I just finished story mode on Dissidia. And looking at my previous posts, I see the posts of someone trying to justify a purchase he regretted. I mean, story mode was about as decent as the other Dissidia's, I suppose. Personally it was easier to follow for me, though I have heard other people say the exact opposite.
But there were just too many things that killed it for me.
1. Now I understand this was a port of the arcade above all else. And I understand the arcade version was 3X3 fighting. So I don't particularly begrudge 3X3 fighting being in this...or even the main focus. But would it have been so hard to just cobble together some 1X1 action?
2. A higher level cap would have been nice. Again, I understand they were trying to keep the balance the arcade had. But at the same time, they were also making a game for a home console and trying to bring in the same people who played the PSP games who might never have played the Arcade game. At least, if they were smart, they should have been trying to. Maybe through those people a bone? I mean, sure, if you want to keep the Arcade balance for online play, you can make the level cap for arcade one thing while making the level cap for single play a bit higher.
3. Let us choose our moves. Again, I understand the whole thing of balancing things for online play like they had things balanced in the arcade. But part of any Final Fantasy game, including the previous Dissidia games, has been about leveling up and customizing your characters. I mean, sure, here you can choose your (on the PS4) triangle attacks. But in the old Dissidia games, you could choose all of your attacks. Here it just seems so random and forced upon you.
4. Seriously? No museum mode. Again, all the previous Dissidia games had a museum mode where you could listen to music, read bios of characters and collected summons...just...look at all your stuff. You don't really get that here.
Thing is, most of that stuff I can forgive. I can ignore the level cap and choosing our own moves, so long as the moves we have are decent. But for I'm sorry, 1X1 fighting is a very big thing for me. It just seems like such a radical departure from the previous games that I just couldn't get into. I mean, sure, I understand...port of the arcade...blah blah blah. But I just think they could've tacked on a 1X1 play mode. I can't see why that would've been so difficult just as a tack on. I think something to show they at least remembered there were some PSP players out there who'd never seen the Arcade game and were probably hoping for something more along the line of their cherished PSP memories.
And also the museum. I mean, this just feels very bare-bones for a full-priced release. A story mode, a gauntlet mode and online. The Shop is pretty useless. You get weapons and armor which are purely aesthetic only...no impact at all on fighting. You can buy icons which you get for free with earned treasure chests (and how many icons do you really need past the one you use for your avatar)? And you can buy music to play during matches. But you can only listen to maybe a minute or so in the store. So you can't just sit there and listen on a loop like you could in the old museums. So over all, the shop is pretty useless.
So yeah, I'm kinda going back to Injustice and Street Fighter V now.
