me more than any of the hamfisted attitude tropes the 90's era stuff forced out.

I love the run where he ended up joining Tails in the Nameless Zone, with the natives assuming this must be the useless sidekick Sonic that Tails mentioned in all his letters. Tails thinks Knuckles will be angry, but instead he's more than happy to play along and support a charade that gives him a break from all the fawning back on Mobius :D  Likewise the little scene after the big issue 100 where he manages to piss the hedgehog off by telling him he can retire now they finally beat Robotnik.

As for Sonic- it was a choice by the head writer. He looked at Sonic and rather than see the cool dude Sega marketing did instead saw something like the jerk football team captain in a high school movie, a gloryhound who was drunk on fame. It's not my absolute favourite take but it stands out amongst all the character's other incarnations and he could be a good guy when it counted.

Oh hey, another CG show taking place in canyonland. Hooray.

The designs don't move me much, either. The only one that was changed significantly is Knuckles. The rest mostly just has random accessories attached.

The writing that I can gleam from this is mostly like the games from the last decade or so. That being dull and uninvolving. I do, however, Mike Pollock's perfomance as Eggman. The man's a treasure.

I think there's a median between making Sonic a dynamic character and making him a laid back but still cool guy. Stuff like his cockiness getting everyone in trouble in Lost World, the rivalry he had in SA2 being a counter to Shadow's. The exchange between Sonic and Eggman when he gets tricked into getting blown up is great. I also enjoyed his interaction with Chip in Unleashed, and how he's not so much broken up about his new form as disappointed when Amy doesn't recognize him.

There was a phase when they were more interested in telling stories about other characters, but those are also some of the worst games in the franchise or... games that are an ensemble story. Sonic X also had a different set of writers from the games so I don't think they really got his "SA" personality either. He's a lot snarkier and sharp in that game than he ever is in SX, for one.

Well yeah; By this point He's claimed the insult as a Badge of Honor. Even as Robotnik he used 'Egg' in the names of many of his machines, so why not be 'Eggman'? Its hard for a term to be an insult when you're proudly using it yourself.

So I'm not familiar with the French studio making this show.  Honestly, most French cartoons that make it here to the US are uniformly terrible (Martin Mystery, Totally Spies, Monster Buster Club, etc) or just bland, mediocre afterschool timeslot fillers.  I hear Wakfu is... good?  Maybe?  Or it might just be neckbeards distracted by all the hips and boobies, I dunno.

I'm hoping, though, that with this not being written by the Japanese, Amy might actually be something of a character and not a screeching anime fetish incarnate (what is that crap?  Yandere?  Tsundere?  I don't even).  The Japanese weren't about to give her any dignity, so maybe the French will step up.

Wakfu is awesome.

I actually think that French anime is great when it's a wholly French product. Most of the stuff you listed is developed elsewhere. (Totally Spies and MBC are Canadian, Martian Mystery is mostly Japanese)

As far as this series goes, the writing will have to be suuuuuper good in order to avoid all the internet hate and cliches that come a long with Sonic.

None of the games Smith has done for Sonic have been dubbed. The scripts for each game since Colors have been done by the two guys that did Happy Tree Friends. The basic stories for Generations and Colors were already decided before they came on and Lost World was the only game they wrote themselves from scratch, but all three's dialogue originated over here. They didn't dub or translate anything except into other languages.

Aside from that, Smith is, IMHO, the best voice actor the character has ever had and I liked him from day 1.

Wasn't Code Lyoko French?  If you could make it past the terrible character designs and the awful, awful music, that show wasn't that bad.  It's just jumping the first two hurdles that was hard.

Fall of Cybertron will blow your mind. That is all.

Well I don't know if they recorded it all together or anything. I'm just saying none of it has been based on an adaptation of a Japanese script.
