@  Maximus Ambus : (30 October 2020 - 02:21 PM)

I think I'll watch The Haunting (1963), Carnival of Souls (1962) and The Innocents (1961) for Halloween.

50/60's Twilight Zone, the 80's, millennium and recent ones also, all are in The Twilight Zone.

@  unluckiness : (28 October 2020 - 05:53 AM)

It's only fitting that SImpsons have halloween specials since it's been a shambling corpse of its former self since its teens.

@  Maximus Ambus : (28 October 2020 - 04:12 AM)

No I caught one of the latest one with parodies of Stranger Things which admittedly is horror series but Heaven Can Wait and The Shape of Water are Fantasy films. Plus implications of the characters being sociopaths or twisted has become a norm these days.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (28 October 2020 - 02:58 AM)

Which probably adds to the "reasons they should just stop making more of The Simpsons" pile.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (28 October 2020 - 02:58 AM)

You make it sound like The Simpsons becoming less repetitive is a bad thing.

@  Maximus Ambus : (28 October 2020 - 02:48 AM)

Remember when Simpsons Halloween specials parodied horror movies and would have the characters make off out of character remarks like "we chucked donuts at a old man for kicks."? they don't and can't do that any more.

@  Steevy Maximus : (27 October 2020 - 08:00 PM)

@  Sukoshiko : (25 October 2020 - 12:25 AM)

Tesla Cybertruck: amazing or just silly looking? I can't decide.

@  Sukoshiko : (25 October 2020 - 12:24 AM)

Weird question: I had to deal with a guy today... I'm not exactly up on modern fashions... or even archaic fashions... But this guy... Tuxedo Jacket and shirt, studs in all the button holes except the bottom one, blue jeans, and cowboy boots... Take a moment to imagine that get up. And this was to a business meeting, trying to impress someone. What look is that? Who on earth would dress that way? (I mean on purpose)

@  wonko the sane? : (24 October 2020 - 06:04 PM)

I think the few up here were lost to bad placement, poor weather, and the usual language trap.

@  TM2-Megatron : (24 October 2020 - 04:25 PM)

There are 5 spread around southwestern Ontario, all run by the same company. I've only been to the one in my area, but it seems to do good business even in non-pandemic times. On long weekends, when they do triple features, there's a normally a lineup to get in Friday and Saturday nights

@  Telly : (24 October 2020 - 01:51 PM)

there been one outside of my town for as long as ive been alive at least. its gone through its share of owners and periods of being closed down, but its been open for the past decade at least

@  Otaku : (24 October 2020 - 12:08 PM)

Bias from personal experience, but drive-in theaters are nearly extinct.  I grew up near one but it went out of business in the late 80s, and was torn down and replaced with some other business by the early 90s.

@  wonko the sane? : (24 October 2020 - 07:47 AM)

Out here, I mean. Couldn't comment on their popularity in place where they actually exist.

@  wonko the sane? : (24 October 2020 - 06:44 AM)

I wouldn't know. They've only come back into vogue with the social distancing from the plague, and while some places have made an effort to shoestring the places together, it's all largely too distant to be accessible.

@  TM2-Megatron : (23 October 2020 - 09:46 PM)

I'd hate to see ours replaced by condos. They're a great way to spend an evening, whether with family or on a date. And they've never been as common in Canada as the US, so we cna't afford to lose as many

@  wonko the sane? : (23 October 2020 - 09:45 PM)

Largely they were either poorly placed or bought out and torn down to be replaced by something other than over priced short term parking. Mostly condos.

@  TM2-Megatron : (23 October 2020 - 09:14 PM)

I guess your winters are worse, so they have a shorter operating season. Drive-ins in the Toronto area can usually operate until early or mid-December; maybe even into early January if there's no real snowfall, and open up again sometime in March.

@  TM2-Megatron : (23 October 2020 - 09:13 PM)

THere's really only 1 left in the entire province?

@  wonko the sane? : (23 October 2020 - 09:03 PM)

Ha! It's probably faster for me to drive to your drive in than to make my way to the only one left in quebec.

@  TM2-Megatron : (23 October 2020 - 06:57 PM)

Fortunately we still have a drive-in theatre that's exempt from the closures about a 10 minute drive away

@  TM2-Megatron : (23 October 2020 - 06:57 PM)

Theatres around here are closed again for at least another couple weeks (wouldn't be surprised if it's extended by another month or so, either), but that's what they've been doing here as well. Playing the old classics

@  Maximus Ambus : (23 October 2020 - 02:36 PM)

I got Earthrise Megatron, he's better then I thought he'd be though Netflix Megatron is still tops.

@  Bass X0 : (23 October 2020 - 10:44 AM)

The original Rocky movie is also showing. May go next weekend. That’s how you get people back in the theatres - show the old classics every adult loves.

The thing I hate is people try to force you into that umbrella when you aren't.

We do it because we remember when we were in denial too.

Furry is actually really good for self-actualization. It emphasizes building an identity that is uniquely you, defined by you and no one else. Some folk see it as an opportunity to drop whatever masks they have to wear in the greater society and just be themselves.  Some create an idealized version of themselves(filtered through some critter, natch) and then use that as a goal to help transform themselves. Some use characters to explore parts of themselves they didn't know existed - I know of one artist on twitter that found out they were trans in this fashion.

The whole "be who you are, not defined by anyone else" is part of what helped make it a "safe space" for lack of a better term for LGBQT folks to discover themselves, or just straight up be themselves. Of course, it can also lead to some of that famous "furry drama" for the same reasons, especially when one side ends up being less than genuine to start with.

For me, that honestly ended up being Pony stuff. But furry was kind of a half step over from there. I'm not really deep into any big furry communities or anything, though, and of course it's only recently I've really dug into any of it at all. Furcadia doesn't even ring a bell, for instance.

One good thing abut furry is the lack of gatekeepers, you don't need to be up on all the lingo, fandom history, furry celebs and whatnot to fit in, heck, you're probably better off not having experienced these things to be honest. You may not get some old school references from curmudgeonly greymuzzles but that's about it.

That's how I feel about Mayhem. Don't care much about Transformers, but they still tolerate me. Also if furries include non-sexual guess I'm a furry too. Animals are cool and I had a few furry chars before I even met y'all (even if most of them were for laughs).

Yeah, having spent so much time in Transformers and to a lesser extent MLP fandom, a fandom that isn't a monolith built around a product is a welcome change. Transformers is a purely curatorial fandom with very little creativity and a lot of gatekeeping and tru-fan. MLP is or was a lot better on both marks and there's definitely a point at which fanart and our local play-by-post Pony RPG overtook the show and merch as the center of my Pony orbit, which I think is an attitude that wasn't entirely unusual for MLP fans. More space to play, less junk. With furry stuff, I've dipped my toes in a few different communities so far and been able to try things on and try things out without ever feeling excluded, and that's kinda awesome.

And yeah, Mayhem would be a very special case if I thought of it as a fan community, but I've heard of other similar things happening to what we've got here, with the closest comparison I think being an online community that a friend of mine used to be a part of that actually started as a local message board for their actual-physical home town. Of course I think this one's the best one because it's our one, but. = ]

Out of morbid curiosity, where does one go to participate in the furry community? Are there specific sites or is it sub-communities of larger sites like Reddit or Twitter?

Anywhere and everywhere that supports it basically. My own little bubble these days mostly consists of dragon and 'taur twitter, a dragon discord, a chakat discord, and then whatever new art pops up from the artists I watch on Furaffinity. (I have a presence on a few others too, just FA is the highest traffic and effectively the "default" furry art site still.) Telegram still seems to be the Instant Messenger of choice thanks to stickers, but there's plenty of fur-oriented DIscords out there to my knowledge.  If you want something more visual, there's a population somewhere on VR Chat, Second Life is still around, as well as Furcadia. Text-based also gives you FurryMUCK, SocioPolitical Ramifications(or SPR for short) and Taps(which is heavily adult-oriented, so not going to say much more about that here).  Not sure if FUrryIRC is still around, but the old Usenet groups are a wasteland when I checked them a while back.

Had a few friends I would talk with through MSN before I swore off messengers.

Furries are everywhere these days, discord, telegram, reddit, most major pop culture fansites, hell, I've encountered more furries through left wing politics sites and social media accounts than I have through being in the fandom these past few years. There are a few big furry sites, FA and such, but there is no mecca for furrydom, no one one place where everyone is. Furries will be where furries will be.

tumblr and reddit ... but yeah all of the socials ... hell likely even livejournal and Myspace

Not so much Livejournal, the Furries were the first to leave when it was bought by a Russian company and became subject to the bigotry and spying of the aholes running that nation. It's a shame as I liked that site.

The oddest place I've met someone who was a furry/anthro, was in one of my university courses... he was the professor. He told us right away that he was a dragon. It came off as like a in-joke about his temperament, but later on it became more clear to me. Especially when he showed us a very well-done commission of his anthro dragonsona.

I actually have a few up on my wall at work myself, though they're also work-related imagery so they have an excuse.  Only one person at work ever put two and two together I think, but I missed his remark at first, and he didn't work here for much longer after that(or very long in general) so I don't know for sure(or if he was furry). Basically I don't actively flaunt it, but I don't actively hide it either.  My profile picture in our e-mail is actually an icon I commissioned a few years ago, too, now that I think about it.

I'd class it as more of a monster girl, particularly for how some elements form her "clothing", but I really love this design. April posted it in the Mayhem Discord recently and it made me happy. = ] Such a neat concept and so many lovely little touches.
