@  Xellos : (16 July 2019 - 09:53 PM)

Isn't that a kernel of truth.

@  Paladin : (16 July 2019 - 08:43 PM)

huh. suddenly the Squawk is popping.

@  TheMightyMol... : (16 July 2019 - 07:47 PM)

Not placing much stalk in this conversation.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 06:22 PM)

That's so corny.

@  Shrug : (16 July 2019 - 06:07 PM)

It's absurd how happy I am that a post of mine made the front page of Reddit.

@  TheMightyMol... : (16 July 2019 - 05:46 PM)

Aww, shucks.

@  TriBlurr : (16 July 2019 - 05:45 PM)

Not till I taste the corn

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 05:43 PM)

You guys aren't being very nice. You're supposed to tell me I did "good, really good!"

@  TheMightyMol... : (16 July 2019 - 05:40 PM)

Just don't go beyond the rows.

@  Patch : (16 July 2019 - 05:39 PM)

@  Patch : (16 July 2019 - 05:39 PM)

It's techno-organic corn

@  TriBlurr : (16 July 2019 - 05:26 PM)

We have a cornfield? Can I get a few ears?

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:56 PM)

And lastly, if it becomes too much hassle to deal with - it might just get sent into the cornfield and replaced with a Discord box anyway. So cool it.

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Second thing is we do actually have the ability to ban users specifically from using Shoutbox if it's being abused like that

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Hey all - just a reminder and heads up. The Shoutbox has been kept here as a courtesy because it's what you folks like in lieu of Discord - but a few things to remember is that P&R should stay in P&R and isn't really something that needs to be dragged out here in the most public of spaces.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 11:04 AM)

Done.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 10:25 AM)

You can make a new one. I doubt anybody would stop you.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 10:16 AM)

There was a thread but it appears to have disappeared. Might have been lost in one of the older forum sweeps.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 09:58 AM)

Yeah this is pretty much circumventing the fact that we have different rules for political talk.

@  fourteenwings : (16 July 2019 - 09:55 AM)

Okay, so, basically, can we not do politics in here anymore? I mean, considering how often @Nevermore, you talk about your work conditions, don't you think it's time for a dedicated thread in P&R?

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:39 AM)

Scratch that; that's insulting to honest salads. Whatever that was was the text equivalent of hamburger.

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:38 AM)

Would you like some dressing to go with your word salad?

@  Paladin : (16 July 2019 - 09:34 AM)

yes; it now goes "shit piss hug *BLEEP* ^$@^ motherhuger **** turd fart encyclopedia & Socialism."

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:24 AM)

This is an American site, but isn't that unnecessarily severe language? IIRC it's one of the top four offensive pejoratives to English people

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (16 July 2019 - 08:52 AM)

It's amusing how so many (U.S.) wankers in this world love to whine "capitalism good socialism bad!" in the abstract while simultaneously pretending that megacorporations dominating de facto monopolies is anathema to the core capitalistic principle of competition benefits everyone.

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 05:17 AM)

I know Shockwave's super mode is pretty lame and Magnus is kinda greebly but it's not that bad.

@  TM2-Megatron : (16 July 2019 - 12:38 AM)

Though with the luck and caliber of leaders we've had of late in the darkest timeline, maybe it's too much to hope for.

@  TM2-Megatron : (16 July 2019 - 12:36 AM)

Just like democracy, it's not perfect but better than the present alternatives. Capitalism as it's practiced today won't be able to weather the coming wave of automation, though. Best to plan for it and hope for a gentle transition rather than the aforementioned collapse

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 12:27 AM)

Capitalism is the worst amiright? Sent from my iPhone

@  Vexwing : (15 July 2019 - 11:24 PM)

Because the collapse is gonna be just great.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 July 2019 - 10:41 PM)

Let's hope this is late stage and we're on the cusp of something better.

@  abates : (15 July 2019 - 09:45 PM)

Late stage capitalism is the absolute best.

@  TheMightyMol... : (15 July 2019 - 01:33 PM)

So, welcome to all retail, everywhere.

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 01:24 PM)

Oh, and Greenpeace also conducted a protest at a German Amazon facility, to protest against Amazon's practice of throwing customer returns in the trash.

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 01:17 PM)

Right, because with Amazon, it's just the employees that have to step in dog shit while having no space to breathe.[/slightexaggeration]

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (15 July 2019 - 01:03 PM)

At least I can use Amazon without losing the ability to breath or step in dog shit.

@  RichardT1977 : (15 July 2019 - 12:58 PM)

Considering that Amazon is the new Walmart...

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 12:39 PM)

All of my best wishes go out to the brave women and men who have the balls (and ovaries) to go on strike at an Amazon facility in the US.

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 12:38 PM)

Speaking of. Not only are we in Germany on strike today, but so is the fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota!

Overnight delivery is the right of all sentient beings.

@  RichardT1977 : (15 July 2019 - 12:34 PM)

(and is it sexist of me to assume that a character named "Amazon Prime" would be feminine?)

@  RichardT1977 : (15 July 2019 - 12:34 PM)

Whenever she was summoned, she would arrive the next day?

@  NotVeryKnightly : (15 July 2019 - 12:32 PM)

The Scioli and Barber TF vs Joe series mentioned an Amazon Prime.

@  RichardT1977 : (15 July 2019 - 12:22 PM)

Meanwhile I'm wondering why no one's come up with a fan character named "Amazon Prime". I mean, today IS her special day...

@  TheMightyMol... : (15 July 2019 - 11:20 AM)

The Wallet-Eater.

Woah. Unicron broke the site.

Oh man, I totally asked for 12" Cobra Commander for christmas one year just because he had a removable mask.

Joke was on me.  He had another mask on underneath.

But still, yeah.  Cobra Commander's secret identity definitely fed into his "cool" factor as a kid.

Yeah, I literally only have ever had two 12" GI Joes and those were 1993's Destro and Cobra Commander for exactly that reason.  I mean, that's why people pried the mask off the 1991 version.  And why the 1987 movie was pretty shocking, since I don't think anyone actually expected a literal snake man under there.  Rise of Cobra ditches that pretty much immediately in the grand scheme of things.

I once composited the faces of the 1991 Cobra Commander and the 1994 Cobra Commander so we could see his full face.   I'm still not quite sure what to make of it!

What would it look like if you just put the Star Brigade hair on the 1991 face and colored in the eyes and eyebrows?

Bushier, Abe Vigoda eyebrows, mostly.

An idea I posted on the Discord, but I want to see what people think.

G. I. Joe video game.

Half-way point between a Call of Duty clone and an MMORPG.

Each player / account can have up to five characters. You can switch off who you're using as your main character, with the rest being computer-controlled NPCs in missions where that option is available.

Each character is one of three classes: Sunbow-era Greenshirt, Sunbow-era Sailor, or DiC-era Paratrooper. Each class starts with a slightly different skill set, and a different preferred primary weapon.

When a character is brand-new, your options are deliberately limited. You can pick a male or female body template (a la Hero Machine, for those who've used it), their race, their code name, their file card bio, and some minor custom features. Each brand-new character can also use 1 "primary" item and 3 "secondary" items at a time. Primary items at first are the XM-103 laser rifle and the class preferred weapon (M-16, MP5SD, Pump-Action Shotgun, respectively). Secondary items at first are the M1911 pistol, combat knife, smoke grenades, stun grenades, and high explosive grenades.

As you complete missions - either sandbox missions, event missions, or campaign missions - you gain experience *and* boost whatever skills you used during that mission. For example, if the mission had you flying a helicopter, you'd gain in "Helicopter Pilot". The two skills with the highest point totals are your primary and secondary MOS skills, like in the file card.

Gain enough experience, and you level up. This increases the customization options for your specific character, your character's rank, and the amount and type of gear that they can use.

Every so often - say, once per season or even once per major release - there could be a special event in which the winner can get one or more of their characters realized in plastic form and officially inducted into the toy line.

If this was a real game, who here would play it?

Some news is actually building on GI Joe!

GI Joe: Snake Eyes (the 2020 reboot film) has a writer, has moved into production.

Also, a visual concept page for Juan Richard Feliz revealed some interesting concept art for something called GI Joe Squads.  Not sure if this was legitimately explored or not, but it appears to be a VERY Overwatch-like Hero shooter concept.  It's interesting to look at if nothing else, and I'd totally dig a new GI Joe initiative in this style.

Something more tangibly interesting is that after 17 years...Darryl DePriest, the resident GI Joe superfan at Hasbro Management, has left the company.  Not clear yet if this is a result of the previously mentioned layoffs or an Archer situation where he wasn't satisfied with the direction the company was taking with the product.

This could be a good thing, though.

It has long seemed to me that significant members of GI Joe management "gave up" on the kid market after the lackluster results the brand saw in 2009 and the cluster mess that became of Retaliation.  As much as existing fans will piss and moan...GI Joe NEEDS some new blood, and new expressions for the brand are about the only thing left to try.

I feel the next year should be interesting for Joe fans.  I've heard rumors that Hasbro was preparing a GI joe push to pick up the perceived slack Hasbro thought might have happened with Transformers after the lackluster performance of The Last Knight.  But I guess we'll see.  Micronauts was also on the docket for late 2019, IIRC.

Derryl has been "above" G.I. Joe for a number of years now, action as a manager for the Boys Toys division rather than for any single brand. G.I. Joe has always been his passion though, so that's why you saw him still hands-on with any meager offering that Hasbro has put out the last four or so year... He's probably the reason why we got anything at all. It's sad to see him go. He's a really great guy.

But yeah, it's going to be... interesting to see what happens now.

I'll be interested to see what cross pollination ends up happening since Hasbro consolidated a lot of teams together after the layoffs.  Beyblade and Transformers are basically one team now, and I think Nerf and the Games section got folded in together.  GI Joe doesn't even have a team to fold into something else, so I expect it will be handled by someone completely new unless Warden takes it again.

Fall of Cybertron will blow your mind. That is all.

Beyblades are still one of Hasbro's top selling things.  And with some excellent profit margins, since they don't cost much at all to manufacture and go for $5-$10+ each.

The current Beyblade cartoon airs right after Cyberverse in Canada. How deeply invested that entire society is in a spinning top game is just glorious.

You might not be wrong.  Last I knew, the "Emerging Brands" was its own segment with dedicated brand manager.  Depending on how the restructuring applied to Emerging Brands, you're apt to see some crossover with the Stretch Armstrong, Power Rangers, and MASK people.

Isn't that usually how it is with animu that integrates the collectible aspect of the merch into the shows?

Like....

Wasn't the premise of Bakugan basically "cards and ballbots fell out of the sky one day SO WE JUST MADE A KIDS COMPETITIVE GAME OUT OF THEM"?

Yeah, there was a close-up of them in one shot.  Making it apparent that they were different than the originals (that and one being something that didn't exist originally).

Is that Devastator the recent reissue?

Yes.

The rest of the stuff was mostly cardboard printout reproductions.

The Megatron was vintage as it was beat to heck and had a ripped off price tag on it.  Devastator was the reissue.  That's it as far as actual figures go (unless the non-bubble figures were, but I kind of doubt it).

They also had printed out versions of Perceptor, Blaster, Tracks, Sixshot, Trypticon, Swoop (like 6 of him and no other Dinobots), Bombshell, and Kickback.  I think that may have been all of them.  The bubble guys were definitely not real, and there was probably never a store that had Sixshot on the shelves the same time Tracks, the Insecticons, Blaster, Perceptor, and Swoop were all available.

Oh and they had a closeup of Bumblebee on card which I imagine was also the recent Walmart reissue.

Wow that's a mish-mash of randomness.

They've got the WHALE (1984 - 1985), one of the Packrats (1984+), the Sea Ray (1987 - 1988), and the Pulverizer (1989 - 1990) all atop each other at retail.

Were those the only items Hasbro gave them permission to reproduce the box art for?

Pretty sure they didn't care about the actual release dates. 90% of their audience won't.

They probably just wanted something that looked good and was the easiest/quickest to reproduce.
