@  Jenny : (11 November 2019 - 08:54 AM)

The toy's designed to look like Wipe-Out, anyway.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (11 November 2019 - 08:14 AM)

Didn't they try to retcon that into a figure of speech because that connection went against everybody else's long-term plans?

@  Maximus Ambus : (11 November 2019 - 03:53 AM)

There's still some connection given Trypticon was created by Mortilus.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (11 November 2019 - 12:12 AM)

Yeah that toy doesn't exactly look like Necrobot.

@  Sabrblade : (10 November 2019 - 08:24 PM)

But.... it's just "Necro" not "Necrobot".

@  TheMightyMol... : (10 November 2019 - 05:10 PM)

But why does the God of Death need a giant space kaiju? Wait, never mind, answered my own question.

@  Maximus Ambus : (10 November 2019 - 02:15 PM)

Yowza I just realised Titans Trypticon comes with Necro AKA Censere AKA Mortilus.

@  Nevermore : (10 November 2019 - 01:15 PM)

I... think the best equivalent would actually be the British "There is room for improvement".

@  Nevermore : (10 November 2019 - 01:15 PM)

There's always a sense of irony to it, but what the ratio between irony (you really failed) and straightworwardness (at least you achieved something) is depends on the situation and the speaker.

@  Nevermore : (10 November 2019 - 01:12 PM)

The meaning can be both literal (you succeed on one level but fail on another), or it can be utterly ironic (you fail in every regard but the most technical; or even worse, "you really gave your best"), and anything in between.

@  Nevermore : (10 November 2019 - 01:10 PM)

For example: A singer can hit the notes really well, but clearly isn't a native speaker and what little of the lyrics you can make out sounds nothing like what it's supposed to be.

@  wonko the sane? : (10 November 2019 - 01:06 PM)

The premise seems to be the mixing of technical and aesthetic technical qualities towards the overall success.

@  wonko the sane? : (10 November 2019 - 01:05 PM)

But both "hollow victory" and pyrrhic victory" are referring to having lost as much as you've gained. IE; a battle was won but both armies were destroyed. The town being seiged is victorious, but all the soldiers are still dead. Nevermore's concept is more "You did it, but it's so ugly we don't know if you actually succeeded".

@  Sabrblade : (10 November 2019 - 11:35 AM)

Alternately, one could probably also call it a "hollow victory".

@  Sabrblade : (10 November 2019 - 11:35 AM)

Example: In the Powerpuff Girls episode "Uh Oh Dynamo", the monster-of-the-day was a really tough, giant-size one that required the use of a really destructive mech to defeat it. While the monster was ultimately beaten, the city of Townsville was utterly trashed by the mech's weapons in the process. So, while the city was saved from the monster, it was harmed even worse by the mech that saved it, making the victory bittersweet.

@  Sabrblade : (10 November 2019 - 11:32 AM)

@Nevermore, sounds to me like what one might call a "bittersweet victory". The goal was met, but at great cost or by disastrous result that call into question if the achieved goal could even be called a success.

@  Arvegtor : (10 November 2019 - 09:40 AM)

Seems to be close enough to "Pyrrhic victory"

@  NotVeryKnightly : (10 November 2019 - 09:37 AM)

What do you get from putting the German term through a translator?

@  wonko the sane? : (10 November 2019 - 08:57 AM)

That is a ridiculously interesting concept. But I don't think english has a singular term for what you're describing.

@  Nevermore : (10 November 2019 - 08:28 AM)

Is there an English equivalent for what we Germans call "deductions in the B rating"? Context: Someone did something and suceeded on a technical level (as in, achieved the intended goal), but failed to some degree in the details, i.e. there was some collateral damage, or while a technical success, the end result is an aestetic failure. It can be used highly ironically, as in "barely achieved the intended goal, but failed so much in every aspect that's not purely technical that it might as well be considered an utter failure altogether." The German term is derived from the old judging syste in figure skating, which gave separate ratings for "technical merit" and "presentation", with the latter being the origin of the German term.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (10 November 2019 - 02:32 AM)

Huh. I did not know before today that "medieval" had an alternate spelling "mediaeval". Like "paleontology" and "palaeontology".

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 November 2019 - 04:15 PM)

'Beast Wars in underrated' the comment went. I exploded.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (09 November 2019 - 02:19 PM)

Absolutely.

@  wonko the sane? : (09 November 2019 - 02:14 PM)

So... you can look like a cop from the 70's AND a huge nerd at the same time?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (09 November 2019 - 02:09 PM)

I feel like the best way to carry the Switch would be an under-arm torso holster.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (09 November 2019 - 12:31 PM)

It's not. hell. If the 3DS zelda case just stretched a LITTLE more it would fit.

@  TheMightyMol... : (09 November 2019 - 03:38 AM)

I feel like the Switch Lite is a bit big to have hanging on your belt like that, but I don't take my Switch out with me often anyway.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (09 November 2019 - 01:13 AM)

I must be the only one who wants a switch lite case with a belt loop. o.O

@  TheMightyMol... : (08 November 2019 - 03:03 PM)

I'm gonna have "Chainsaw Buffet" and "Candy For the Cannibal" by Lordi playing in my head all night.

@  Maximus Ambus : (08 November 2019 - 12:36 PM)

Trick or treaters can only consent to cannibalism in Germania.

@  Sabrblade : (07 November 2019 - 12:12 PM)

Hey, if the trick or treaters can't take some loving insults, that's their problem.

@  Arazyr : (07 November 2019 - 11:39 AM)

Just make sure to put the leftovers in the fridge, so they don't get spoiled.

@  TheMightyMol... : (07 November 2019 - 09:52 AM)

@  wonko the sane? : (07 November 2019 - 09:38 AM)

A cold beer, a warm fire, some smores and trick or treaters... Man, you got this life thing down.

@  wonko the sane? : (07 November 2019 - 09:37 AM)

That actually sounds pretty awesome.

@  MEDdMI : (07 November 2019 - 08:59 AM)

@  TM2-Megatron : (06 November 2019 - 11:41 PM)

I think a lot of the decline you see in Halloween is due to newcomers to Canada who don't really get it... I mean, there are only a handful of countries in the world that practice this particular oddity

Trunk or Treats have become more popular because it is supposed to be safer, and even if it isn't, it just tends to be easier for the Trick-or-Treaters.

@  wonko the sane? : (06 November 2019 - 11:00 AM)

That's okay: between ever more extreme weather, ever more violent society, and general paranoia of parents: halloweens not doing to well out here either.

@  Anonymous X : (06 November 2019 - 09:30 AM)

We used to have Bonfire Night here in the UK as our thing instead of Halloween... It's withered away for the most part. Halloween used to be the strange American tradition you knew of from ET or various cartoons

@  TheMightyMol... : (06 November 2019 - 06:33 AM)

So that's why I never get invited anywhere.

@  Otaku : (05 November 2019 - 12:36 PM)

@Bass X0 Are we talking about the quality of the costumes or their subject matter?  The former is a natural result of cosplay growing less and less niche over the decades.  The latter isn't new; mass produced stuff is at least as old as you or I and are we sure no one dressed as a cowboy or astronaut or whatever in the 1950's?  Monsters weren't allowed at certain parties, strange as it sounds. Obi-wan's delivery of the whole "younglings" lament to Padme was so wooden, anyway, it's more of a comic moment than dramatic.

It would be pretty daft to scrub the word younglings given how Disney does Imperial parades, encourages kids to dress up as Vader and Kylo, etc.

Generally, I think its not really coming from the head of Disney but more from whoever in charge of the park and how they view things but that merely my view.

apparently Disney wants to scrub the term "younglings" from canon so they don't have to deal with the fact that Anakin Skywalkers' a child killer.

Next its the Creature Shop!

The Creature Shop is really cool, the cast members insist youre adopting a pet and they give you these cool cafe boxes to hold them (I declined the cage box for this guy). A little girl in front of me was getting a Porg and the cast member was super sweet, telling her how the feed it and asking what she was going to name it. Adorable.

I myself got a Mynock! All the toys in the creature shop have some sort of action feature to help them come alive. The mynock has a lever hidden in its tail that makes it flap its wings and squeak. It also suction cups onto glass surfaces because of course it does. Its a mynock!

His name is Harold.

does he chew on the power cables?

Only if youre a bad pet owner.

The rest of my stuff was traveling overland with my folks, and just arrived. Tomorrow Ill do a full opening of the Dejarik Set, and Tuesday Ill show off the Droid. But for now, enjoy these two lighter things!

The first is a nice simple set of Chance Cubes that come in a little bag. Simple and good locking, 2 colors, 3 of each on each dice. Gamble your Podracers away!

The second are the amazingly cool Diet Coke and Sprite drink grenades. These look fantastic and I plan to clean and display these babies. Love it!

I am actually a little worried in a few years that they will drop the unique packaging for the Coke products.  All it take is some middle management to decide they have a great idea to save money, and they get removed.

Turning the dial down on the entire immersion of the land is a concern, as I can easily see some guests complaining about it, especially the food items as right now there are no standard park fare.  That would hurt the experience big time, so it is just another reason to visit this place sooner rather then later.

I shoulda picked up the regular coke but I didnt :(

One thing though - these soda bottles are 6 bucks, which is double Disneylands already crazy prices. Theyre probably making bank on these.

Id be a bit more concerned about the food. Theres going to be a lot of kids ticked that they cant just get a burger or pizza in the land. Everything to eat there is unusual and picky eaters will have a cow (err, nerf?). Im willing to bet a space burger shows up within a year.

Aren't the drink "grenades" just relabelled from Christmas-themed containers (meant to look like ornaments)? In theory there's a reliable supply (and repurposing them like this might actually be saving money somewhere along the line).

I have actually already heard complaints from people in various places, blogs and YouTube, about this.   It is especially silly when if you want those normal food items, you have access to them outside of GE.  Now right now with the reservation system it does mean you have to think a little about when you get your boring standard fare, but still, it is very doable, just eat before or after your reservation.  This also becomes moot when they stop using the reservations.

But yeah, it is a worry, as this kind of thing has hurt many restaurants, particularly in WDW, in the past.  Numerous restaurants there are a lot less interesting after complaints.

At least the cantina should be safe.

I think the Avatar section of Animal Kingdom is similar in the fact that it has all in-world food.  So you have to go outside of it to get something different.

I'd prefer that they stick with the way it is.  People have to either eat something there or just wait until they're somewhere else.

DEJARIK SET!

Its amazing to me this hasnt come out sooner. Star Trek has had 3D chess sets available since I was a kid, and Star Wars is cooler than Star Trek yet somehow, despite being super toy centric and prominently featured in A New Hope, weve never gotten a playable version.

Until now.

So this baby clocks in at $50, and Id honestly say its an amazing value. The board is made of
wood and is a hefty, eye catching display piece. The figures are plastic but are painted to look like carved and painted wood as well (and are based in a brief cameo of a physical set seen in Rogue One. In addition, the set doubles as a checker set. The top is removable and on the bottom side is a checker(or if you prefer, chess) board, and inside is whole checker set (rebel and Imperial themed). This is a top notch product - if I had to find any fault in it, itd be that the Dejarik pieces dont fit inside. But that doesnt matter if you want to display this bad boy.

As for the game itself, well, I havent had a chance to play yet. Looking at the rules, its kind of a Chess game that is simultaneously more and less complex. While there are only 4 pieces per side, each piece (the four pieces are mirrored on each team, with differing looks but the same role) has a movement or an attack movement, thats different for each of the four pieces. Further, you can chain attacks to try and get multiple enemy pieces. Fortunately, the set comes with a pair of reference cards to help you remember whats what. The goal is pretty simple- kill your opponents pieces. If you have only one piece left, you must kill an enemy piece within three turns or you lose. Thats about it.

Ive looked through the Wookiepedia article on the subject, and it has different rules entirely. Maybe some day Ill make a second set of reference cards for those.

Still, Id say this is probably my favorite purchase, even if I did have to lug this giant heavy thing all around the park.

All right, time to do this.

5336-B001-1-B9-D-44-AB-B0-EE-31-BABD740-

I wont lie, Im a little bitter about this droid. Its not his fault really. But the hour long wait to build him, combined with them being out of the backpack (so I had to lug his awkward box around the land) and them not having the color scheme I wanted (I wanted black with orange and teal highlights) and the price make me not as nearly as enthusiastic about him as I wanted to be.

So here he is. I havent named him yet - I probably should. R3-DT? (Readit). R3-DR? (Reader). R3-DY? (Ready)

I dunno. Ill sit on it. So if youre thinking about buying one, I dont really know what to advise. Is he cool? Yes. Is he $100 cool? Ehhhhh.

EC0-C8-D05-8-A72-41-BC-9-FB3-8-BC37399-C

He does interact with the land but not enough. Apparently he does so by Bluetooth sending out signals, so Im wondering if someone will make an App that does similar at home, because without its hes just a remote control droid. His flaps all open up, and you can insert personality chips which change his voice (and reactions in the land). Mine has an orange resistance chip in him.

42-D044-EF-4-FA1-4-C77-8-A79-5-F0-B19-E1

9-FAA19-DA-6-EDE-4-F52-8-EE2-C1-FD2-A1-E

I also bought the Drink Tray accessory because I thought it would be awesome. This I have to give a solid Do Not Buy. Its only 12 bucks but its annoyingly flimsy - designed to come apart easily and it does. Far worse, it only sits properly on him if hes in the standing position, and he cannot roll around while in that position at all. Its an amazingly frustrating add on, and so I recommend avoiding it. It looks nice but thats it.

You can also get a tool assortment (which is fine), and rocket packs or lasers which plug into his legs and light up (which are cool) but I passed on all those.

Overall, hes cute, but he just doesnt feel as special as I wanted him to.

Also theres a rumor that getting 2 droids together will cause them to interact. This is confirmed false. Youll only get interaction with the land itself - and without a backpack, that doesnt seem worth it.

I loved the idea behind these guys but they seem like a stumble. Maybe theyll introduce some better features in the future - an upgraded chip might do wonders.

And thats all I got from Galaxys Edge.

Seeing all these Galaxy's Edge droid and lightsaber build videos on Youtube makes me want to finish my lightsaber and start designing and building a droid of my own.  The ones in Disneyland are neat but too toyish to appeal to me.  What's the point of having a droid if you can't use it to spy on your boss?

The droids are only appealing in the toy sense alone, but the lightsaber building is mostly everything I would want. Its just the limits put on that make it a tad frustrating. I get it if each of the 4 sets only go together uniquely in mechanical design, but if they have universal connections between all sets its restricting to be set with only a small pool of parts to make your personal saber itself unique.

That said has any YouTuber mixed between set with two sabers yet? I would like to know.

One neat thing that has been confirmed is you can get a Maul style double light saber.  If you have two of the right type of Lightsabers that use Sith parts, they can connect and become one unit.

This obviously is a really expensive way to get that kind of lightsaber, but the option is there.
