@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

@  Cyoti : (08 May 2021 - 11:14 AM)

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:58 AM)

Generations Nightbeat never really scratched that itch sadly; he looked okay, but his transformation was fiddly, his robot mode had far too many bits and pieces flopping around unsecured, and his chest dragged along the surface in var mode. =/

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:57 AM)

I second wishing that we got a Deluxe Nightbeat from TR, mostly because as a kid he was second-in-command to my old Powermaster Optimus for the longest time. =P

They didn't even make this on purpose. One of the designers just sat down to watch Top Gun and found it in his hands afterward.

Anyway, Top Gun might not have been high on anyone's "crossovers wanted" list (though I have a T-shirt that proves it isn't entirely unconsidered) but it's certainly a well-remembered property strongly associated with a specific vehicle. Nice to see that crossover toy logo really was a harbinger of things to come.

Is the foundation of your interest in Top Gun mostly because of the use of Maverick in Megaman X?
It's mostly because cool airplane, but I do have an odd urge to have him fight Energon Rodimus, yes.

Yes I know it's broken. It's an HTTPS thing and I haven't gotten around to dealing with it yet.

Anybody figure out what figure Maverick might be remolded from? The box art gives him a rather movie-ish look, but the only large recent movie jetformer I can think of is Starscream. :hmm

Studio Series Blitzwing is a possibility, but any part re-use might be pretty minimal. I think we'll have to wait to see a pic of the actual toy in robot mode.

Wait, they already revealed a Studio Series Blitzwing? :???

Anyways, random thought: a majority of iconic movie vehicles (as in vehicles that are virtually characters unto themselves unlike, say, the mass-produced TIE fighter) are associated with good guys, and so they'll most likely be designated as Autobots. Are there any similarly iconic 'bad guy' vehicles that could become classified as Decepticons?

tec already mentioned the evil Airwolf and KARR from Knight Rider, in Knight Rider there was also Goliath, the nigh-invincible Semi truck.
There's also the truck from 'Duel', the car from 'The Car', and Christine.
Seems like there ought to be more, but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

The Green Goblin truck from Maximum Overdrive springs to mind. I mean it's only a "classic" in an MSTKish way but there ya go.

Hmm... Something Mad Max-y, obviously any Empire vehicles from Star Wars or a Klingon or Romulan ship from Trek I think are iconic enough despite not being unique vehicles. Darth Vader's tie is unique.

-ZacWilliam, I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of...

It turns out evil vehicles largely don't actually have visible drivers, which is a problem for the robot-mode end of things. Although we do see a little of the guys driving these:
...but then, there are also three different good-guy ones they'd probably use instead.

The remake version of KARR could even transform, somewhat.

Even had Peter Cullen reprise his voice.

I think the concept of being educated and being able to educate is something that more people need more of in their lives.

No, we don't all know everything but we should spread and share that what we do know.

If I'm consistently misspelling a word, I would want and expect people to correct me as should I imagine all decent people who know the value of good literacy.

Its just arrogant laziness to know you're spelling a word incorrectly and not correct yourself or ignore the advice when people do tell you how to spell a word correctly.

It's nice to see Collaborative continue. Didn't expect it would be so long before the next one, but it makes sense to keep them special.

Intrigued mainly because of how the robot mode might go, and even then we get enough jetformers for it to be more curiosity than anything; not really a Top Gun guy (if anything, I'm a "Danger Zone" fan).

Not very surprised by the choice of Top Gun; it's certainly crossed people's minds before if fan art is any indication. Although by that logic we're also going to see an A-Team van, KITT/KARR, the Mystery Machine, and so on, when what I'd really be amused by is the Flintstonemobile or George Jetson's jalopy. Plus Top Gun does have a movie due out soon.

No idea how this would work, but I hope they eventually work their way over to the BTAS or Burton Batmobile...

Virtually every custom as good as the title suggests!

For those who havent seen it, go get some extra movie butter popcorn, crack up a cold soda, and prepare to enjoy the best 90 minutes of your life.  Just dont take the movie serious. take it at surface value.  Its a fun movie, its not designed to be torn apart and analyzied.  And the best volleyball scene ever to be put in a movie.  G1 Starscream even makes an apperance.

as for the toy....now I want one as Ice Man.  And Viper. Cause he's probably saying, "Holy shit, it's Maverick and Goose."

An F-14 from Hasbro, eh?
I think I will stick to admiring what Bandai can do for the VF-1.
Or better yet, fifth generation valkyries from Macross Frontier.

I never did like how things got more and more cacophonous as Macross went forward.

Next Macross and it'll be jets that turn into a swirling mass of cubes that reassemble into a giant robot with minimal visual connection to the airplane.

Don't worry, I've never seen it either.  I do hope they learned some lessons from the old MP Seeker mold, as some of the things I could tell just by looking (toothpick sized plastic struts, etc) made me avoid getting it, and later on my suppositions wound up being accurate.  A super thin bit of plastic WILL snap if it's the slightest bit off-round and inside a joint.
