Is it safe to leave small batteries installed forever?

Meanwhile, my Botcon Cyclonus still lights up just fine after 16 years.
So I know those little round pacemaker batteries are safe in the long term. How long is long term? Can I just leave them there and forget it? Same with Unicron's head and hand?
I put the C-cells into Platinum Trypticon just as a matter of principle but I sure know better than to leave THOSE in too long!

I always remove batteries from battery-compatible toys as a matter of principle. For me, it's fun to check out the light-up/sound/whatever feature when I first open the toy, but when I am ready to leave it displayed on the shelf, the batteries come out.

Yeah, not long ago, I got some of my G2 Laser Rods out and the only one I had that still had the battery was ELECTRO. I figured that I had better take it out, but the damnedest thing happened when I went to take the battery out...

Funny enough, I just de-batteried a ton of figures, and G2 Road Rocket still lit up on the original batteries. That's 23 years, for the record. I popped it open and they were leaking, but still worked. Damnedest thing.

Yeah, I've had variable experiences with batteries. Basically, you're always at risk, no matter the age or charge. If a toy is on my desk or on short term display, I'll leave the batteries in, but beyond that, I'll pull them and bag them, or just dump them.
