Or do Japan's cultural values vary depending on exactly who you're trying to shut down?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:33 PM)

Could it be that, perhaps, these different cultural values might lead to a different approach seeming appropriate?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:32 PM)

Hm. Back when we were arguing about the Legends comic, I seem to recall being repeatedly told that Japan had different cultural values than the US (and therefore anyone who had a problem with anything at all was wrong to voice that opinion ever).

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:23 AM)

Plus, as much as I hate to admit it, every single anime character is built to suit the audience's tastes so they buy more merch/do other things that allow $$$ to flow in the production committees direction, so the authenticity is certainly not for representation's sake.

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:18 AM)

Both those anime air at midnight and are aimed at a very specific audience in a whole other media landscape. Major projects have press releases about almost everything, and there are groups just waiting to pat anybody on the back for doing what they want (GLAAD, HRC, etc)

@  B-Fox : (19 February 2020 - 03:16 AM)

It's funny that a friggin' anime about zombie idols and an anime about a school of anthropomorphic animals can have really positive trans characters WITHOUT a press release about their inclusion in the series prior to the episodes airing or having the creators announcing it on social media and patting themselves on the back for doing a thing.

Well in about five minutes I'll be streaming "Harmageddon"

Been probably 20 years since I've seen this since I know I watched it in High school. Gonna be interesting seeing it after all this time. I just know some find it a classic. Others, a train wreck.

I'm not really feeling this season of anime, I only picked two to watch, the first is the Puella Magi Madoka Magica side story and the other is Infinite Dendrogram.

Rewatched Knights and Magic, still a desent series

I've always loved "playing a video game" anime, but the <Infinite Dendrogram> anime is a bit... too real for me. I mean, you're reminded within the first few minutes that whilst whatever is going on in the game, the protagonist is just like;

OimS1AI.jpg

IRL.

I feel like almost all the atmosphere from the light novel was sacrificed for having everything from the entire first half of the first volume happen in the first episode. I mean, Ray learns what tians are and then is referencing them normally in about 10 seconds. All the dramatic tension and worldbuilding was just... gone.

Done this way, I'm certainly not buying the tension when he's concerned about the death of an NPC. Trying to convince the viewers otherwise, they basically gave him a catchphrase.

Sounds like they are rushing the story to get to what they consider the "good" part!

I just been watching the so called season 2 of the CGI Saint Saiya, or better known as the Knights of the Zodac Saint Saiya, to be honest, its rubbish, the animation looks flawless but the problem lies in the story, I have no problems with them changing one of the main characters from a male to a female, if anything to me, it seems rather natural, but the story, it has no real tension and the story just feels like its going at a brake neck pace to get somewhere, I would not be surprised if the third season or whatever they want to call it, if it happens ends up halfway through the battle of the temples so basically, six eps and one temple per a ep, granted I never read the manga and seen a large chunk of the first anime but even I can tell the story is rushing, while the original, kind of dragged after a while. One thing with this series, I DO not recomend watching in Japanese with subtitles, it feels extremely poor and your best watching with the English langauge verison, at least the voice actors are acting and this series is being produced by Toei but clearly they don't really have the magic they once did. Watch the series if you want but don't expect any draw out battles or spectator fights as most battles are over rather quickly.

Well, I did already get my tix for the showing of the My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising movie on the 26th.

When they played the Two Heroes movie, my friend did not get them ahead of time, we got there an hour early, and it was sold out. Kinda sucks, as the theater definitely had some open seats, but was indeed pretty full.

Not as full as the Broly movie last year, though. They moved the first showing to the biggest (non X-Plus) theater, and it was completely packed. Been a long time since I have seen a non-MCU or SW movie that was that packed.

I'm just getting irked that these movies come out and have no local showings at all despite having a 12 screen theater in town. Of course it could be worse I guess. At least MHA: Heroes Rising is all over the Portland area. The Violet Evergarden movie doesn't even have any shows in the Pacific Northwest.

Tickets for the My Hero Academia subbed showing in my neck of the woods are $20 a piece after tax, which... shoot, at that price I'm just going to wait and blind buy it on Blu Ray.

That's just a line where I go full Boomer and rant about how back in my day ticket prices were... [/Boomer]

I would likely blind buy it on BD if I had to.  Been doing that for anime for decades at this point. [I'd say /Boomer, but I am still technically a Millennial...]

I do not remember the prices exactly, but I do know that the tix for My Hero Academia movie (dubbed) was cheaper than Weathering with You (dubbed) that I saw last month.  Price around here tends to fluctuate, especially with specialty showings like these.

On another odd note, I also got tix to see Miku Hatsune at the House of Blues in Boston in May.  Seen many videos of a number of her "live" performances, so should be pretty interesting.

Tokyo MX Cancels Interspecies Reviewers TV Anime Broadcast in Japan (NSFW)

Surprised it took this long.

Then again, shows like Valkyrie Drive, Monster Musume, and Kandagawa Jet Girls got to do their full runs on TV.

But then;

This is hot off the heels of Funimation canceling the simulcast and simuldub of the series because the American company “determined that this series falls outside of our standards."

Huh, okay then.

I was really surprised that this was getting made when I initially heard about it, based on the premise and what I'd seen of the manga. But then again, Queen's Blade continues to exist (though not on TV, obviously).

Meanwhile I just learned that my precious Nijino Yume is in this show (she even performs the theme song) so there goes my day.

This is one of those times it does make me afraid of which anime fans actually are standing up and defending shows like these.

Ill admit to watching some pretty close to hentai material at times but the sound of Interspecies Reviewers was enough to turn my head away and not touch it. I get it feels hypocritical for Funimation to pull it after putting things like Testament of Sister New Devil or High School DxD, but with having no current way to age gate their streaming service and that being a brand new series that was being promoted its a tad bad on their part. Granted theres no stopping a anyone from looking up those older series either so its time Funimation tries to corral their service together and look at how they need to set some parental restrictions.

This is one of those times it does make me afraid of which anime fans actually are standing up and defending shows like these.

I don't think we need to be concerned with anything, just stay away from it with a ten foot pole. People who choose this as their hill to die on are either not being serious, treating the treatment show (which most of them have never even watched) as an affront to being able to watch shows like this (which is a reactionary position of defiance, not based in much else), or well, are being serious and all we can give them is time (to grow out of it) and/or our ignorance (if they don't).

Honestly, I think the reactionaries are the biggest group here.

but with having no current way to age gate their streaming service

Huh, that's a very good point. I mean, they have Puzzle & Dragons X and Monster Hunter Stories on there (unless they gave up the rights) and similar, so that is concerning.

I never really thought about anime streaming services having to cater to the different demos, especially when a parent is paying for a subscription and finds out about something like this.

But that is kind of a question for Funimation as well. All around there are very few shows under their name that are kid appropriate to begin with. There are the not so serious shonen shows but even stuff like One Piece, Fairy Tail, and Dragon Ball have stuff not quite there for young audiences.

Besides the cultural divide on sexual humor and the place violence has between Japan and the west, most anime isnt something you can sit a young child in front of and let them watch it without some sort of possible social issue that may appear.

Of course censorship in anime has always been weird. God forbid rice balls and lesbians. Gotta make them jelly doughnuts and cousins. Really really close cousins..... the old Sailor Moon dub crew thought that was a better idea why?!
