@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

Actually heard a car with that electric, scifi-hum to it. Made me realize that we kinda are living in the future...

Nearly thirty Studio Series figs including the '86 line. "I won't touch that." I said a few years ago when deluxe wave 5 came to my store for a tenner each. My latest one' is 72 Starscream.

@  tigerhawk : (10 May 2021 - 02:56 AM)

The 1988 G1 line up could all have been done as Titan Master things, I figure the Pretenders could be done as Titan Master Drones and Prime Master shells.

@  Cyoti : (08 May 2021 - 11:14 AM)

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:58 AM)

Generations Nightbeat never really scratched that itch sadly; he looked okay, but his transformation was fiddly, his robot mode had far too many bits and pieces flopping around unsecured, and his chest dragged along the surface in var mode. =/

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:57 AM)

I second wishing that we got a Deluxe Nightbeat from TR, mostly because as a kid he was second-in-command to my old Powermaster Optimus for the longest time. =P

This looks awesome. I was hoping Josh would get a book eventually. Always loved the style of his art.

-ZacWilliam, curious about the bat there. Sonar?

It looks nothing like Sonar's design, and more than a little like bat Optimus Primal, and "make the Primal toy that is never going to be on the shelf as Primal into some other guy" feels like a very aimed-at-adult-fans kind of move.

On the other hand, there's probably no reason the "some other guy" couldn't be a non-Transmetal version of Sonar.

Yes I know it's broken. It's an HTTPS thing and I haven't gotten around to dealing with it yet.

True enough. And I'd rather see that than a back-constructed pre-TM2 Sonar that looked like her TM2 body, when that's extremely not how TM2 bodies worked.

Dissapointed that this is both a reboot but also still a time travel plot. Furman dropping the 4 million year old crash was invaluable for IDW1 establishing its own unique voice and I was hoping for something similar here.

fully expect this to have ten times the quality and one/fiftieth the attention of the inevitable "Kingdom" Netflix series.

Yeah that was the thought.

I've also seen "un-Beast Machined" Nightscream suggested but that feels less close than Sonar.

-ZacWilliam, entirely new character is also great. On first look I missed the wings and thought they were maybe a kangaroo.

Getting the guy who can't draw a curved line to make a comic about organic and round Transformers is a weird choice, but ok.

Josh has been doing BW art and posting it a bunch recently so I was hoping for exactly this.

His stylization is just wonderful at giving feeling, life and personality to everything, and it being a very different look for BW is also great, because I love seeing them through a new style.

-ZacWilliam, Can't wait to see more.

I anticipate much gnashing of teeth and #notmyBeastWars hashtagging over the new look and lack of connection to the cartoon continuity.

Because Heaven forbid that we actually get something new and original for a Beast Wars story.

I think the concept of being educated and being able to educate is something that more people need more of in their lives.

No, we don't all know everything but we should spread and share that what we do know.

If I'm consistently misspelling a word, I would want and expect people to correct me as should I imagine all decent people who know the value of good literacy.

Its just arrogant laziness to know you're spelling a word incorrectly and not correct yourself or ignore the advice when people do tell you how to spell a word correctly.

Random guess the bat is Primal's daughter, that's why she looks like his bat toy.

I heard the bat was female that's where I got the idea.

New character is named "Nyx".

Oversized First Issue Debuts in February 2021, with Story and Art by Transformers Comic Alums Erik Burnham and Josh Burcham

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 9, 2020) – For an entire generation of Transformers fans, their first experience with “Robots in Disguise” was through the Transformers: Beast Wars television show, debuting in 1996 as the cutting edge of computer generated children’s entertainment. In 2021, IDW will honor the 25th anniversary of this monumental moment in Hasbro’s storied Transformers franchise with the launch of an all-new Transformers: Beast Wars comic book series!

Written by Erik Burnham (Transformers/Ghostbusters) with art by longtime Transformers artist Josh Burcham (whose credits include IDW’s ongoing series, Galaxies, the Wreckers saga, and much, much more), the new series will launch in February with a #1 issue containing 30 pages of story and bonus content.

The Transformers: Beast Wars comic series will welcome fans to a future Cybertron populated by scientific-minded Maximals and action-oriented Predacons. When the successor to the Megatron name steals a golden disk and a ship capable of traveling through time, only Optimus Primal and a team of Maximals — Rattrap, Rhinox, Cheetor, and a new character Nyx — can stop them.

“Beast Wars was a wonderful and weird pivot from the Transformers setup to which I was first introduced. Big personalities, unexpected twists, and actual stakes all popped up regularly on the show, and those are tools that I enjoy using to build new stories,” says Burnham. “Best of all, the enthusiasm from everyone involved in this project has been so high that I'm feeling constantly inspired!”

“I'm so thrilled to be a part of this team,” says Burcham. “I was a ‘90s kid and even though I knew about Generation 1, Beast Wars was really my G1. It's still my favorite iteration, and I consider it such a privilege to be able to bring the characters to life in this brand new series. Let the Beast Wars rage on!"

“Beast Wars is a beloved part of the Transformers legacy,” says editor David Mariotte. “That’s why we couldn’t pass up launching a new series in tandem with the 25th anniversary! Erik and Josh are going to take everything that’s beloved about Beast Wars — the characterization, the drama, the jokes — and start fresh with a series that will feel at home for fans of 25 years and first-timers alike.”

Transformers: Beast Wars #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Josh Burcham, Cover B by Fico Ossio (Optimus Prime), and two Retailer Incentive editions featuring art by Dan Schoening (Transformers/Ghostbusters) and Nick Brokenshire (Star Wars Adventures), respectively.

Nyx... O-nyx?  Onyx Primal?

I mean, it's the goddess of night, of course, but the combination of name and bat-body does make the Onyx Primal thing just a little bit curious...

Until it just turns out to be another cosplaying Shockwave, anyway.
