Why do you feel a need to label yourself for doing something harmless?

@  Telly : (13 September 2019 - 11:10 AM)

thats more than i look at on reddit

@  Benbot : (13 September 2019 - 10:49 AM)

am I a basic bitch for only browsing the front page of Reddit?

@  Shrug : (12 September 2019 - 12:26 PM)

I managed to find about 2/3s of my goal Sega Genesis collection before the last price bump

@  Anonymous X : (12 September 2019 - 11:11 AM)

So relieved that I picked up most of my NTSC GameCube collection in 2010/11 before prices on the secondary market went bezerk...

@  unluckiness : (12 September 2019 - 12:54 AM)

I have fond memories of it since it was the last console Mario Kart that didn't have the ridiculous pre-race cart assembly

@  TM2-Megatron : (11 September 2019 - 10:26 PM)

Like many Gamecube games, underrated

@  unluckiness : (11 September 2019 - 09:24 AM)

Double Dash is great. Just watch out for blue shells

@  Bass X0 : (11 September 2019 - 07:43 AM)

I used a double dash on my mobile. The chat didn’t like it.

@  TheMightyMol... : (11 September 2019 - 04:17 AM)

The mobile version of the site chokes on certain characters, I think.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (11 September 2019 - 04:10 AM)

what's with that punctuation anyway

@  Nevermore : (11 September 2019 - 03:20 AM)

Now where did that come from, Bass X0?

@  Bass X0 : (11 September 2019 - 01:52 AM)

Politics and Religion — tools of foul play!

@  TM2-Megatron : (10 September 2019 - 11:10 PM)

If you owe, you're expected to actually pay it at the time you file, before they even process your return

@  TM2-Megatron : (10 September 2019 - 11:10 PM)

If you file electronically, I find you usually get your refund within a couple weeks

@  Nevermore : (10 September 2019 - 06:22 PM)

Well, lucky it took less than two months for me. For a little over 200 Euros.

@  wonko the sane? : (10 September 2019 - 06:11 PM)

Pretty much, yeah. Canada revenue will be all up your ass if you earn less than 200K and owe tax, but your refund is basically "duke nukem forever".

@  Nevermore : (10 September 2019 - 05:34 PM)

Whereas if you overpaid and they have to refund you, they will take their sweet time to let you know.

@  Nevermore : (10 September 2019 - 05:34 PM)

Like, here in Germany, if the tax authority responds to your tax report quickly, you can rest assured they want more money.

@  Nevermore : (10 September 2019 - 05:33 PM)

Do tax authorities in other countries base their time to respond to filed tax reports on whether they owe or are owed as well?

@  wonko the sane? : (10 September 2019 - 11:13 AM)

Check what the requirements are for your cad program, and try to beat them by about 20%, and understand that software requirements have been stable for a few years: not really keeping up with the advancements in hardware. Unless you're doing something SPECIFIC which requires ludicrous amounts of power, just give your self a cushion on hardware and don't bother going whole hog.

@  Benbot : (10 September 2019 - 10:16 AM)

What I'm currently using is an i5 2018 Surface Laptop. My current desktop is all but dead. I think in the end affordability will win out over specs. I need to use CAD programs, but I'm a student, not a professional.

@  wonko the sane? : (10 September 2019 - 10:06 AM)

Okay. Whats the specs on the I7 and what are you currently using?

@  Benbot : (10 September 2019 - 09:23 AM)

Alright. The damages now seem to include my primary SSD. Thankfully, the gaming drive (I have now lost all my games and mods entirely.) Let me wipe it and install there. Once the crucial utility is installed again, will verify the drive.

@  wonko the sane? : (07 September 2019 - 03:32 PM)

Three more crashes since I pulled the ram. Verifying the OS now... tonight might be a reinstalling kinda night.

@  wonko the sane? : (07 September 2019 - 11:46 AM)

And thankfully it wasn't totally dead, so it was working on occassion. If the problem is actually solved, I just need to wait and see if the program/system crashes are over.

@  wonko the sane? : (07 September 2019 - 11:45 AM)

Got it. I wound up running the memtest four more times, because of course it's always the last dimm. But I got the culprit. I lost 8 gig, but I'm still at three times the "recommended" amount.

@  Hg Dragon : (07 September 2019 - 11:09 AM)

DL and run MemTest86. It'll help weed out issues. Run 1 stick at a time. Then run a stick that passed in each slot. Will help you find out if it's the RAM or the slot/motherboard

@  Patch : (07 September 2019 - 10:45 AM)

How many RAM sticks do you have total?

@  wonko the sane? : (07 September 2019 - 09:57 AM)

Great, two weeks of random BSODs, and I manage to finally work out some ram has gone bad. Just need to work out which one(s) and then I can go from there.

@  unluckiness : (07 September 2019 - 01:11 AM)

Are they still suing Italian restaurants for having food that's insufficiently French?

@  TM2-Megatron : (06 September 2019 - 08:51 PM)

Quebec's a special case; they just have an insatiable lust for hate

@  Ashley : (06 September 2019 - 07:48 PM)

Those weird language laws are basically anti-everyone. Who does it help to stop certain toys from being sold there?

thats right! i booked my trip just a few minutes ago! on september 4th, lil ol telly is heading for fun in the sun on the beaches of waikiki! i NEVER thought id be able to do something like this! i always thought itd be too expensive, but its actually fairly cheap ($1500 round trip and for the hotel)

i started planning this last year. i realized i was spending all my money on THINGS, and always sitting around the house when on vacation. i didnt have any fun experiences or adventures to look back on. well i decided to put an end to that! ive got a fairly good paying job, a good credit card limit (which i used to pay for the trip) and im 44 years old. i figured it was time to do SOMETHING. im finally going to take a REAL vacation!

i cant wait and im so excited!!!!!

Congrats! Here are some things you must try:

1. Leonard's Bakery (malasadas)

2. Rainbow Drive-In (plate lunch)

3. Marukame Udon (chicken tempura)

4. Eggs 'n Things (loco moco)

There are probably things to do there besides eat, too, I never checked.

That bit you said about spending on things instead of experiences? Totally true. I thought I was being practical by wanting tangible things but more often than not, it's the experiences that you treasure more.

Awesome! One thing I've learned about traveling-be very very careful with impulse buys and tourist traps. Be sure to stretch your legs during the flight. Get to the airport at least 3hrs early. Carry photocopies of your passport just in case. Don't carry all your cash on one spot. Study up on local customs. Don't try to cram your schedule too much, leave some time to get lost and chill.

I'll second Marukami Udon - although, depending on the time of day, you may have to wait in queue.

Hanauma Bay is great for snorkelling, and if you get there right when it opens, it's free entry (and not nearly as crowded as later on in the day).  "Toilet Bowl" is the section of the bay on the far-left side of the beach that doesn't get as much traffic, and despite the name, it's a nice spot to start out in.

Definitely spend some time driving around the East side of the island, even it's just to circle back to the airport to drop off the rental.  There are some really nice scenic views - it's where they filmed Jurassic Park, after all.

im not really planning on doing anything in advance (like pre-buying tickets). at least not yet anyway. i may add some things as time gets closer.  im just gonna wander around to see what catches my interest. i wont be renting a car, but i will be renting a scooter. i love riding those things. might spend a day just scooting around and taking pics. ill go snorkeling at least once though. cant go to hawaii and not do that lol i MIGHT trying parasailing. will have to see how brave i am when im there lol but bungee jumping is RIGHT OUT! i get nervous just watching other people do it. i HAVE to spend time at the beach. ive never even seen an ocean, let alone been in one. when im on the beach with a nice drink just lounging around im gonna send my boss a selfie lol

one thing im really looking forward to, is seeing my first hawaiian sunset. i dont know why im looking forward to it so much, but there we are. the hotel im staying at (the ilima hotel) has a terrace on the roof, so im just gonna get a drink or 2, find a comfy chair and watch the sun go down :) i did read some reviews of the hotel and some people complained about the pool being small. the hug you need a pool when the hugging OCEAN is TWO BLOCKS AWAY? lol

for those that have been there, any tips on what i should take with me? i dont have much at the moment. ive got a pair of sandals, some puzzle books for the plane and a waterproof fanny pack for when im swimming. gotta make sure nothing gets stolen! i figure id buy sunscreen when im there, as im sure theyll have the appropriate kind to use (something about it being coral safe).

oh yeah. my little skeleton is going with me, and i bought him a nice little rocking chair so he can sit on the balcony with me lol

We had an excellent time there.

We stayed in the Hilton Waikiki right on the water which was lovely. It was also easily within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants. Definitely touristy, but not bad. It reminded me of Miami-meets-Vegas. We did have a rental which was good to have - though I guess a scooter will get you where you need to go, it might just take a bit. Bonus, parking will be much easier for you; I paid more to park our rental at the hotel than I paid for the rental itself. Free street parking is available, but VERY hard to find.

We went to the Kapi'olani Regional Park, which is the dormant volcano on the southern tip of the island. It was an old army base and you can hike up to the ridge and walk through parts of the command tower and stuff. Obviously fantastic views. We also did a short hike up to Manoa Falls which was pretty. The falls themselves weren't anything dramatic, but it was just a pleasant excursion. Passed on Pearl Harbor because a good chunk of it is closed right now (including the memorial itself).

We took one day to go up to the North Shore, where we went to CLIMB Works Keana Farms Zipline tour. HIGHLY recommended because it gets you a brief history lesson of Hawaii in addition to some incredible views of that end of the island. Eight ziplines over all one of which is a half-mile long! There are a bunch of permanent food trucks right there by CLIMB Works, but they all close around 4pm. However if you follow 83 up around the northern tip of the island, there were a bunch of other options still open later in the day. That made a great place to watch the sun set over the Pacific.

As for food, we ate at MAC 24/7 which was a diner-type place in a hotel (good, if not overly exciting). Shorefyre in the International Marketplace was also good. Other meals were at various food trucks or some of the smaller shops around our hotel.

I would've liked to do more hiking, but my wife isn't as big a fan. That being said, she was obviously quite happy with the beach time, so it was a great trip over all.

If you need glasses to see, get some tethers for them so you don't have to worry about a wave knocking them off in the ocean, hat, sun glasses and beach towel. Some kind of opaque drink container to take alcohol to the beach in. Depending on what and how you pack, you may be better of buying some or all of this stuff there, as paying for an extra checked bag is expensive.

Try a Loco moco. It's a delicious food pile. We went to a lu ow or however its spelled. It was pretty great, open bar, dancing, food, music.

We did lots of hiking, it's beautiful, fun and costs little to nothing depending on where you go.

the hotel ill be at has free parking, but its first come first serve. and like i said, i just love riding a scooter! and i dont mind it taking longer to get places on one. im not gonna be in ANY rush getting anywhere. my life is already governed by a clock due to work, so itll be nice not having to worry about having to be somewhere at a certain time (except for my ride home of course!)

i read about the volcano/army base. it sounds interesting

id like to go to the pearl harbor memorial, if only to take pics for my dad since he was in the navy. i did see it was closed, but hopefully itll be open when im there

ill have to try the zipline. probly the closest ill come to feeling like batman lol im confused though. does the zipline place close at 4, or just the food trucks?

i do wear glasses, and thats one of the reasons for the waterproof pouch. i dont plan to actually wear them while im in the water, but i dont want someone to make off with them. god thatd suck! i CAN see without them a bit, but if i lost them id miss all the sites. maybe i should look into getting another pair just in case...

ive got clip on sunglasses, so im good there. a lot of stuff i plan to buy when i get there so theyll say "hawaii" or whatever on them lol

Throw stuff into lava at every possible opportunity.

i mean, i do plan to visit a volcano. dont know about getting close enough to toss stuff in though lol

Bring empty room in your suitcase for souvenirs.

was already planning on it. im thinking of putting up a jar at work for people to put money in for souvenirs, then take all that and buy them all whatever i can lol

thanks for all the good advice :) if anyone comes up with more things go ahead and do so. ill be keeping an eye on and updating this thread every now and again. when i actually get there, be on the look out for the "holy crap im actually IN hawaii" thread lol

Oahu doesn't have active volcanoes, they've all moved on to the big island.

If you do the zipline at CLIMB Works, you have to reserve a time as they send you out in groups. It's a good couple of hours to do the whole thing. The restaurants nearby close at four, so if you have a slot in the afternoon, everything will be shutting down by the time you're finished. But again, plenty more options further up the road around the northern tip of the island.

Ah, there's also one point where you have to pull yourself up to another platform with the help of a rope and pulleys. I assume your guides would help you too, but just so you're aware. Still, if you meet the restrictions, it's definitely worth it!
