Is there any way to get around this issue?

Or find someone with an old X-box.
Backwards compatability is not something you can get around. It's like putting a Dreamcast disc in a Playstation one. It ain't gonna work, no matter how much you do.
However, they're slowly updating the backwards compatability list. If you go to the X-box website, you can check the lists they have online and if it's not compatible, you're out of luck unless you know someone with a plain ol' X-Box.

And Phantom Crash runs slowly, but most games run as well as they did on the original Xbox.

With the last update dating back to November, I think we'll be lucky to ever get more BC titles.

Whatever mine are both of them work fine - and I've used my old Black Xbox as a default DVD player since launch. and I've used it for hours at a time.
If you are having repeated trouble it might be something else that is a problem - such as are you allowing adiquate cooling of the machine (putting almost any machine directly on carpet can kill them especially Dreamcasts or PS2s ) ? is your power supply prone to spikes ?
I've never really heard that many complaints about the original Xbox except for it sometimes scratching disks.
