Astrotrain has a mode that's not a train.
No one argues otherwise, but if that was all that mattered, there'd be little to no effort to keep making him a triple-changer where one mode resembles a train.
Given Astrotrain being made at all, which is possible because he can be something other than a train, the next most important thing is making him exactly like G1. That means a train mode, which he can support because of his non-train mode. If he were only a train, he wouldn't be getting remade at all, and faithfulness to G1 would be irrelevant.
If we had any US G1 train-only guys, we'd have a test case for this, but we don't, because Hasbro didn't want to try to sell Just A Train then, either.
Also, "train" is in his damn name.
Well, yes, but Hasbro gave him that name. And made the decision to bring that toy over from Diaclone in the first place.
I certainly don't dispute that having non-train modes helped, but I don't think "train" equals "avoid! Stay away!" the way some folks are making it sound.
Committing to six trains? All at about the same time? Yeah, that I can see being a bit harder sell....
(pulling out my GoBots "Loco" next chance I have....)
