@  CORVUS : (17 May 2021 - 08:41 AM)

"I was gonna buy some Toyhax labels for Earthrise Auto-Whatsit, but since I'd be disrespecting the artistic expression of the designers, I think I'll just forget the whole thing."

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

Nearly thirty Studio Series figs including the '86 line. "I won't touch that." I said a few years ago when deluxe wave 5 came to my store for a tenner each. My latest one' is 72 Starscream.

Walmart doesn't care it seems. :/

I've been periodically checking in the small hope they're going up.

In fact, it seems like none of Friday's reveals are listed at Walmart.com yet. And I don't buy the excuse that they allegedly were scalped within seconds. The Kingdom wave 1 figures are still listed.

Reached for comment, Walmart said "Suck it. We want you wandering our aisles in need of a comfort purchase no matter what, and that's what you'll do."

It's like a drawing that you can enter without initial cost, but with fees afterwards.  You put in your entry and if you win you have a toy show up and they charge you for the entry, if you loose you don't pay anything (unless they mail your order to the wrong state for some reason).

This system is actually how a lot of limited-license lotteries work, you register for the drawing first, then if you win you have to buy the license,

I wouldn't trust Wal-mart pre-orders to not be cancelled anyway....

Sooooo...I already have all the TakTom Legends Headmasters...but thanks to that G1 packaging I'll be picking them all up again once they hit the shelves in my area.

Unfortunately the closest Walmart is pretty far away, so I really don't have a choice.

(Not that I've ever managed to even get one of the preorders)

Other than the heads, is there any difference between these and the TR releases, deco-wise?

Oh hell yeah, they're done in a full-on toy-based deco, looking drastically different to the Titans Return releases and even looking different to the Legends releases, featuring more saturated, 80s toy plastic colors

They even gave Hardhead tons of extra paint on the side of his tank treads and extra stickers on his upper legs to complete the look, and I honestly have to admire the dedication

Yeah they're really cool and very different than what came before. For better or worse.

That part is up to you. With that amount of changes and the awesome packaging, I'm all over these.

I am right there with you on this. The retro packaging really sells these figures. I haven't collected any MISB in a while, but these definitely make me want to pick them up for that alone.

I dunno, the doctored retro artwork feels kind of disingenuous to me.

If these were G1 reissues, I'd be more interested, but as TR repaints? Less so. But the packaging feels like they're trying to get people to think they're the originals.

I think the concept of being educated and being able to educate is something that more people need more of in their lives.

No, we don't all know everything but we should spread and share that what we do know.

If I'm consistently misspelling a word, I would want and expect people to correct me as should I imagine all decent people who know the value of good literacy.

Its just arrogant laziness to know you're spelling a word incorrectly and not correct yourself or ignore the advice when people do tell you how to spell a word correctly.

They’re trying to pull on that nostalgia without incurring the expense of remaking those old molds.  Seems to be working well enough for Star Wars and GI Joe.

Personally, I’m a mark for that retro packaging, but the only one I’m really interested in is Hardhead (with cartoon mouth!).  But I suspect I’ll be getting Highbrow and probably Punch depending on availability.

Mark my words though: After how well Hasbro hit it with character remakes the past couple of years, it would not surprise me in the LEAST if a “Retro series” isn’t being actively explored, especially if COVID continues to impact development of feature films.  And sadly, there’s more than a few I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in solely for display, much less if the deco is improved/refined.

As much as I like how they were slotted into that line (not THAT they were, but how, with all of them being number 86 and then their own numbers), I wish the Studio Series 86 ones had gotten this packaging.

The packaging looks great, but I don't like the use of the old art because it implies in some cases that they come with more/ different accessories than they actually do. I had fooled myself into looking for a second smaller gun for Brainstorm, for instance.

I'm more excited for the supposed wave 2, but I live that this is happening. I wonder if Scorponok will get a second push because of it.

Honestly, I might not even be bothered as much if not for the other incongruent stuff between the art and the toy inside, like Chromedome's twin guns, or more egregiously, Hardhead's twin guns when he only has one (tank cannon excluded).

Guess it wouldn't be the first time, even with new art. *looks at Fortress Maximus*
