@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

Nearly thirty Studio Series figs including the '86 line. "I won't touch that." I said a few years ago when deluxe wave 5 came to my store for a tenner each. My latest one' is 72 Starscream.

The 1988 G1 line up could all have been done as Titan Master things, I figure the Pretenders could be done as Titan Master Drones and Prime Master shells.

@  Cyoti : (08 May 2021 - 11:14 AM)

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:58 AM)

Generations Nightbeat never really scratched that itch sadly; he looked okay, but his transformation was fiddly, his robot mode had far too many bits and pieces flopping around unsecured, and his chest dragged along the surface in var mode. =/

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:57 AM)

I second wishing that we got a Deluxe Nightbeat from TR, mostly because as a kid he was second-in-command to my old Powermaster Optimus for the longest time. =P

@  tigerhawk : (08 May 2021 - 05:41 AM)

Wipe Out and Wilder it coulda been: Wipe Out is down in the dumps because the Scramble City Trypticon was destroyed and left him a drifting to the point he arrives in Legends World, he finds Wilder and both go on a crime spree subverted by their realisation neither gets any joy from it until they stop a violent crook together and become anti heroes. Making the headlights blue would give him a lot of concentrated blue in robot mode with nothing to break it up, and mixing the flame and headlight color wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Sorry you don't like the pink, but my intention was a 80s/90s neon/club/glam kind of look in contrast to the darker "gothier" color scheme I've used in the past.

The blue/indigo on that digibash is one of the most beautiful colors I've ever seen.

i can see why you used it, Spec; it was just awkward to see it used in one spot and nowhere else. i agree with your point about not having the headlights blend in with the flames, and really something from that range would've worked. i'm just more partial to goth than glam though, which may be why i reacted that way icon-fire.gif

and yeah, that shade of blue-violet is indeed beautiful. i don't think i've seen it used on TFs a lot, if at all.

I couldn't agree more.

Seriously, if I saw that in a store, I'd buy ten. Maybe more.

The blue and hot pink clash (pick one or the other) but otherwise, that job is actually pretty dang sexy.

I wouldn't want him to give up either, but I agree that something's clashing. I don't think it's specifically the blue and pink though.
While fine for Spectre, since he wanted it "glam", I think something not glam would be better for BotCon.
Still... it could be MORE glam. icon-arcee.gif pink translucent plastic instead of purple. leave just the opaque legs and spoiler purple (and paint apps on the arms).
an error: The color of his spoiler doesn't match in his two modes. If you change the robot mode (with other matching opaque purple parts) to match the alt mode, he looks more goth; while, if you change the alt mode to match his robot mode, it looks more glam.
and while I personally find silver clashes with gold, I think the gold clashes more with the other colors than silver, which is probably why not all of his silver was changed to gold, but I think it probably should be.
Hrm. It's fun to play around with the colors on all the parts. I like making the translucent plastic of his windshield and flame missile more pink like his headlights.

Maybe if the purple plastic matched the pink headlights...the plastic looks very dark purple in vehicle mode, but a bit brighter in robot mode. Hmm. (I'm only putting this much time into discussing it because it's full of win).

Cybertron Voyager Starscream, eh? I wonder if we're just going to get it normal Starscream colors or what, considering they're already pretty "heroic" (bright red, blue, grey...)

I'd like him to be in colors similar to the original, as while the Galaxy Force does have Starscream like colors (red, black/very dark gray, and light gray) the arrangement and pattern are very much not like G1 (more like Armada Starscream who had a lot of red and black). So I think a G1 scheme would look nice on the mold if it's possible.

I don't know, I did this digibash myself a few years back, and I can't really even hope for a G1 scheme. We've had it so many times already, though it is technically very heroic, Superman-like colors when you think about it. I think they could make it look good, but I'm not sure it's interesting at this point. Same with a Jetfire-like deco, if they're planning to do that.

I'm hoping for something a bit similar to that, only with all new paint layouts (instead of half and half) and either a light gray helmet and a black face or a gray face with a dark gray helmet (none of this silver face and black helmet stuff).

I think he did a good job painting it, but I want nothing like it. I have enough G1 colored Screamers. Classics SS is a good end-all be-all for me. I don't feel the need for every jet to be painted like G1 SS.

While, yeah, it does sound stupid for a toy named SS to not have his colors, but then again I didn't really feel I wanted another SS toy in the first place, or a story with yet another version of him.
