RG1 is the only piece of TF media that I actually hate.
It's bad because it takes everything that I liked about the Marvel stories and destroys them; it engages in all of Furman's worst tendencies as a writer; its ridiculously bleak; it killed Buster.
It's worse because Wildman's art is lazy and off-model, and all the four-color vibrancy of the 80s comics dies under the weight of Bove's muddy colors. The incredible Burcham/Guidi/Senior covers feel like a cruel joke in contrast.
It's the worst because of its relationship with a comic series that was very important to me as a kid, and because its creators seemed very proud of this vortex of crap that I really looked forward to at first, and found myself trying harder and harder each month to enjoy. I hate that it made me lose respect for people whose work I used to love.
Marvel just had so many weird little pathways and loose ends and minor characters - there was so much they could have done. But instead it was just Furman returning to the same old world-ending, prophetic, pseudo-religious well.
