@  RichardT1977 : (23 April 2017 - 11:31 PM)

After we get a couple of Pretenders. And a Titans Return Star Saber (not a difficult retool from Galvatron).

@  BlackMax : (23 April 2017 - 10:21 PM)

I really do like all the attention to the 80s toys, being from that era myself. However, I would be really happy if (let's say post Trypticon) the Generations line turns to the 2001 RiD line, Beast Wars stuff, and moves forwarda bit.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (23 April 2017 - 08:19 PM)

I'm curious because I'm not an 80s kid nor have I ever held an actual 80s toy in my hands, but I'm pretty sure a mathematically significant portion of 80s kids here do have a like for cartoon accuracy.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (23 April 2017 - 08:15 PM)

How much of this community favors versus not favors the current Hasbro design team's general trend of accuracy to classic 1980s toys and lack of attention to any other era of Transformers?

@  Fruitloop Mu... : (23 April 2017 - 03:25 PM)

Re The Rise of Cobra: I like bad movies and action sequences involving elite ninjas, so I watched / fast-forwarded through it on Netflix a couple of years ago.

@  Fruitloop Mu... : (23 April 2017 - 03:23 PM)

Can anyone tell me why the Shoutbox has a notification (a "1") when I login sometimes? I scroll through and don't see anything addressed to me. What does it mean?

@  ▲ndrusi : (23 April 2017 - 01:33 PM)

I miss the 2000s when my local stores got new toys more than once a year.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (23 April 2017 - 01:09 PM)

I mean, it might be hard to not know about something before release at all, but the degree of familiarity that you described is only attainable if you intentionally seek things out.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (23 April 2017 - 12:59 PM)

That's at least partially your own fault. The "in motion" part sounds like you even watched videos, which require conscious effort, unlike pictures that might be hard to even avoid.

@  Bass X0 : (23 April 2017 - 12:22 PM)

I miss the 80s where the first time I ever saw Transformers toys was on the toy shelves and hadn't already saw the toy from every angle and in motion several months beforehand. It made seeing a toy in the store something very special to me that I can't recapture now.

@  Evac : (23 April 2017 - 12:14 PM)

I could see Generations becoming a TRU exclusive line, now that I think about it.

@  Xellos : (23 April 2017 - 12:14 PM)

Also, Generations weathered AOE, and the TLK line seems to be short as well, so I think we'll still be seeing some room for Generations.

@  TheMightyMol... : (23 April 2017 - 12:11 PM)

Titans aren't really wide-released anyway. About the only brick-and-mortar chain to reliably carry them is Toys R Us.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (23 April 2017 - 12:08 PM)

Isn't Trypticon still a long way from now?

@  Evac : (23 April 2017 - 11:57 AM)

They wouldn't let a big-ticket item like that get cancelled.

@  Evac : (23 April 2017 - 11:57 AM)

Counter argument: They still haven't released Trypticon.

@  unluckiness : (23 April 2017 - 09:25 AM)

But yeah, not having any big-name media means it's the most likely, although the premiere series packaging might convince retailers to dedicate more shelf space, kinda like SW Black.

@  unluckiness : (23 April 2017 - 09:24 AM)

I'd expect Generations to be the sacrificial lamb since they can't possibly stock RID any less.

@  RichardT1977 : (23 April 2017 - 09:06 AM)

I'm thinking the subline that doesn't have a movie or TV show will be the one on the cutting board.

@  RichardT1977 : (23 April 2017 - 09:05 AM)

Back to TF toys: the question is whether or not retailers will be willing to commit the peg/shelf space for three sublines. And which one will be sidelined if space is at a premium.

@  unluckiness : (23 April 2017 - 06:28 AM)

No idea.

@  TheMightyMol... : (23 April 2017 - 03:40 AM)

Revengeance

@  TheMightyMol... : (23 April 2017 - 01:33 AM)

Some people say revenge is sweet. Others say revenge is a dish best served cold. So basically, revenge is ice cream.

@  Verity Carlo : (22 April 2017 - 05:51 PM)

Retribution is fun.

@  LBD "Nyt... : (22 April 2017 - 05:39 PM)

'Sides, we all know the best G.I. Joe movie is Street Fighter, even if people haven't realized it yet.

@  LBD "Nyt... : (22 April 2017 - 05:39 PM)

I thought it was... okay. Okay as a movie, kinda fun, but not quite really feeling the G.I. Joe. I heard the sequel fixed that, but I've yet to see it.

@  Daith : (22 April 2017 - 05:26 PM)

Not sure about others but tried too hard to mainstream the idea to the public, making Baroness and the future Cobra Commander Duke's ex fiance and her brother was stupid and convoluted, and the power armor was a bit dumb

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (22 April 2017 - 05:14 PM)

What's the general opinion here about G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra?

@  BlackMax : (22 April 2017 - 02:55 PM)

ROCKO'S MODERN LIIIIIIFE

@  Foffy : (22 April 2017 - 02:07 PM)

Did somebody mention wallabies?

@  Telly : (22 April 2017 - 01:38 PM)

"Walls of 'bee". walmart will be changing their name during movie time. they will now be called "walbee"

@  NotVeryKnightly : (22 April 2017 - 12:49 PM)

I'm pretty sure even Hasbro reps have admitted that they went overboard with Bee repaints.

@  Rycochet : (22 April 2017 - 12:34 PM)

Parents/retailers want them, it's cost effective to produce them, therefore they get made. Walls of 'bee may not be what we want to see, but here we are.

@  Bass X0 : (22 April 2017 - 12:29 PM)

That still doesn't justify all the barely repainted Bumblebee and Optimus Prime toys in slightly different shades of their standard color scheme.

In talk about Hall of Fame nominees recently I saw some people comment on Beast Machines Silverbolt being a worse toy that the Beast Wars one. I wouldn't argue that either, as I like the Beast Wars (and his Universe recolor" much better than the rainbow chickenhawk.

This got me thinking, what are the biggest failures in releasing "upgrades" existing characters? One that came to mind for me was Armada Thundercracker and Skywarp. The Cybertron toys were such disappointments. What comes to your mind?

As Silverbolt is my favorite BW/BM next to Rhinox, I always hated the BM toy as it was not a fitting update for the birddog and was happy when repaint of the original toy in his techno-organic color scheme showed up.

As for other upgrades gone bad, I would say Cheetor from the Universe line and Rattrap from the BM line. Seems like Maximal toys didn't measure up once BM started.

Armada -> Universe Hot Shot? I like the updated version somewhat, but it's hard to argue that we went from a slightly-immobile, but solidly-playable toy to a highly articulated, but floppy figure with clearance issues in his back kibble and a Mini-Con that can no longer stand on its own. icon-op.gif

Universe Cheetor and Universe Dinobot are both lesser "upgrades" they do some things 'better', than their original toys -- but one vitally important part is missing... any sense of fun or enjoyment. They're just not fun to play with.

Most of the figures I really wanted to like from Universe (Galvatron, Cheetor, Hot Shot, Dinobot) were pretty awful.

Also, there's the whole deal of Leader Bulkhead, while being a fun toy, just wasn't as fun for me as the Voyager version.

Transformers is a brand that really has something for everyone. We are a darn lucky fandom.

Universe & Classics have quite a few IMO: Galvatron, Grimlock, Cheetor, Dinobot, Tracks.

Definitely Universe Cheetor. I never had original Galvatron, but it's pretty obvious the Universe one is full of fail even without having the original.
Universe Hot shot comes close to being better, but does have some issues. Jolt, on the other hand, has clearly become much worse.

I do like Universe Dinobot better. Those switchable hands... I guess it helps that I never cared for the original mold all that much.

If we can count characters from one movie to the next, Voyager Ironhides.... I didn't think the DOTM was as good as the old mold.

Battle in a Box Prime doesn't seem as good to me as the original toy. And without his trailer, Powermaster Prime isn't anywhere near as good as the original.

I hope one day they retry him in a movie accrate way

I think I want to add some of the Action Masters to this list. I'm not going to trash ALL the Action Masters -- a lot of people really like them. But I think there's TWO Action Masters in particular who are a SERIOUS downgrade from the original toys.

Blaster and Soundwave.

While there's a definite compensation with, say, Snarl, because he comes with Tyrannitron... it's just not the case with Soundwave and Blaster! Those two already *HAD* little partner robots, and their little partner robots were actually way better than the Action Master partners. I really do think Blaster and Soundwave were massively downgraded thanks to Nucleon.

--Andrew S.
(On the other hand, Action Master Thundercracker? Massive upgrade. Action Master Starscream is... kind of a lateral move from the Pretender.)

Oh, I also want to add the original Legends figures -- the Pretender Classics that were repackaged without their Pretender shells. While Starscream and Bumblebee were definite upgrades, Grimlock and Jazz were DEFINITELY downgrades.

That said, add the Pretender Shells and there's no doubting that the Pretender Classics are way better than the originals. It's just those ones where they released them WITHOUT their shells that I take issue with. That's insane.

--Andrew S.
(Also... I don't know that even with his Pretender shell that Grimlock is an improvement. As much as I like the Pretender play pattern, the original Grimlock is just a really appealing toy.)

I fail to see how RtS Tracks isn't un upgrade of the original. He looks just like the G1, but now has articulation and storage for weapons. I think the only weak part might be the flying car mode.

Classics Jetfire is a lateral move from the original Bandai toy at best.

Arm articulation aside, I feel that RtS Jazz is inferior to Binaltech Meister both in terms of engineering and sculpting.

RtS G2 Prime is vastly inferior to Laser Optimus in every conceivable way, and doesn't even have an excuse for the one flaw both share (colors) since he's not gang molded with a huge trailer.

Rodimus Prime is a pretty lame toy compared to Hot Rod.

QUOTE

Well, sure. But it's perhaps no better than the Binaltech version, and arguably worse.

BM Rattrap is by far my favorite Rattrap toy. I really wish we'd ever gotten a redeco of it, maybe as someone a little more feral.

The Ravage that came with Universe Hound is worse at everything than the G1 Ravage toy except for "being three-dimensional", and has a ridculous bird head to boot.

I kind of want to say Energon Rodimus, just because of the weird proportions so it can be a pair of pants. I know some people really like the mold, and while I don't regard it strictly as an upgrade failure, I don't at all see it as an upgrade success. Energon Prowl kind of qualifies for the same reason, although that's not as obvious an upgrade attempt that pushes the G1 buttons like Rodimus does.

As has been mentioned, Classics Galvatron definitely qualifies. I like the figure, but it's definitely a failure at delivering what it promises. Way too complicated transformation that's made worse by it being at a deluxe scale, and which also really kills the aesthetics and leg articulation. I keep hoping we'll get a G1 toon Galvatron recolor of the smaller Energon Megatron mold.

Blurr isn't so much an upgrade failure as it's a non-G1 Blurr. I see what they were trying to do, and I think they accomplished it, but there's still a hole in my G1 movie cast.

Also, Classics Powerglide.

He is boxier, that's for sure. However, I still don't consider him at all to be an "upgrade failure."

I also think he's a better toy than the alternator. The alt had the fake chest and was awful at dealing with kibble. I mean, I still like the mold (especially the Ravage version), but I almost wish they had gone back and put the Tracks head on a blue version of Alt. Sideswipe. Yeah, his leg movement might be crippled, but he's not a car explosion when viewed from the back.

Also, I prefer Animated leader Bulkhead to the voyager. It's a great toy.

I prefer the Alt for the fake chest, becuase it keeps his lithe athletic look. If he wasn't larger then most voyagers he'd be my preferred version.
