So whenever he addresses his troops, he keeps cracking jokes. Sometimes these jokes are about the blunders he himself had made in his speech the previous day.

@  Nevermore : (19 October 2019 - 01:01 PM)

At the moment, I'm blessed with a pretty nice superior. He's got a military background, but he takes an oddly entertaining approach to it. Imagine a stand-up comedian who accidentally enlisted as a drill sergeant.

@  Nevermore : (19 October 2019 - 12:54 PM)

Another type of everyday absurdity: Imagine you're leaving your workplace for your lunchbreak. Upon your return, you discover that your workplace has been cordened and/or gated off during your break, with "construction site" warning signs everywhere. You go to your superior and tell him: "I can no longer access my workplace! Why is there suddenly a construction site?" Your superior takes a surpised look and says: "I don't know, first time I see this." You figure: "Must be a Tuesday, then."

It's kind of surreal, really.

@  Nevermore : (19 October 2019 - 04:40 AM)

Many of my coworkers are scared to even talk to managers. I often discuss company matters with them I disagree with, and it isn't a rare occurrence that they say "yeah, you're right..."

Amazon in the US has pretty good benefits, though, and even the temp workers had forty hours a week to start with. Even with minimum wage, that's pretty good pay.

@  Nevermore : (18 October 2019 - 01:20 AM)

Oh, the turnover rates are high here as well.

@  TM2-Megatron : (17 October 2019 - 09:45 PM)

Amazon.com and .ca, on the other hand, can be pretty terrible. I know from your squawkbox posts that you guys have your issues with Amazon over there, although you're lucky to have stronger government regulations and a union there. I gather the warehouse workers in the USA and Canada have it pretty crappy, with very high turnover, close to minimum wage pay, and no unions

@  TM2-Megatron : (17 October 2019 - 09:38 PM)

Amazon.de doesn't really have the same issue. I've ordered from them (and UK, FR, IT and JP) several times, and their packaging is much better

@  Nevermore : (17 October 2019 - 05:22 PM)

I'm not sure how it works on the customer's end. As packers, we sometimes have items that are flagged as "overwrap", which means we absolutely have to put them into a box even if they're already in pretty sturdy manufacturer packaging.

@  TM2-Megatron : (17 October 2019 - 03:05 PM)

Yeah, I really do wish amazon had an option to upgrade packaging for an extra buck or something. I hate their bubble mailers

@  Benbot : (17 October 2019 - 07:17 AM)

That's how it works. I just hope my order from Amazon doesn't arrive crushed because they idiotically stuffed it in an envelope.

THREAD NECROMANCY!

So I finally played in a tournament at the local hobby shop for the Oath of the Gatewatch Pre release. Only won about half of my matches, which was more than I expected. But I gotta say when it came to my pulls I won the jackpot.

So this weekend was the Shadows over Innistrad Prerelease. Didn't come up with the same pull luck at all and had pretty crummy luck with my Werewolf deck I made up. Did get some good cards but nowhere near the caliber of the ladies last time.

One card did make me question something though. Tireless Tracker uses essentially a Landfall ability to pull up the Investigate ability but is not keyworded as Landfall. I get that Landfall is a Zendikar related theme but if your going to pull the same trick again one block later anyways why not make it a permanent keyword ability? Then again every Landfall card always spelt out the Landfall trigger too so why bother with the Keyword then?

So with Tireless Tracker Instead of the text before

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, investigate. (Put a colorless Clue artifact token onto the battlefield with 2, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.")

Instead we could go

Landfall - Investigate. (Put a colorless Clue artifact token onto the battlefield with  2, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.")

Being a new ability for now I get the need for spelling out investigate but Landfall has been through at least 5 sets now. Why the need to spell it out?

But then also we could take some of the already printed Landfall cards like Oran-Reif Hydra and go from this

Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on Oran-Rief Hydra. If that land is a Forest, put two +1/+1 counters on Oran-Rief Hydra instead.

to this

Landfall —  Put a +1/+1 counter on Oran-Rief Hydra. If that land is a Forest, put two +1/+1 counters on Oran-Rief Hydra instead

Wizards classes abilities like Landfall as "ability words".  They're not keywords as such, intended as an "evergreen" mechanic.  They're just otherwise normal abilities, with catchy header text just to help categorize and group them and help along the flavour of the given set.

Generally, to make sense as keyword, the ability needs to be able to stand on its own.  Landfall is meaningless without the follow-up text, so it doesn't qualify.

Whoa, didn't expect to see this resurrected.

I sounded robotic because I was trying to effortpost and make a decent thread. I'm still playing, and have spent way too much on modern decks, although primarily so I can loan them out to the younger guys without the money to put together to make decks that are optimized, that play at my local store. Here's a rundown on what I have currently put together:

Goblins, a mono-red aggressive deck. Play goblins, turn them sideways, hope you win by turn four.

Naya burn: Cast spells that do three damage to your opponent, occasionally swing with a creature, hope you win by turn 4.

Mono Blue Tron: tutor for lands that make a lot of mana, cast a creature or planeswalker your opponents can't deal with, or lock them out of the game.

Combo Elves: green and white, get manadorks on the battlefield so you can make ludicrous amounts of mana, and either spend it on getting way too mana guys on the battlefield, or pump the guys up to ridiculous amounts and win as quick as possible.

Living End: cycle big dudes to graveyard, letting your opponent build up some dudes on the ground.cast a spell that lets you flip through your library until you hit Living End, destroy your opponents' dudes, bring your dudes back to kill your opponent.

Torpor Terror: get artifact out that lets you ignore drawbacks on creatures that enter the battlefield, cast undercosted overpowered dudes with giant drawbacks that are negated by that artifact, swing, win.

Amulet combo: 5-color deck that lets you play a lot of lands quickly and cast hard to block creatures or play an enchantment that copies all instants and sorceries for every player, then tick off your opponents by casting spells that make your opponents lose immediately.

Norin Soul Sisters: get out creatures that let you gain life for creatures entering the battlefield, then get out creatures that get bigger when you gain life, then swing to kill your opponents. If you get Norin out, get ready for a lot of bookkeeping.

GW hatebears: cast dudes that prevent your opponent from doing much, sometimes cheat dudes in for free.

I have not played Magic hard core in a long time I did take my some my decks to a local turny for fun here a few months ago

And for fun we played a few games where I would wipe the floor with all of them

Red Burn was still very nasty and after turn three the other guy scooped.

But in team play White Life was so broken I had we had 190 life before the other team just quit it was quite funny because the next turn would have seen us triple that :D

My all chick deck is a little sluggish now but did make a few people scratch there head at some of the mechanics

Banding is the most convoluted load of irrelevant trash I've ever seen.  Giant wall of rules for very little practical gain.

Would've been better off just throwing the offending card on the ground.  Or tearing it up if you were feeling particularly brazen.  "Nobody ever talks about Banding!  Ever!" and traumatize the poor kid from ever trying to learn it ever again.  Net result would've been the same, and this way would've been a helluva lot more fun :p.

The most offensive thing about Banding is that a fair amount of creatures with that ability were creatures like Pegasus and Griffons that would logically make for great mounts.  So when the attack rules for Banding have you "combine" the creatures into a band, it's not a stretch to think that you're essentially "mounting up" your non-flying creature and essentially making a bigger flyer.  But nope.  Counter-intuitively, you've just nerfed your flyer.

Less offensive, but still unintuitive, is how the ability works subtly different depending if the banding creature is on offense or defense.

Oh, to go through the head of the dev who came up with that mechanic (Richard Garfield?).  Not sure what kind of imagery he was trying to conjure up with that mechanic, but it didn't work.

Phasing isn't that really that bad.  Minus the "when" of it, it works exactly as you'd think it does, by making the affected creature "untouchable and incorporeal" every other turn.

Well Magic just put out the rest of their set plans until next January

Sept 2 - Nissa vs Ob Nixilis Duel Decks based around their Battle for Zendikar/Oath of the Gatewatch versions

Sept 30 - Next block begins with "Kaladesh" Chandras home Plane. Not familiar with it so not sure what the theme is going to be

Nov 11th - Commander 2016 with 4 color commanders :doh

Nov 25th - Planechase Anthology, a collection of every printed Planar card and all 4 of the 2012 Planechase decks

Jan 20th - Aether Revolt - part 2 of the Kaladesh set.

But things are getting tossed around for Kaladesh in ways of release. Starting with that set we get rid of the Intro Pack decks in favor of 2 new Planeswalker decks per set. Now while the decks are guaranteed to have a Planeswalker in it, the ones in the decks won't be found in the main set and will be under-powered competitively.

Each Planeswalker deck will also have

Two copies of a rare spell that has an effect and also tutors for the specific planeswalker

Three copies of an uncommon permanent that is enhanced by having the planeswalker on the battlefield

Four copies of a common flavored to the Planeswalker

Four appropriate common dual lands (As most decks will at least be Dual colored even if the Planeswalker is one color)

and of course Two Boosters of the current set.

And also starting with Kaladesh, Fat Packs are renamed Bundles :rolleyes

PAX has let loose more info on next years sets!

So in March comes the 2017 Modern Masters set and the Mind vs Might Duel deck set

April comes the Egyptian themed "Amonkhet" set

June has a Commander Anthology gathering four previous Commander products–"Heavenly Inferno," "Evasive Maneuvers," "Guided by Nature," and "Plunder the Graves"–together in one pack.

June also brings out the next Archenemy set subtitled Nicol Bolas. The set contains four 60-card decks with no new cards, four non-premium planeswalker cards with new art, and a scheme deck containing 20 new schemes.

Finally July concludes the Amonkhet block with "Hour of Devastation"

Oh and I guess Kaladesh is going to be an artifact heavy set. Invention is the word and it seems the intro video has a Worlds Fair showcase type of vibe.

So Kaladesh is an "Aetherpunk" India like plane. New mechanics are Vehicle artifacts, Energy Counters, and Fabricate.

Vehicles are artifacts that become artifact creatures when one or more creatures are tapped for its crew, but the creatures used must have a power equal or greater than the number next to the Crew on the vehicles. And there will be pilot creatures that enhance vehicles when tapped to crew.

Energy Counters will be a power source certain cards will generate and use that will accumulate and not dissipate each turn unless used.

Fabricate is a entering play ability that will either give the creature X +1/+1 counters or put out X 1/1 artifact creatures where X will be the number next to Fabricate on the card.
