Depends on what his tastes range.
An action-y, survival game set on an alien planet Subnautica is a lot of fun.
Dragonball Xenoverse games are solid fighting games that are age appropriate.
FTL: Faster Than Light is a fun "rogue-like" scifi game where you control a ship and have to race through a randomized galaxy. Hard though.
Kerbal Space Program is fun and educational, developing critical thinking skills and teaching basic engineering concepts to try and launch successful space flights. Can be frustratingly difficult, though.
Sid Meier's Civilization VI remains a benchmark for Strategy titles
There's also the Total War games for a more interactive strategy side. A bit more mature granted, but pretty much all the games involve optional "Blood" DLC (In order to be sold in regions in which blood and gore are frowned upon in video games).

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and its sequels are some of my favorite racing games. Forza Horizon 3 & 4 as well, but I'm not sure if those are Steam.
SEGA Genesis Classics is a good retro collection that can often be had for cheap. Sonic Mania, Sonic CD, Freedom Planet, and Mega Man 11 are good platformers.

And yes, I was too lazy to come up with a decent TF related forum name, and just *GASP* used my own.

A Hat in Time is good all-ages fun. Odyssey - The Invention of Science might be a good introduction to Myst-like games. Grow Up and Grow Home might be good, depending on his platforming skill level. And of course I would be remiss if I didn't suggest Blaster Master Zero. I enjoyed the heck out of the original at his age. I wouldn't suggest the game after that for a while though, Zero 2 definitely ramps up the difficulty.
