*Scrubbed*
My initial reaction was one of callous indifference towards those who will be directly affected by the Coronavirus outbreak. It was crass, crude, and I sincerely do apologize for it.
It's just...
The media have been banging the "BE AFRAID! BE VERY, VERY AFRAID!" drum on pretty much everything since 2001 when I really became conscious of the mainstream media as a "thing". And it's now 2020 and I am so very, very tired of being told to be afraid of every damn thing. I've survived at least four predicted apocalypses at this point, to say nothing of half a dozen superbugs, and that's not even mentioning the scare of global thermonuclear confrontation that's coming back into fashion again.
I refuse to allow myself to be ruled by fear over something I cannot control. That way lies madness.

-The outbreak will be deadly to many thousands of vulnerable people
-Trump's stupidity and evil are making it worse
-The media naturally promotes panic and spectacle to make ad revenue, as has been true since the days of "killer bees" and "shark summer"
-The media particularly loathes Trump and portrays everything he does as the apocalypse, like the Soleimani strike

There's a whole range of responses between caution and panic, Rust. I'm advising something in the neighborhood of the former, not the latter. One is useful, the other helps absolutely nobody.
Find your comfortable range, but indifference shouldn't the one you choose.

Did I misunderstand what he said, or did Trump officially call this outbreak a hoax?

The infuriating thing is that when you point this out to his supporters, they try to translate his statement into "oh, he just means the liberal media coverage, not the virus itself!"
But that's not what he actually said, which is what's important. Our president doesn't know how to articulate a complex thought into coherent speech.

once again, it's Mexicos' fault.
The Trump administration is considering imposing entry restrictions at the U.S.-Mexico border to control the spread of the coronavirus in the United States, according to two U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.Mexico’s government said on Friday it had detected three cases of coronavirus infection in three men who had all recently traveled to Italy, making the country the second in Latin America to register the fast-spreading virus. https://www.reuters....t-idUSL1N2AT07P

He didn't say the coronavirus was a hoax, he said the Democrats politicizing it to attack him was (in his usual... eloquence...?) a hoax and likened that effort to Mueller, impeachment, etc. There's a sliver of truth to it and of course Democrats will weaponize whatever they can especially in an election year. That's politics.

This was buried in the third paragraph of the article you linked so you might have missed it:
The concern over containing the virus at the southern U.S. border comes as the Trump administration also weighs possible restrictions on the entry of travelers from South Korea, Italy and Japan.
It's like they're weighing entry restrictions from countries that have outbreaks on a case by case basis.

GOP cut funding to CDC to distribute tax $ to billionaires and for a USELESS border wall.
The failure to protect Americans is ENTIRELY due to the incompetence, corruption, and greed of the GOP.

A video popped up in my recommendations today from Linus Tech Tips about how anyone thinking of buying new tech stuff should pull the trigger right now because, even in a best-case scenario, the huge drop in supply from all the Chinese workers (including those responsible for shipping components from other Asian countries) staying home is going to have a long-term effect on prices the same way the flood in Thailand kept hard drive prices high for years.
He also informed me that YouTube has been demonetizing videos that mention coronavirus, which is... troubling, but I'm hesitant to say they're doing it for bad reasons because I can't think of what any bad reasons could possibly be. More likely they're trying to discourage people from trying to cash in on a current hot topic by spreading misinformation.

YouTube's been demonetizing videos for ending with the letter "Y". Even if it is my principle entertainment platform (I pay for Premium membership), even I find YouTube's demonetization policy utterly baffling. How exactly do they expect to run a successful business model if 90% of their creators get demonetized for a 15 second song blurb in the background?

YouTube has operated at a loss since literally day one. At this point the most baffling thing about it is that Google hasn't shut it down completely by now.
