Blugh, the english dub of BGC is atrocious.

I might need to update my software, or they face regional limitations, cause I found no evidence of either.

DUDE! Starcom and COPS are on Tubi too!

Spiffy! The english dub of Bubblegum Crisis on Tubi. It's gotten so hard to find these oldies on modern streaming services.

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:34 PM)

Or do Japan's cultural values vary depending on exactly who you're trying to shut down?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:33 PM)

Could it be that, perhaps, these different cultural values might lead to a different approach seeming appropriate?

@  ▲ndrusi : (19 February 2020 - 02:32 PM)

Hm. Back when we were arguing about the Legends comic, I seem to recall being repeatedly told that Japan had different cultural values than the US (and therefore anyone who had a problem with anything at all was wrong to voice that opinion ever).

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:23 AM)

Plus, as much as I hate to admit it, every single anime character is built to suit the audience's tastes so they buy more merch/do other things that allow $$$ to flow in the production committees direction, so the authenticity is certainly not for representation's sake.

@  fourteenwings : (19 February 2020 - 07:18 AM)

Both those anime air at midnight and are aimed at a very specific audience in a whole other media landscape. Major projects have press releases about almost everything, and there are groups just waiting to pat anybody on the back for doing what they want (GLAAD, HRC, etc)

@  B-Fox : (19 February 2020 - 03:16 AM)

It's funny that a friggin' anime about zombie idols and an anime about a school of anthropomorphic animals can have really positive trans characters WITHOUT a press release about their inclusion in the series prior to the episodes airing or having the creators announcing it on social media and patting themselves on the back for doing a thing.

Hook up your sprinkler system to a canister of healthy organic carrot-juice. The kids won't be able to get off your lawn fast enough.

This is the first episode I feel suffers from being a part of an incomplete story. Especially after all the hype devoted to Maddox. I mean we spent like the past five episodes talking about him. And I'd rather Seven had stuck with the crew, especially since, you know, they are heading to a Borg cube. Seems weird to introduce Seven and have her peace out right when that is revealed.

I did appreciate learning more about Rafi's past and her reason for even going along with this but I dont know how well it fit in to this episode's structure. Or maybe I just wanted more Seven of Nine. I don't know. Mixed feelings here, but obviously still enjoying what they are up to, I just hope the story seeds they've planted don't get away from them.

I expect we'll at least see more Maddox in flashbacks, and I definitely expect to see Seven again later.

I feel a lot of Voyager fans were extremely miffed after only 5 minutes into the episode.

Next episode: Neelix is gunned down in a flashback.

Episode after: Quark and his entire family blow themselves up in Quarks bar as Nausicaan's attack in flashback.

Episode after that: Wesley Crusher seals himself in the USS Titans engineering section to save people from a coolant leak and is disintegrated in flashback.

Kurtzman at a convention: "SEE WHAT I DID?!?!"

The convention host enters the hall "There's no one here Mr Kurtzman, they gave me a note saying you're a dick."

Swap Quark for Barclay and I'd be pretty good with that.

Yeah, I didn't like the obvious plot twist at the end of the episode. And Seven was awesome in this show, as was the whole french pirate Picard. Other than that, I was not impressed with the story.

Something that comes to mind: If Maddox's lab was torched and he was on the run himself after Dahj went boom, then who was controlling the "Mom" holocall that Soji made?  Did he leave behind some sort of control program hosted elsewhere?  The way he was talking it sounded like he wouldn't have had much in the way of remote hosting going on for his equipment etc.

Then again I suppose that gives more fuel to the idea those calls weren't actually calls but an internal chat/hallucination, particularly since both sisters were alone when they made the "calls."

Random thoughts.

We've now got three characters motivated by brutal deaths. Picard. Rios. Seven. What does that mean? I dont know, but jesus guys. Also, while Rafi is not reacting to literal death, the death of her family bonds is still pretty intense. Then again that was brought upon by the slaughter of mars, so...

Every interaction between Picard and Seven, no matter how brief, was golden, which makes me wish she became a part of the crew already, instead of becoming a future plot point or another surprise appearance.

Also, the way Maddux was just cast aside makes me reluctant to let myself get swept up in the mystery of this conspiracy. He was literally the lynch pin of the past five episodes and he didn't add anything, except his death proved what was feared. You'd think committing outright murder like that would be risky, accounting for things like video recordings and the EMH being activated, but considering his murderers talents, I'm sure those will be scrubbed pretty effectively.

This is the only episide so far where I'm leery of where were headed, but there still was good so I'm still onboard.

The footage the Dr. was shown by the conspirators was ancient earth footage revealing Lee Harvey Oswald was actually a time-traveling synth.

I'm pretty bummed about Icheb.  It looks like Seven's story arc is going to be about regaining some of the humanity she lost with Icheb.  She's set up to be a recurring character.  I have no idea if she'll appear again this season, but I hope so.

The Fenris Rangers are out there trying to maintain order near the former Romulan Neutral Zone.  That's a pretty interesting idea that I hope gets built on.  I can imagine Starfleet is largely avoiding the area because they just aren't welcome after abandoning the rescue effort.  I would like to know more about how Seven came to join them.

I liked seeing Raffi's personal story.  She alienated her family in the aftermath of the Mars attack as she became obsessed with tracking down the conspirators.  Substance abuse came into it somewhere as well.  She's a mess and she's trying to be better.

Quark's name was on a bar in an establishing shot and he was name-dropped.  Maybe he'll make an appearance eventually.

There was a lot of humor in this episode in contrast with all the death.  Holographic pop-up ads.  Pimp clothes.  Picard's terrible French accent.

For all the build-up around Maddox, he got killed pretty quick.  What does Jurati know?  Will the EMH rat her out?  It seems like Jurati and Raffi need to have a long conversation.

I like how the EMH responds automatically to psychological emergencies.

Did...did they name a character Vajazzle?  It's something very close to Vajazzle.  Anyway, she got vajaporized.  I was sad to see Seven go through with it, but I assume this is just the beginning of her character arc.

According to the official podcast, Vajazzle was originally conceived as a fully CG Caitian who lived in an aviary and ate birds.  But the budget precluded that from happening.

Also from the podcast (which I haven't finished yet):  they consider TAS to be canon.

According to the Internet, her name is Bjayzl.

I rewatched the surgery scene in episode 2 and maybe they are killing the drones and slaughtering them for parts, I didn't notice the heartbeat getting rapid the first time around and the android telling them they've been 'released' is quite ominous for her, we did see ex drones working there earlier.

Also recall the Voyager episode with the Barcley hologram where Ferengi were trying to gain Seven's nanoprobes, there may be a market for them in some regions outside of Federation space like the Orion Syndicate or non aligned human colonies.

Thanks to this dystopia we have seen I am rooting for the Borg to conquer them, they do have good intentions after all, they may transform people into slaves but they are from a quadrant of xenophobes, hunters and polluters.
