"I was gonna buy some Toyhax labels for Earthrise Auto-Whatsit, but since I'd be disrespecting the artistic expression of the designers, I think I'll just forget the whole thing."

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

If they're redoing combiners, I'd hope they'd keep them CW compatible.  That way you can either build the whole new combiner or just grab the torso/limbs you want to upgrade what you already have.

I'm a little split on a new Menasor. I love combiners. CW might still be my favorite TF line ever, though Kingdom/SS86 are good competition so far. I definitely wouldn't say I need do-overs for any of those combiners, but I'm not at all opposed to getting better versions of any of them. And given how good WfC has been, I definitely believe they can improve on the CW versions. Especially when it comes to Menasor.

It's just that I can foresee that approach ending up being disappointing. When CW ended, we'd gotten all the combiners introduced before TFTM. That was really satisfying, even if Devastator was way bigger than the rest. And through the subsequent releases, we've now gotten all the US combiners other than Monstructor. That's helped the CW combiners end up being even more satisfying in retrospect. We've gotten all the Scramble City combiners, and they all still feature the full Scramble City functionality. I never would have bet on that, but I love it.

So, what will these new combiners be? Will they still feature the CW combiner joints and limb dimensions, such that they're just true upgrades to what we already have? If they feature a new combiner joint system, will they continue to use it in subsequent years for the other combiners? And at one combiner a year, how many of these can we realistically expect to get before they move on to something else?

I dunno. I like the idea in principle, and will almost certainly at least get Menasor, but I'm just a skeptic. If they really do want to do some new combiners, I'd rather see them tackle Monstructor and a 6-bot Liokaiser. And for redos, Devastator and Predaking scaled to match the other CW combiners would rank above Menasor for me.

I'm certainly interested enough to look out for more info though.

One can only assume the movie accurate snarl will be non articulated, non transforming and will only appear in displays for one or two seconds a day.

Motormaster, ehhh. It'll be better, but it'll also have that stupid sunbow cubehead.

I really hope Coronation Starscream, if true, isnt the Earthrise mold with a hat and plastic cape. I dont mind the mold, and the six cartoon-canon characters look good together, but it has its flaws, and seeing what was done with Cyclonus and even Dinobot tells me they can do more to eliminate the nosecone and give the poor guy some waist swivel.

I hate that I would buy a new Defensor without hesitation, but there it is.

I would even buy a new Defensor if Hasbro still, somehow, for some inexplicable incomprehensible nonsensical nonexistent reason, hasn't done a new Monstructor.

Menasor, OTOH, isn't much of a personal favorite. He'd have to look spectacular to win me over; and considering that he's got probably the worst character model of all the Scramble City combiners, that's a long shot.

I didn't know there were any issues, what happened to the Prime set?

Transmetals (you'd think) would be pretty simple owing to the lack of any spring-gimmicks or electronics for most of the deluxe and Mega sizes, though some of the gear-driven parts for a few are unusual for the modern era.  All I have left from the line are Transmetal Waspintator and Tarantulas, amazingly the chrome hasn't worn off of either of them.

I would indeed like a new cartoon-based non-furry head for TM Tarantulas. Otherwise the original toy is pretty much perfect as-is.

The current rumor is that it is the ER mold but with retooled body parts to allow for the coronation pieces to attach to him. And that he'll be a Studio Series 86 figure.

I think the concept of being educated and being able to educate is something that more people need more of in their lives.

No, we don't all know everything but we should spread and share that what we do know.

If I'm consistently misspelling a word, I would want and expect people to correct me as should I imagine all decent people who know the value of good literacy.

Its just arrogant laziness to know you're spelling a word incorrectly and not correct yourself or ignore the advice when people do tell you how to spell a word correctly.

Big if true.

I have a weird feeling about a new Menasor. If it would happen, it seems like a really weird choice from a business aspect to just redo the CW torso meant to integrate with figures from 6 years ago. Also leader size is way to small to incorporate limbs. My guess would be a Motormaster that can just turn into a Menasor alone, with maybe some sort of compatibility to fans who DO have the limbs? Or maybe just rerelease the limbs as a 4-pack?

I dont know, this is too much thought for something that could just be made up.

While I think that CW was a lot of fun, the combined modes leave a lot to be desired, IMO.  Motormaster was, for me, the most problematic example of things just not looking right.

If they took another crack at combiners, I would be okay with Hasbro doing them all in the same package, at a Commander-esque pricepoint.  I would also be fine with having a Voyager / Leader class torso and smaller limbs (think Earthrise Cliffjumper).  Sure, the combined mode might not be as large as the CW bots were, but I really don't need them to be if they're going to look better.  I would be willing to sacrifice overall size for a more cohesive set and a more proportional combined mode.

I avoided Devastator and Predaking when they came out because I was already happy with the 3rd party versions I had of them.  That being said, I'd like to think that I could avoid the temptations of new combiners knowing that I'm pretty happy with the CW versions of all of them.

I'll be all over Dinobots though.

I have to admit, I'd be pretty keen on seeing what Hasbro cooks up if these new Menasor rumours are true. I agree the CW version was probably the weakest of the "base" combiners they put out, so it's a good place to start. The thought of replacing all the combiners, even if it's just the four main Scramble City type, is pretty daunting, though.

But, if they make the Stunticons with their vintage vehicle designs, like they did with Earthrise, they may be hard to resist on that alone (I just love vehicle styling from the era).

I'm not a man of many words.  When I do have something to say, though, I'll try and make it worth your while!

Assuming any leader Motormaster is still roughly similar to a large Voyager and that the limbs are deluxes, we would now be looking at $130 for a single 5-bot combiner.
