"I was gonna buy some Toyhax labels for Earthrise Auto-Whatsit, but since I'd be disrespecting the artistic expression of the designers, I think I'll just forget the whole thing."

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:41 AM)

Like, in general, not going into specific bands or covers. Because I could point out plenty of repainted toys I didn't like as much as the original, too.

@  TheMightyMol... : (17 May 2021 - 06:39 AM)

Is a musician covering a song "fixing" it?

@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

So animated Janeway's character model was released and I'm now confused as to when this Nicktoon is supposed to take place. That hair and uniform are pre-Dominion War

She's not actually Janeway. She's the ship's Emergency Training Hologram based off Janeway.

That's what I'm assuming too. Note that the character model doesn't have any pips on her collar.

Of course there's a figure of Rodimus as some kind of animal girl. Why would I be surprised by this?

Heh, I'm not sure how I feel about the proliferation of multiple simultaneous uniforms in Kurtzman-era Trek.

DIS alongside TOS in the 2250s

FC alongside LD in the 2380s

Still confused why they keep her in an anachronistic uniform. It's not like any of the EMHs don't wear standard issue

There wasn't any plan at the time they introduced the DS9 uniforms to make those the standard new uniform for everyone either. The reality is that every new project needs a new uniform again, which was temporarily not the case for just two series in the middle.

The LD uniforms are nice though. Close enough to just be a stylistic difference, but still something a bit new.

At least there's the simple in-universe explanation that it's the uniform she wore at the age the hologram represents. Out of universe, of course, it does have the perk of letting them avoid having to pick one, which as this discussion demonstrates isn't necessarily easy.

Guess who's coming back?

Also noteworthy: the Bajoran tablet that Sisko smashed.

Ive scrolled and scrubbed back and forth. Where is this tablet from The Sisko you speak of?

@ :12 maybe? only thing i can notice

Huh. It might be the Reckoning Tablet after all based on the design. Pah Wraiths confirmed?

That's the one.  I'm simultaneously excited to see what they do with Bajoran lore and scared to see what they'll do with Bajoran lore.

I was surprised when it was said that Janeway would be coming back because she is so boring and I didn't think she had many fans.  But I suppose if you are making a hologram for helping people get a ship back to Earth from 70,000 light years and needed someone to model it on, Janeway would probably come to mind.

I'm not thrilled to be honest. Q is the go-to Picard antagonist because he was in TNG, because it caught on so well. I just can't picture anything coming out of this that isn't a retread and there's not a lot of wiggle room to change up the formula when it's based on Picard's dynamic with an omnipotent entity. One thing to the credit of the first season if such a thing exists is that we were seeing important things out in the universe we hadn't seen before. Going back to Q feels like a real risk of ensmallening the universe. Maybe they're avoiding that in clever ways, we'll obviously see, but.

Pardon me.  I didn't mean to interrupt.  Did you say "ensmallening"?

Are you kidding? She's the greatest (and most reckless) Captain we've had since Kirk! And I really do mean that unironically too. Voyager might not be the best show, but Janeway's never the problem with it.

Voyager is the Trek show that somehow had a better career after it left broadcast. It's apparently been the statistically preferred comfort food Star Trek on streaming since the Trek back catalogue became available that way. So I think Janeway actually makes sense as a mentor character in a way that no other Trek captain would. There is a reassuring stability and normalcy that's attached to her presence that is completely independent of the series as aired.

I will say, Voyager is probably the best show to have on as background noise while doing other stuff. While it's irksome the status quo doesn't change, the fact that it doesn't means you can zone out for a few hours doing something else, and come back and not be lost as to what's going on overall.

and thats because

the status quo doesn't change

the biggest "wtf" moments for someone coming in blind with a random airing order are: sometimes torres and tom are in a relationship, sometime theyre not. sometimes kes is there, sometimes its 7 of 9. both of which are explained if you catch the right episodes. same with tng and os as we know.. enterprise is somewhat the same, but it switches in seasons 3 and 4. now that i think, i havent seen enterprise airing anywhere since it ended  :??? (streaming doesnt count)

odd that the best trek is the one thats serialized  :)

So this could be some good news, if it turns out to be true.

https://www.thevulca...-nine-remaster/

A Deep Space Nine remaster could finally be on the way, based on a 4K scan of the original camera negatives and new VFX "created by AI" (in part or in full, I'm not sure). The company responsible for the new effects has worked on Discovery, Picard and the upcoming Brave New Worlds. The only thing that gives me pause is the mention of Secret Hideout... but, I mean, as long as they're not allowed to change anything or write new material... it should turn out okay?

The only question that remains is will this be a streaming exclusive, or will it (as it deserves) be released on blu-ray?

I saw that a few weeks ago, but I'm not going to get excited until it comes from a more reliable source.  "New VFX created by AI" is a very strange idea and I wonder what it really means.
