Spotlight: Lioconvoy?

@  Bass X0 : (18 June 2021 - 04:15 PM)

How long until IDW puts out an Optimus Pride Month comic?

@  Cyoti : (18 June 2021 - 03:32 PM)

Even with B5, it didn't follow its original 5-year plan. Summaries from the supplementary materials for the scriptbooks demonstrates that was originally planned was very different from the actual product. Sinclair's actor's departure seemingly changed the show to the point that the stuff with the Vorlons/Shadows, the Minbari and the ending were all changed. Mapping out a show years in advance is difficult because of changing bts stuff like writers/actors leaving the show or suddenly having to retool because of ratings/execs. No plan survives intact especially in a chaotic environment of television production.

@  Rycochet : (18 June 2021 - 11:27 AM)

To be like Babylon 5, you need to cram a 2 season story arc into one because you fear being cancelled, then get further seasons you have no more material for. You also need a spinoff which the network heads don't want and do everything in their power to kill it while it's on air.

@  wonko the sane? : (18 June 2021 - 10:33 AM)

The required effort is probably why we don't have babylon 6; TNG.

@  Dekafox : (18 June 2021 - 10:23 AM)

Everyone wants to be like Babylon 5 but no one wants to put in the effort

@  Nevermore : (18 June 2021 - 09:36 AM)

And then, after five years of hosting their own official podcast where they would answer fan questions and always encouraged their audience to pay attention to the mysteries, after the show had ended, they claimed the show was never really about the mysteries, it was all about the characters.

@  Nevermore : (18 June 2021 - 09:34 AM)

What really bugs me with "Lost" is that the producers had willfully negotiated a set end date with the network halfway through season 3 (the show ended with season 6, as planned) specifically so they could plan out the plot for the remainder of the show. Then... the plot wasn't resolved properly.

@  tigerhawk : (18 June 2021 - 04:17 AM)

By then I had lost interest in arc TV shows, I followed a few and got the impression they were just making them up as they went along. Seemed to be a trend starting with new Galactica and Lost though in actuality began with The X Files and has become a trope called 'The Chris Carter Effect'.

@  Nevermore : (18 June 2021 - 02:12 AM)

I think it was season 3 part 1 specifically, since they had two separate plot "arcs" for season 3.

@  Nevermore : (18 June 2021 - 02:11 AM)

They threw everything in there, with no clear story structure, no clear stakes, and characters flip-flopping wherever the episode's writer needed them to go for their half-baked plot.

@  Nevermore : (18 June 2021 - 02:10 AM)

Season 3 was the worst, with a terrible meandering random events plot.

@  tigerhawk : (17 June 2021 - 11:59 PM)

'save the cheerleader' then in season 3 he tears her skull open, scans her power and she simply heals. They didn't think any of it through.

@  Shockwave 75 : (17 June 2021 - 07:04 PM)

Well, you know Hollywood; if something's popular, run it into the ground!

@  Cybersnark : (17 June 2021 - 04:40 PM)

And then there was the Writers' Strike, which isn't the show's fault.

@  Cybersnark : (17 June 2021 - 04:40 PM)

Yeah, Sylar should've been, if not killed off, at least left to rest.

@  Nevermore : (17 June 2021 - 03:43 PM)

It never truly recovered from that.

@  Nevermore : (17 June 2021 - 03:43 PM)

From the front page.

Warm up your transwarp drive and grab some drive-through, because we’re heading to the bygone era of 1995 to catch a glimpse at Transformers history! To a time before it was even called…BEAST WARS!

Thanks to Nathan at RoboticPlanetToys on Instagram who acquired a McDonald’s Happy Meal toy presentation binder at auction and has given us scans of the Transformers content within. I say “Transformers” because not only do these concept pages use the Generation 2 logo, the name “Beast Wars” was seemingly not decided upon yet, as it appears nowhere in the document. While we know Hasbro/Kenner initially intended Optimus Primal and Megatron to be the original G1 characters before the show opted to make them new individuals, this document reinforces that, as this predates the change from “Prime” to “Primal” in the toyline proper. Also noteworthy is this was apparently before the faction name “Maximal” was decided upon, as the document states Megatron leads the Predacons while Optimus Prime leads the “Cyberbeasts”.

In the earliest part of the document, several sketches of what would become mainline toys are featured, some with preliminary names, such as Snapper being referred to as “Buzzsaw, and Scorponok being labeled as “Shockwave”. However, the most interesting thing in this section is the design that would become Cheetor being referred to as “Prowl” while utilizing the color scheme reminiscent of the McDonald’s toy that would ultimately see release as “Panther”. It’s often been suspected that the decision to deco the deluxe toy that became Cheetor as a cheetah may have been a decision that occurred after the sculpting phase was complete; it seems it may have originally been intended to be a panther version of G1 Prowl, which would explain Cheetor’s very Prowl-like head sculpt.

Also mentioned in the document is the pitch for “Auto-rollers” as the potential auto-transformation gimmick (another carry-over from G2), including four vehicle mode ones, which unfortunately were not included in the document; though Nathan managed to grab an image of the moon buggy Prowl from another auction listing.

Check out the images which include concept sketches of toys that saw release, some that didn’t like sea turtle and dragonfly versions of Megatron, and some that were originally conceived as different characters—like the Predacon Manta Ray who was originally intended to be Optimus Prime! Oh, and a concept sketch for a lion Optimus Prime that pre-dates Lio Convoy, as well as the evolution of the Under-3 toy from a G1-themed Optimus to the lion head that ultimately saw release!

The most interesting part is that I'm pretty sure this is the first time we've ever gotten the exact production run for mainstream product. 46 million across the whole campaign - more than 6 million per type. And as big as McD's is, even that isn't fully mass retail!

If these characters were meant to be the G1 guys, I wonder how we would have explained Prowl back from the dead.

Somewhere in our multiverse, fans are debating whether BW Prowl is the same guy from the G1 cartoon or his reincarnated spark. Id love to see that universe for a few moments. Bet its more heated than FiRRiB.

That pre-Cheetor being Prowl provides some insight into this:

BWRConcept01.jpg

This artwork was scanned from the Beast Wars Reborn Golden Disk CD-ROM, and when it recently appeared in the Beast Generations book the book's text accompanying it referred to its beast mode as a cougar.

I think the concept of being educated and being able to educate is something that more people need more of in their lives.

No, we don't all know everything but we should spread and share that what we do know.

If I'm consistently misspelling a word, I would want and expect people to correct me as should I imagine all decent people who know the value of good literacy.

Its just arrogant laziness to know you're spelling a word incorrectly and not correct yourself or ignore the advice when people do tell you how to spell a word correctly.

It's fascinating just how early in the development of BW they were already working on this Happy Meal promotion. Also, virtually all of their concept designs look way too complex for a Happy Meal toy, although by the point of the three-view drawings, they look basically like the final iterations.

Also, every version of Megatron shown here is amazing.

Crocodile Megatron, Dragonfly Megatron, Turtle Megatron... Bat Optimus Prime, Lion Optimus Prime, Manta Optimus Prime... It's like at this point they didn't really care about having an animated series and just wanted to have a toyline jam packed with variants.

Manta Ray is Optimus Prime is wild, both because I never would have known from the design and because it suggests the McD toys have actual names that somehow got left out along the way.

The same way they explained how Grunt came back to GI Joe from an alternate dimension :p

Besides, wasn't he still alive in the comics at that point?  Frankly, by 1995, I'm not sure fictional consistency was as important as the retainment of character and IP rights.

Still fascinating that Transformers was still in flux with its direction in the spring of 95.  I know the first shipments of Beast Wars would hit shortly after the turn of the year, but to see them still discussing the vehicle segment is interesting.  I can't help but wonder if McDonalds' decision to go with the animal toys wasn't another impact in the decision to completely scrap vehicular Transformers the following year.

I'm really excited to finally be able to share these. Nathan showed me a few pages of this back in July 2019 and I've been occasionally prodding him to get the document scanned. So often this stuff is just lost to private collections and I'm really grateful he was willing to share it.

Kenner did have a tendency to do that, most notably with Batman.

Manta Ray is Optimus Prime is wild, both because I never would have known from the design and because it suggests the McD toys have actual names that somehow got left out along the way.

As we see here, Manta Ray and Under-3 were both going to be Optimus Prime/Primal and Panther was going to be Prowl.

Judging by their heads, Beetle and Rhino were going to be Megatron and Rhinox.

Presumably the change from that to nameless new characters happened when Hasbro/Kenner decided they weren't going to have Optimus and Megatron get new beast modes every wave after all.

Manta Ray was Optimus Prime.

It's bonkers but now I can't unsee the resemblance to Bat Optimus Primal. Still has the bBatman gloves and a cape.

Now I'm eyeing Terragator with suspicion. One of Megatron's bodies is a crocodile with a tail gun, and it turns out they planned a turtle body for him. Years later they made a guy who's a crocodile and a turtle and still has a tail gun. Did they come up with the idea for Fuzors way earlier than we thought and just kick it down the road a few years? Were they originally going to be upgraded bodies for existing characters before Transmetals took that role instead?

This stuff is always so interesting to me, this is the first time I've seen the spring loaded Basic called a Fold Out Transformer, and Scorponok (then Shockwave, woah) being one of them and I now can't unsee the similaritys between Bat Primal and Manta Ray.

Now I am sad that there's never actually been a sea turtle Megatron.

One thing I find fascinating is Sea Turtle Megatron with his purple and sea foam green colors, as the box art for Orchnoch has a mystery Maximal on it where all we can see is a turtle shell with they're green and I think blue colors, it always made me want Snapper slightly remolded as a Maximal sea turtle.

Somebody is going to color that cheetor model as Panther Prowl in G1 Prowlish colors at some point yes?

ZacWilliam, or at least in Mc Panther colors

Not gonna lie, my first thought reading about Prowl was that I want to see Kingdom Cheetor repainted into McPanther (as well as, darn it now I want scouts of all the mcdonald BW toys in Kingdom).
