@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

Jazz is one of those cases I will very happily fail this game over; each is just too good not to double up on, and offers something different. Updated vehicle mode, powerful and striking silhouette and toy-style door wings for the RTS, great and agile-looking capture of the cartoon vibe for the SS86. I will probably know enough to really make a choice once I GET the SS86, but I'm not eager to drop either one.

Plus, well. The character is too cool for just one body.

Funny how the question of "which one should I keep?" keeps coming back as "both."

I have a lot of Jazzes.  SS86 Jazz isn't going to suddenly make me decide I only need one.

Yes I know it's broken. It's an HTTPS thing and I haven't gotten around to dealing with it yet.

I've been thinking about this since my last post... I want SS86 Jazz, and I'll keep my RTS Jazz - I'll just move him to a different shelf.

On the flip side - if I'm able to find SS86 Hot Rod, then I'll probably try to sell off my TR version.

If anything, I kind of regret not picking up some of the Titans Returns remakes like Perceptor and Kup.  Perceptor isn't on the docket, and Kup is, at best, a lateral move.

But I don't regret skipping stuff like Blurr and Hot Rod.  The TR versions just didn't offer me anything I didn't already have through existing toys, and we obviously see that Hasbro's not holding back on the remake angle for a LOT of characters.

Next round!

The Bros. I personally still really enjoy the classics versions of cars. Lose limbs aside, they work.

WFC...IMO, they missed the target on Sunstreaker but did good on Sideswipe. I really enjoy the Red Alert repaint and Deep Cover looks great as well. Hoping we can get a better Sunstreaker and a clean paint version of Sideswipe in the future as a set.

Alright, lets hear it.

This is much easier now, although at the start of WFC it sure wasn't. But the WFC mold is pleasant and enjoyable, good aesthetic and not fiddly. I haven't had a chance to open any of my Sunstreaker mold copies, but it looks decent in galleries. Plus the fact that they went right for official releases of the go-to redecos gave both molds strength in numbers.

I'm all in on WFC Sideswipe and Sunstreaker now, and the Universe versions (barring exceptions like the Henkei Sunstreaker I got a good price on, and my Cordon and maybe G2 Sideswipe customs) are on the list to go. As much as I'd like to have room for them all, the lack of it has been increasingly difficult to deny.

I thought that the CHUG Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were okay but I love the Siege/Earthrise versions.  Between the two modern toys though, Sideswipe is my favorite, hands down.  It's a fun, clean, intuitive transformation and everything fits together the way it's supposed to.  Sunstreaker is great to look at in both modes but not nearly as fun to transform, IMO.  I can honestly say that I have transformed Sideswipe/Red Alert back and forth the most out of any modern Transformer.

I always hated the old Universe Sideswipe/Sunstreaker mold. The only thing redeeming about it imo is the gimmick of having them both be the same mold.

WFC Sideswipe and Sunstreaker though are both amazing. Sideswipe was one of the first figures that I bought for Siege and has consistently been a favorite, so much so that I bought it twice with upgrade kits for both versions. And Sunstreaker, despite the yellow looking weird in pictures looks absolutely perfect to my eyes in person and the figure itself is one of my favorites of the entire line.

If Earthrise Sunstreaker had a decent gun and a spoiler, I'd choose that pairing. As it is he doesn't unless you get an add-on kit.

So Universe Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are the pair I'd keep. Too bad Sideswipe still has a subpar head sculpt.

This one's easy. New Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are both delightful, sleek toys that are a lot of fun.

As another post noted, the cleverness of the chest switch is the main thing the Universe design has going for it. But I've always hated that foot design where the foot is on the end of an oddly shaped rod, sticking out from a larger leg; and the bumper-kneepads are irritating and ugly. The weapons are anemic. The angular 70s Lambo Countach car mode looks a lot cooler to me than the rounded Gallardo design, too.

Why will we solve after Robert grasps the abysmal winter's ulcer? He may change rural tailors, do you join them? The films, tapes, and spoons are all good and fresh.

i moved universe sideswipe, red alert and sunstreaker to the redundant bin as soon as i saw we getting wfc ones. they were good for the time, but i never really liked them. the head sculpts were bad, their "guns" were laughable and the chest gimmick was a pain to keep straight. and the transformation wasnt very fun either

Every single time I list off the negatives of the Universe Sunstreaker mold, my mind counters it with the same one positive.

"Those arms are scrawny with giant panels on them that don't even lock in."  "But that head reveal."
"His feet are terrible and he falls over constantly on your shelf."  "But that head reveal."

"The transformation is just fiddly enough to not be fun or intuitive and uses your least favorite type of locking tabs to hold together."  "But man, that head reveal!"

I have to go with the WFC toys again. These new figures just continue to blow me away. I am slowly but surely replacing my CHUG collection with these new figures! Even toys that I thought I would never upgrade are getting put up on a higher shelf.

ok, the Lambros are a bit more difficult. the Siege/Earthrise my definitive versions of those characters. buuut i need a reason to keep a version of the 2008 mold in my collection.

so what are the other options?

Red Alert: same deal as Sideswipe, better repped by the Siege toy.

Breakdown/G2 Breakdown as made by Funpub: better repped by the Combiner Wars toys that actually function as combiner limbs.

Punch/Counterpunch: better repped by the potp/Galactic odyssey toy.

so maybe repurposing the 2008 Sunny and Side by head and fist swapping to make Diaclone version......, oh Selects did Diaclone versions of the newer toys. bugger.

so i decided to keep Funpub Punch/Counterpunch and slapped a Star Seeker logo on him

I would be remiss in not taking this opportunity for some self-promotion.

Of course, I'm not the only one who's given it a shot.  I especially like this one since Sunstreaker's pretty short on 5mm ports.
