THE WICKED + THE DIVINE writer KIERON GILLEN teams up with artist supernova STEPHANIE HANS (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 1831, Journey Into Mystery) for her first ongoing comic! DIE is a pitch-black fantasy where a group of forty-something adults have to deal with the returning unearthly horror they barely survived as teenage role-players. If Kieron's in a rush, he describes it as "Goth Jumanji." That only captures a sliver of what you'll find in oversized debut issuewhere fantasy gets all too real.
(He also describes it as "the logical collision between the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon and Stephen Kings It".)
There is an actual RPG to accompany the book, which is expected to be released alongside the first trade (so hopefully early June). The default die is a d6; there are also four-, eight-, ten-, twelve- and twenty-sided dice in the game but each of them belongs solely to a specific character class - only one player can use each of them. If I'm playing the Neo, I'm the only one who can touch the d10. The Fool doesn't have their own die, but can apparently make modifications to their d6.
We do a lot about the fetishism of RPGs, which I cant think of many games that have done. Were interested in dice and maps and other bits of detritus, Gillen says later. The icons of D&D, in those early days, were those weird set of six dice, and were making that the heart of the game.
Polygon playtested, so this will give you an idea of what the game has in store: https://www.polygon....pg-image-comics
The relationship between the comic and the game will be, I think, fascinating - as is the back matter in the individual issues where Gillen discusses a lot of cool stuff about RPGs. When the book was announced, I thought... Gillen is good and this sounds intriguing. But now I'm like... he is building something much more interesting than Just A Comic Book here. It's exciting. Or maybe it's pretentious wank, I'm not sure. But, as dumb as this sounds, I feel like this has the potential to be Something Special.
