@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

So I was redoing a shelf tonight. And I was looking at some of the latest figures with Siege and Earthrise and got to thinking about selling off some G1 toys. It was also part of a discussion in the studio series thread where somebody talked about how the new Hot Rod or Cyclonus are now the perfect collector piece and there isnt a need to really buy a an updated G1 version again.

So where I got to thinking about selling G1 toys is for example Scorponock. I ordered the reissue, do I really still need the G1? Same for Omega Supreme. Star Convoy. Power master Prime. For me, those were either all reissues or ones I have bought from eBay over the last 15 years. So they dont have any real sentimental value like my G1 Galvatron and Sandstorm that Ive had since the 80s. So why keep them if I have these newer, better articulated versions? Anybody else been have these lines of thought?

CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG!

...I'm sorry, what was the question again?

Ah, right, new versus old. Not really an issue I've run into, personally, as most of mine are newer fare. Even when there's a new version of an older toy I own, I often find there's something about the old that the new lacks.

While I'd take new Scorponok over the old, you brought up Powermaster Prime. I had the original as a kid and have a version of the TR toy, and while I like TR's look and articulation, I miss having the smaller robot, and the original base mode was a bit better, IMO.

Omega Supreme, the new one looks better to me, and is trading a motorized gimmick I'd never use for articulation, Countdown, a better look, and if I'm not mistaken, fewer pieces.

Star Convoy, I'd want both. The new one captures the robot mode look well and has a smaller OP that reminds me of his Action Master self, but the truck mode just looks about the same as always, while I really love the or's truck mode and base mode. Plus, he has Micromaster Hot Rod!

Incidentally, I feel like if you were pitting old Fort Max vs new, old is the way to go.

I dont have an extensive G1 collection, and while space is an issue, its not enough of one for me to consider selling those figures off yet, so with that in mind, heres my take:

The figures that I have in both G1 and CHUG show a Then-and-Now history of the brand. Some of them are significant characters, for others, the significance might only be for me, but I can compare the old figures to the new ones and show how Transformers have evolved over the years. And that is kind of where my collection is at: its not complete, never will be, but theres a mix of figures from all eras like a mini-museum. Thats why I would keep the G1s even if better figures exist.

With the exception of Optimus, Megatron, Shockwave, and Omega Supreme, I sold off pretty much the entirety of my G1 collection in sections over a 15 year period. I didn't display them, and nostalgia wasn't a sufficient excuse for me to continue hanging on to them.

My G1 toys were played with so they really haven't lasted since I was a bit rough with them as a kid, and the few that I  still have are broken in some capacity.     I did later on get a full G1 Megatron before the movies & stricter regulations came out, and he's still all in one piece-all accessories because I had collectors brain.    I do intend to still get a Masterpiece Megatron.

I do appreciate that I've pretty much got G1 in a more articulated-updated format through CHUG WFC etc.    I think they are definitely going to be a bit more studier than their G1 ancestors (well okay sometimes...).

I have thought about eventually getting Masterpieces as replacements for the G1, but honestly I've only gotten the mainstay ones that were pretty much prominent when I was a kid.

After finally getting out pretty much all of my TFs I am thinking the same thing, except the G1 feels like it provides such a variety of sizing that its fun to look at. The CHUG scale is *so* samey that seeing it all at once was kind of jarring.

I think it depends on what the goal for your collection is. If it's to have the best possible version of a character, then replace them. But I kind of feel like this is sort of like a dog endlessly chasing it's own tail. Because, outside of a few characters, as long as the line exists there will always be something "new and better".

Personally I'd never replace my G1's with new figures because that's not why I collect them. My G1's satisfy my inner 11 year old who always wanted those toys. And since I don't "play" with them it doesn't matter how articulated or show accurate or whatever they are.

I've had to sell a lot of toys over the years for various reasons.  Medical Bills, divorce, et al.

It does ease that loss when I can buy a new version of that older design that's just better in about every category.  It does make me feel better about things.

I love the updated stuff but I feel like there's just too much nostalgia for my G1 toys to ever sell them off, regardless of how cool a modern update might be.  I have a lot of good memories tied to them, both as a kid and as an adult collector.  Due to space issues, I can't display them all, all of the time, but I love what they represent and I love knowing that they're there.

Due to a mix of economics and play value, I have largely replaced all my G1 stuff.  I sold off most of it when I had financial issues and managed to pay for an entire semester of college with most of it.  All I have left is a G1 Steeljaw, Slugfest, and the wings from my first Transformer, Thundercracker.  My nephew is now into Transformers but is still a bit careless, and like it or not a lot of G1 toys just weren't that durable (I remember when I was five and my toddler sister pulled the arm off Optimus Prime (G1) and started chewing on it, ball joints weren't a thing back then...).  I actually have quite a few Combiner Wars, people complain about their 'accuracy' issues but for the most part, they could survive a fall!

I have had most of my G1 stuff boxed up for a while now. What isn't boxed up is either in my G1 Predacons on the Predaking shelf or is in my Daughter's TF toybox.

I really need to get more space for my stuff. I have been thinking more and more about getting a building built int he backyard to be my mancave/toyroom.

There are a handful of G1 figures that I don't ever want to part with. Those are cases where I love the character, and so enjoy getting multiple versions of that character. There are even a smaller handful of G1 figures I don't currently have, but would still like to get.

Aside from those special cases though, I've been moving away from the G1 toys for a long time. I did finally sell off my original Megatron to help fund my Unicron. I kept the reissue that I bought new, but the '84 figure was one I bought off eBay in the '90s, not the one I had as a kid. (A friend broke that one back when he was still pretty new.  :( ) And I've been getting pretty tempted to start pulling some more G1 figures out of storage to try selling them off, including some I was pretty happy to get just a few years ago.

...OK, maybe it's been more than a few now.  :doh

For me it’s mostly a character like G1 Scorponock and maybe Trypticon. I have the Titan versions of them now. For scaling purposes they just work a lot better. So I was mostly curious if others thought the same way.

Hahahaha. Sorry Broadside. Someday we will get a good version of you and Tidal Wave.

But to piggyback on my last post. It’s also I don’t really have sentimental attachment. Trypticon is a Reissue. Scorp I bought on EBay because he is cool. But the Titans version is cooler. I need to go through my G1 collection and see what I could really stand to part with.
