@  -LittleAutob... : (30 June 2020 - 05:55 PM)

x-x when in vehicle mode we can travel much F A R T H E R-

@  wonko the sane? : (30 June 2020 - 05:52 PM)

Because despite the fact that we can travel around the world in the time it takes to get a good nights sleep and a couple of meals: people rarely wander more than 25 miles away from home for the duration of their lives.

@  Otaku : (30 June 2020 - 05:49 PM)

I don't know how many days that trip takes - especially while sightseeing - but explaining they're 3936 kilometers (2445 miles) apart gives an idea, paradoxically because it is too large to easily picture.

@  Otaku : (30 June 2020 - 05:44 PM)

Aye.  When I catch lay people discussing miles and not how long the trip takes, it is in an attempt to stress how far away something is... like NYC to LA.

@  ▲ndrusi : (30 June 2020 - 01:20 PM)

But I can imagine 45 *minutes* easily.

@  ▲ndrusi : (30 June 2020 - 01:20 PM)

I can imagine a mile, it's a distance I've run. I can't really imagine 45 miles.

@  ▲ndrusi : (30 June 2020 - 01:19 PM)

I think there's also an element of the thing where things that are much bigger than us all blur together.

@  Otaku : (30 June 2020 - 11:49 AM)

If you're not, then you're more concerned with how long it takes.  Actual distance doesn't tell you that very well.  Besides traffic and road conditions, you'll need to know what kind of driving (city/interstate/rural/etc.).

@  Otaku : (30 June 2020 - 11:47 AM)

Distance matters if you're being paid by the mile.

@  TM2-Megatron : (30 June 2020 - 11:44 AM)

Canadians are the same way, for the most part. If you're driving somewhere far, especially, it helps you plan out the day more than a distance in KM would.

@  Otaku : (30 June 2020 - 11:42 AM)

We use the time it takes to get someplace because that is what is relevant to us.

@  TheMightyMol... : (30 June 2020 - 10:55 AM)

Because even we can't figure out miles half the time.

@  Paladin : (30 June 2020 - 09:54 AM)

it's a big country with a lot of empty space. between our citizens' ears.

@  Bass X0 : (30 June 2020 - 09:52 AM)

Why do most Americans measure distance by hours of driving?

@  TM2-Megatron : (29 June 2020 - 07:26 PM)

And as a result the world's lone blu-ray release of the film, an Australian disc that came out 7 years ago, now goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay. Thanks Disney.

@  TM2-Megatron : (29 June 2020 - 06:21 PM)

Well, they censored Daryl Hannah's butt in Splash :rolleyes

@  Paladin : (29 June 2020 - 05:43 PM)

maybe New Mutants is too bad even for D+.

@  Steevy Maximus : (29 June 2020 - 05:00 PM)

X-Men films are coming to Disney+ next month. But will they censor Hugh Jackman's butt?

@  -LittleAutob... : (29 June 2020 - 12:44 PM)

I mean, Pocket's license is specifically tied to the film/TV franchise. They have to account for the new series, even if it doesn't have to account for them, which means they'll inevitably need to either course-correct or retcon. For that matter, that's been why they've been dragging their feet getting to Hobus, to see what the official canon has to say about that event.

The license has specifically forbidden them from getting as far as the events of Hobus. They haven't been waiting for the official canon. They flat-out couldn't go there.

And, no, they don't HAVE to account fro the new series. They'd just drop the outdated canon and start up with the new. No need to reference stuff that's been invalidated at all.

In fact, they've done it before.

New teaser trailer dropped! It is pretty good! Not much content in it other than he was an Admiral when he retired.

Leaving aside the novel discontinuity entirely (and, again, I never expected them to retain it), I have trouble believing Picard would ever have accepted a promotion to Admiral.

That said, i'm intrigued to see where this goes.

That's what I mean; they can't just ignore the new series and keep doing the old (as they could with the Abramsverse because it's explicitly a different continuity). One way or another, the books being published next year will include the Picard series as part of the canon.

The only question is if the Picard series will explicitly rule out anything from the novels. Because if it doesn't, I guarantee the TrekLit writers and editors will find ways to make it fit.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but that little teaser trailer doesn't give me high hopes the writers and producers know what they're doing.  Picard isn't supposed to be a tragic character, but they keep trying to turn him into one.  I don't want to see another situation like Luke Skywalker where they turn our bold, optimistic hero into a bitter, sad old man just living his last days alone in isolation.  That just isn't Jean-Luc Picard.

I dunno, you can do most anything with a character... Picard could be an interesting conflicted character under the right circumstances.

'WHAT TERRIBLE THING MADE YOU RETIRE FROM THE GROUP YOU ONCE LOVED?!?' is not those circumstances.  It's a tired, tired, tired cliche and really just emphasizes that all their budget went to Patrick Stewart and they had none left over for good writers.

I thought Patrick Stewart hadn’t aged since the 80s, but you can tell in that teaser that he started up again at some point.

The teaser looks kind of promising, I get the feeling they'll do what Arrow was doing, having two stories running at the same time, one story be set in the present day for Picard while the other will show flash backs to the rescure that is mentioned in the trailer and the battle it hints at.

You have to remember, that Kirk told him not be an admiral in 2371, when he had been a captain for decades! His first ship, he was captain of for 22 years, and then he got to be the captain of the Enterprise for decades. He is the perfect person to be an admiral, and he probably was ready to be one at that point. Kirk didn't enjoy being an admiral because of who he was. He wanted to be in control, at the helm of his ship, battling aliens, discovering new worlds, and banging their women. That was Kirk. Picard was an entirely different person.

True and when you think about the context, fans had watched Kirk for over 25 years by that point. Picard? 7.

In universe Picard was far more experienced than Kirk. In the real world, Picard was the newbie. It was written for us; Picard probably noted the comment and moved on.

Maybe I'm too tied to the characterization of Picard in the novels. Picard in the novels had no interest in becoming admiral, quite explicitly.

He's an explorer at heart. Being tied to a desk would have been anathema to him.

He doesn't have to resemble Kirk to share Kirk's antipathy to becoming admiral.

I don't see why anyone who ever aspired to be a starship captain would want to become an admiral.  That doesn't seem like any kind of upgrade.

(Well, I can see why Janeway might be done with captaining, but in normal circumstances, no.)

Oh, I agree. Mostly just trying to push back against this idea that Picard (not being Kirk) would have just ignored him.

As an admiral, he would still have a ship. Ross had one, Riker had one, and he could have one and be in charge of exploration. Just because he is an admiral doesn't mean that he has to stay at a desk on a star base or Earth.
