Or do Japan's cultural values vary depending on exactly who you're trying to shut down?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:33 PM)

Could it be that, perhaps, these different cultural values might lead to a different approach seeming appropriate?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:32 PM)

Hm. Back when we were arguing about the Legends comic, I seem to recall being repeatedly told that Japan had different cultural values than the US (and therefore anyone who had a problem with anything at all was wrong to voice that opinion ever).

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:23 AM)

Plus, as much as I hate to admit it, every single anime character is built to suit the audience's tastes so they buy more merch/do other things that allow $$$ to flow in the production committees direction, so the authenticity is certainly not for representation's sake.

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:18 AM)

Both those anime air at midnight and are aimed at a very specific audience in a whole other media landscape. Major projects have press releases about almost everything, and there are groups just waiting to pat anybody on the back for doing what they want (GLAAD, HRC, etc)

@  B-Fox : (19 February 2020 - 03:16 AM)

It's funny that a friggin' anime about zombie idols and an anime about a school of anthropomorphic animals can have really positive trans characters WITHOUT a press release about their inclusion in the series prior to the episodes airing or having the creators announcing it on social media and patting themselves on the back for doing a thing.

@  CORVUS : (18 February 2020 - 04:33 PM)

Hook up your sprinkler system to a canister of healthy organic carrot-juice. The kids won't be able to get off your lawn fast enough.

Had someone in the discord recommend I put this here.

I did a short video on my thoughts concerning the new BotCon. I'd really like some feedback and thoughts from people here; whether they are FOR it or AGAINST it.

This is a pretty decent recap of what went down last week! You raise a couple of questions at the end which echo ones that have cropped up in this thread and elsewhere, and I thought I'd take a second to compile some answers. They're available in a Google Doc here, for anyone who's interested. Here's an extract that addresses your biggest question:

If the involvement of Pete Sinclair is such a no-sell, why didn't people boycott the convention back when it was running?

Times change. Not everything that is known now was widely known in 2016. At the time, many had resigned themselves to Pete’s management, seeing it as an unfortunate reality. The circumstances are different now, and all across the world, people are finding their voices. It’s important to remember that even at the time, many high-profile freelancers (and fans) did in fact publicly disassociate themselves from Fun Publications as a direct result of Pete’s behaviour.

Yeah this still stands for me as "Its not official, thus Botcon in name only"
I was never able to attend previous botcons but always wanted to. But seeing this is no different from a TFCon, I have a hard time getting so invested in the goings on with behind-the-scenes douchebaggery.

Once I'm aware that Hasbro is going to sanction this then I'll be vocal about unsavory individuals being able to monetarily gain from it. Til then, its just another fan con with a Loaded name attached.

It's been said before, but this "if it's not official, it's BotCon in name only" attitude confuses the heck out of me.

There were more than a half-dozen BotCons before it ever was official. This is, in at least some respects, a return to BotCon's roots. More authentically "BotCon" than ever, IMHO.   (Don't get me wrong, I love me some official-ness. But that's just a part of it.)

Also, to repeat what I said in another context, I see no reason BotCon, TFCon, and anyone else can't coexist. No one is suggesting that anyone should go to ALL of them (especially if the involvement of anyone connected gives you reason not to), but having more conventions, each in a different location, means more opportunities for fans everywhere who want to go to at least one.

Theoretically you could practically go to a different furry con every weekend, and if furry can do that, there's no reason Transformers can't have multiple cons across multiple months in multiple locations the same way.

To continue the analogy, Anthrocon(probably the closest thing to Botcon in terms of name recognition) within the last couple years was outgrown by MFF from what I recall hearing, and they started much later.  Sure Botcon has a name, but that doesn't mean TFCon can't outdo it if they want, or some other new Transformers con can start up next year and be even bigger within 10 years. It's good to have options, and if Botcon dies a third time, there'll still be plenty more to go to!

I actually hope there isn't an official one anytime soon, as more unofficial ones means more variety, and an official one would just encourage people to ignore the others in favor of THE one.

Well, mostly.

BotCon 2002 was official pre-Fun Pub.

BotCon had official Hasbro participation and exclusives as of 1994. What it means to be "official" has changed over the years.

You're muddying the waters... we've been through all this.

But, yes, now that there has been such a thing as being fully-official (which, again, started in 2002), it's entirely possible that an unofficial BotCon today can no longer have the kinds of officially-produced Hasbro exclusives that it once could.

On the other hand, shows like SDCC are not (and will never be) official Transformers conventions, even though Hasbro does continue to have a presence and to provide official merchandise. Can such a thing be true for an unofficial convention explicitly devoted to a Hasbro concept (such as Transformers)?

Only time will tell.

And yet people are still confused about the whole experience. As someone who was there I think the idea that Hasbro was showing up and giving presentations and answering questions matters.

Right. Hasbro doesn't have a good relationship with, say, TFCon. But as recently as last year TFNation had some indirect Hasbro participation in the form of Boulder Media (Hasbro subsidiary). So a BotCon that builds a relationship with Hasbro seems feasible. Especially given the history.

You can't retcon Botcon having been official. Hasbro was there, they provided exclusives, they formally let their trademarks be used everywhere. I can't even tell you what "being official" in 2002 supposedly changed, but I can pretty much guarantee you it wasn't anything anyone would notice.

There were years BotCon carried exclusives produced by Hasbro.

There were years BotCon produced these exclusives and was also licensed as the Official Show.

There was one year where BotCon had a custom exclusive and was not sponsored by Hasbro.

What the future holds is still to be announced, but the BotCon Convention was and will soon again be back, as BotCon. Officially the Official BotCon Convention with plenty of surprises I am sure. Currently, BotCon is also an official brand with some great things planned.

Hope this clear things up... officially.
