@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

The last time I bought a bluray drive, I found out afterwards that the software requires a separate purchased license to play disks.

I'm not sure how universal that is or if things have changed in the years since, but I'd suggest checking in to it before buying.

Yeah, there seems to be some odd copy protection or something, so usual video players might have trouble with them.

I've used a free (as in, downloaded without payments, but not libre) player that worked so far, but it might need regular updating.

It definitely has, but I had enough trouble with it that it was easier for me to just download a new player rather than get all the add-ons needed for VLC or other open source players play the discs..

My attention span is so short these days that they could defeat me just by leaving me alone.

But if they throw up some convoluted obstacles to a task I planned on spending five minutes doing, now I have to do it even if it takes me three days.

I think it's more similar to how mp3 is technically a patented codec and software that plays mp3s has to send a nickel to the owner. Bluray was created and is owned by Sony, and if you buy a PC with a DVD drive, they've paid for the codec, but it doesn't come just built into Windows with every install.

man i just wanna watch my damn kiki's delivery service bluray i've had for like uhhh six years

(btw in case you're wondering why i own that [and a few other bds despite not having a bd player still] it's entirely because getting the bd/dvd combo pack was cheaper than the dvd-only version for all of them)

It's some sort of encryption on the discs itself. (It's apparently a recent development, as older blu-rays weren't so complicated). The video codec is just AVC/H.264, which anything nowadays can play.

you'd think i'd solve this problem by just like buying a bluray player for my tv instead but my laptop literally has a better screen than my crappy tv (literally paid like less than $130 for it back in 2015 or so after my old crt finally died after like 21 years and it hugging sucks and only has a resolution of 720p) and also i literally can't use the tv since the outlet i'd plug it into makes popping noises whenever anything is plugged into it now

...

yeah we really do gotta get an electrician to see what the hug is wrong with the outlet i know, it's been like that for at least the past year and a half. i have nothing plugged into it so i'm pretty certain it won't spontaneously explode or anything.

my house is falling apart basically. see also: having to get our roof replaced earlier this year.

I guess the short version is, yeah, you're probably making the right choice getting the DVD drive, it's just that the software is probably going to be a pain in the ass.

It's some sort of encryption on the discs itself. (It's apparently a recent development, as older blu-rays weren't so complicated). The video codec is just AVC/H.264, which anything nowadays can play.

Oh, huh. Gotcha. That's more annoying than I thought. X /

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itasha

In Japan, an itasha (痛車, literally "painful car") is a car decorated with images of fictional characters from animemanga, or video games (especially bishōjo games or eroge).

Even Japan calls these things cringemobiles.

I think there are a few exceptions but it's always going to look cringey if the character is an underage anime girl.
