The biggest flaw to FF8 is that its at odds with itself. Characters purposefully have AWFUL stats (especially as you level up vs your enemies), thus inciting players to experiment with junctions to make up for their characters' natural deficiencies. But there's never any real reason to do so, since the game also gives the player giant penalty-free nukes to just get through fights (and when a player realizes leveling up is pointless, assuming they even have fights in the first place). Junctioning is an interesting idea, a more extreme take on how FF7's Materia system played with character stats... but with the most bungled execution possible.

I'm not saying the system was great. It was a flawed experiment at best. But if you knew what you were doing, at least, then time could be minimized doing all that grindy stuff. And yes, it was definitely at odds with itself. Trying not to use your strongest magic as much as possible is pretty non-intuitive, and largely means that you just never cast Magic for a good chunk of the game.
First thing to take note of is that the basic elemental spells were pretty inefficient for Junction stats no matter their level, so constantly refining them up to the next tier was rather a large waste of time. Most effective thing to do early game was to refine Water spells from all the Fish Fins you loot fighting Fastitocalons on Balamb Beach (since they're the best AP source at the beginning of the game). And then max your Demi stock when you fight Diablos (that can be a slight pain, mind you, if you fight him as soon as possible, since you've not yet levelled Siren for the third Spirit Junction, so one character will be drawing sub-optimally and potentially failing the Draws), and you're pretty much set from there. Stronger, junction-worthy spells can more often be obtained via card and item refinement rather than tiering the spells up, most of the time.

I dont like Dragonquest there I said it I have tried twice with the series and was unhappy with ether games (8 and one other)
Some of it stems from the art style while I like some of the character designs of AT most of them are a pass
So that means that out of all the DLC for SBU so far that I like is Petey and Banjo and that sucks

Now don't get me wrong. I wish someone would come along snd mod out the entire damn dam level. And since I've never made it past that point, I can't speak to the rest of the game. I usually just play up to the damn dam level and turn it off.
But back in the day, getting past the first few levels of a game was never guaranteed. Nintendo Hard was not unique to this game. The question was do you enjoy the parts you were able to play? And yes, I do enjoy playing it. So much so that even though I have it on the Wii virtual console, I went and bought a physical copy off eBay.
If only someone could mod out the damn dam level.

The NES TMNT game has a lot of big ideas that bungles the execution a tad. Did you know that the turtles all deal different damage to different enemies? Did you know that it's almost a moot point entirely since Donatello does the most damage in almost all instances in addition to having his massive reach? It's true!
