@  Ashley : (21 April 2019 - 10:08 PM)

They frequently do, but yeah there's no rule. Google will usually answer it for a specific restaurant, though

@  TheMightyMol... : (21 April 2019 - 02:57 PM)

Depends on the restaurant and the area. There's no universal rule about it.

@  TM2-Megatron : (21 April 2019 - 02:41 PM)

I thought restaurants were one of the few things that stayed open on holidays, along with movie theatres and the like

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (21 April 2019 - 02:30 PM)

Well here I am hungry on a Sunday afternoon and I head to Chipotle only to find out right then and there that the place is closed for Easter. Yay.

@  MEDdMI : (19 April 2019 - 09:21 PM)

oof, yikes. Good luck.

@  wonko the sane? : (19 April 2019 - 09:18 PM)

We're in the middle of a kitchen reno and NOTHING will be done until tuesday. I could beat a four day weekend with a hammer right now if it meant I could use my stove again.

@  Steevy Maximus : (19 April 2019 - 06:47 PM)

Can't beat 4 day weekends either.

@  Steevy Maximus : (19 April 2019 - 06:47 PM)

I prefer later shifts myself, but my 3 day weekend shift isn't bad. Nice to work without those administration busy bodies poking around.

@  Nevermore : (19 April 2019 - 04:12 AM)

Yeah, traffic is a plus as well. Rarely got any trouble getting to work on late shift (even with the neverending construction site on the highway), and when my shift is over, there's hardly any traffic at all anymore.

@  MEDdMI : (18 April 2019 - 06:27 PM)

while I don't have weekends consistently off, working 2nd shift isn't so bad. I'm more likely to do stuff before work than after (when I'm already tired). Plus no rush hour traffic

@  TM2-Megatron : (18 April 2019 - 05:03 PM)

Switching shifts constantly is never good for one's health. There was a time when I worked overnights steady for about 2 years; did wonders for my health, as well

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:36 PM)

Don't miss early shift (and especially switching back and forth every two weeks) a bit.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:36 PM)

Man, permanent late shift really has done wonders for my overal well-being. Never having to get up early for work, staying up late, weekends off... a ot of my coworkers think I'm crazy, but late shift is really my preferred shift.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:33 PM)

(My total lack of sleep on that day might have contributed, though.)

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:33 PM)

At noon, it was warm.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:33 PM)

On Monday, we went on strike early in the morning, I was also wearing to jackets and gloves and my toes and fingers were freezing.

@  wonko the sane? : (18 April 2019 - 04:31 PM)

Nope, right now my days are doing that. Frigid at night (Well, just below zero, but still.) and warm enough to be always be ill prepared during the day.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:28 PM)

Today it's so warm I had to take a shower to wash off the sweat after a lengthy bike trip.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:27 PM)

This past Friday I was wearing two jackets and winter gloves outside and took a hot bath when I returned home.

@  Nevermore : (18 April 2019 - 04:27 PM)

Is "April weather" an issue in other countries as well, or is that specifically a German phenomenon?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 April 2019 - 11:04 AM)

Well, when you understand the history of the area it make sense. It's basically a series of countries buying the place, moving in, saying "we rule you people now", and the locals shrugging and responding, "okay, you have fun with that".

@  Sabrblade : (16 April 2019 - 07:58 AM)

When did we all turn into Henry Higgins?

@  unluckiness : (16 April 2019 - 03:16 AM)

To be fair, most Americans can't get the hang of English, so I can understand why.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 April 2019 - 03:15 AM)

(And yeah, Calliope is a Greek muse, not French, but the street was named BY the French when they took over.)

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 April 2019 - 03:10 AM)

In New Orleans there's a bunch of streets with French names that are pronounced by locals with a more English emphasis, for example "Calliope Street" is pronounced "CAL-lee-ope".

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 11:56 PM)

I figured as much for Canadians.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 April 2019 - 11:37 PM)

hm; whenever I've heard people talk about the school they said it the same way as the cathedral...but I guess that's in Canada, so they're probably more familiar with the cathedral than the school

@  Dracula : (15 April 2019 - 11:11 PM)

There's plenty of place names in the US like that. Around here we have an "el doh-RAY-doh," and up north there's a Cairo that's pronounced "kay-roh"

@  RichardT1977 : (15 April 2019 - 09:56 PM)

Yeah, the common pronunciation of the University is probably the reason most Americans don't pronounce the Cathedral name correctly.

@  Arazyr : (15 April 2019 - 08:03 PM)

That's my understanding of how the two are supposed to be pronounced as well.

@  Echowarrior : (15 April 2019 - 07:42 PM)

When I'm talking about the cathedral, I say "noh-treh dahme". When I talk about the university, I say "noh-ter dayme". I don't see a problem with that.

@  Paladin : (15 April 2019 - 06:26 PM)

guessing "Hunchback" just got bumped WAY down the list for Disney's live-action remakes...

@  Patch : (15 April 2019 - 05:56 PM)

We all pronounce it wrong, so no one knows enough to care.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 April 2019 - 05:40 PM)

It'd be odd for most Americans not to know how to pronounce Notre Dame, considering they have a University with the same name that's the subject of a relatively popular film based around a sport most Americans love

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 04:22 PM)

Three or four more hours will be needed to contain the fire.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 04:22 PM)

Update from France 24: the Paris Fire Brigade says two towers and the main structure of the cathedral have been saved from complete destruction.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 03:57 PM)

One does not have to speak French to know that rhyming with "voter name" is off the mark.

@  Locoman : (15 April 2019 - 03:51 PM)

Really? It's an international tragedy and you're zeroing in on the people who maybe don't speak French?

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 03:44 PM)

@Tm_Silverclaw I just read on BBC News that the cause is not yet clear, but officials suspect the fire could be linked to renovation work.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (15 April 2019 - 03:42 PM)

Oh boy, here we go with the U.S.-American newscasters who can't pronounce "Notre Dame" correctly.

@  TheMightyMol... : (15 April 2019 - 03:38 PM)

Too soon to say.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (15 April 2019 - 03:20 PM)

Do we know if it was an attack? Arson? Or just bad wiring?

@  Nevermore : (15 April 2019 - 02:10 PM)

Religion is dead?

@  Paladin : (15 April 2019 - 02:01 PM)

major cathedral burning down on Holy Week is some kind of metaphor.

@  Benbot : (15 April 2019 - 12:54 PM)

Hard to believe a wonder of the world could just be wiped out so easily. Hopefully they can still save it

@  Benbot : (15 April 2019 - 12:51 PM)

Well, Notre Dame is burning down

@  Benbot : (15 April 2019 - 10:05 AM)

yikes I thought the site was going to be down for a while

@  Nevermore : (14 April 2019 - 09:07 PM)

So, time for another strike. No sleep for me tonight. Oh well.

@  Nevermore : (14 April 2019 - 09:04 PM)

Think Game of Thrones "light" meets Cabaret and you get the idea.

I had a dream that went from a bus to gnomes and it gave me a sense of fear, anger, courage and happiness. I'm wondering what it meant.

I wish I remembered the details of my dreams with that kind of perfect clarity. I wish that my dreams were spoilers. I mostly dream about other planets, and space.

I think if they inspire us or evoke emotions of some kind, then that's pretty fantastic. I've never interpreted my dreams to be anything beyond whatever is dancing around in the deep recesses of my idiot monkey brain.

I have this weird super power where I can remembered everything I have ever seen from TV. I'm not sure how it works, but I think it also works on my dreams as well.

Memory is so weird. Personally I only remember how to do things and very little else, bad with events and awful with people. Naturally I don't remember even having dreams most of the time, let alone what happened in them. If I do, it's for a few minutes as I'm waking up and they clear out for good.

I'd generally think of dreams as free-associative thought and not meaning much except "hey, this seems to be a thing I'm fixated on because I keep dreaming about it with strong feelings associated," though.

I still remember the first nightmare I ever had. Probably was four years old.

Pounding on our door in the middle of the night. I yelled at my folks to get the door, no answer. So I got out of bed and went to the door - the main entrance to the house was through the living room, but the door we always used was the one in the driveway next to the garage that lead into the kitchen, so that was the door I went to and the one that was being pounded on. In addition to the door itself, there was a screen door attached. I open the door and look out on our driveway to see nobody standing by the door but a unfamiliar black car with one of those gaudy hood ornaments that were all the rage in the 80s. Oldsmobile I think, but that could be time supplying details the dream didn't have.

Anyways, no one around but I notice a small hole in the screen. Being a four year old, I obviously put my finger in the hole and a big, hairy thing - like a cross between a Wampa and a Teddy Bear - rears up on the other side of the screen and bites my finger with a maw full of white fangs.

I wake up.

Thirty freaking years later, I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I tend to just suddenly remember dreams (or impressions of dreams) going about my day. Like, particular words or smells or whatever will somehow just trigger a memory. Corn bread....OH, I'm in a weirdly huge mall looking for something and the stores keep closing, in a dream I mean. Maybe last night, maybe weeks ago? Nothing to do with corn bread though.

So many of the dreams I can remember with any detail are fairly disturbing... like peoples heads just cracking open revealing nothing, me floating away like a balloon with the vague feeling of a wish coming true in the wrong way, back at high school with no clue as to what my schedule is or where the classes are or what my locker combination is, a crocodile I have to draw that keeps changing, pulling an endless supply of staples out of my hand with morbid fascination, getting caught in a nuclear blast and being aware for a few moments after being vaporized...

Criminy, why am I posting this before bed???

I remember having nightmares as a kid and they would hurt. I remember falling and hitting the ground. Most people wake up before hitting the ground, but not me. I hit the ground in my dream and it hurt. But regardless of where I fell from or where I landed, when ever I looked up from the ground I always saw this red and white stripped swing set. I imagine at some younger age that I can't remember I must of fell from a striped swing set and it must have really hurt. When ever my dreams have falling, my brain subconsciously relives that pain I felt.

I'm told I giggle a lot while dreaming. I dunno if that's cute, or unsettling.

Memory is so weird.

Memory is so weird. I can describe in exquisite detail every outfit worn by every woman I've been on a date with and could probably draw a picture of my wife's face in the dark, but I don't remember anyone's birthday. We go through it every year. I still didn't know whether my own mother's birthday falls on the 22nd or the 23rd. I only know it happens on the same day Kennedy was shot. (Which was the 22nd, by the way. Yesterday. Don't worry, I sent her a big box of stuff.)

According to my wife, she can hold entire conversations with me while I'm asleep. My subconscious is quite coherent, apparently. The first time, I was apparently discussing the plot of Bioshock (Which she'd been playing before coming to bed). She didn't believe me for a long time afterwards that I was asleep for that conversation and recalled nothing of it.

And yeah, Birthdays aren't something my mind considers a priority at all. The biggest boon to the social media craze is the fact it helps me remember when people's birthdays are.

Phone numbers. People complain that they have lost the ability to remember phone numbers since cell phones were invented, but I was ALWAYS terrible about that, so that particular feature of modern electronic convenience is delightful to me.

I love talking about dreams, but my god mine make no damn sense.

As for Nightmares, I still remember my last one. I was young. Between Seven and like twelve or something. It involved two guys I don't know running from 'something'  I remember them finding a boarded up door they couldn't get past. I remember them having a cut on their hand, and it oozing blood. They peeled back the skin for some reason to reveal their hand was hollow. No bones or anything, just this leaf like skin.

Last part of it I recall was this guy or one of them having a purple head that had purple worms sticking out. All of them were wiggling, and I distinctly remember one being only half a worm.

Then... that was it. I never had another nightmare. I don't know why, and couldn't tell you what I did, but I just... didn't.

I've had dreams that SHOULD have been nightmares, but I just wasn't scared.

One I remember being very weird, was a Jurassic Park like dream. Dinosaurs were smashing through walls, grabbing and eating people, except even the T-Rex walking right up to me didn't scare me. I just somehow knew it couldn't or wouldn't kill me.

Then to make it even weirder, I had the exact same dream the next night. Except I mean it was the same only in the same things happened at the same time. It was like groundhogs day the movie. Right down to I knew I had the dream before, so I spent it going: "No! Don't stand by that wall! The T-Rex smashes through and eats you!" So the people near the wall would run away and when the T-Rex broke the wall down, he couldn't hurt or kill anyone. I spent the entire dream telling people where to go and where not to stand, preventing the dinosaurs from being able to get anyone.

Okay, so I just had a dream, and am posting what I remember here. If this has some meaning, please let me know.

It started weird off the bat.I was dressed in a tan trench coat walking to the store. I know I was at my grandma's place from when I was a teen, because they use to live right behind a Toys R Us, except in the dream the path lead to a supermarket. While moving I kept thinking how if I wore a zombie mask, I'd look like Mr. X from the Resident Evil games. (AKA a Tyrant)

I was walking along eating a block of cheese I brought into the store. Using some sort of power to cut slices. I remember grabbing and drinking a can of Root Beer (a real brand too that's made with cane sugar) Then going up to the register to pay for it.

Then for whatever reason, instead of me, I'm seeing Spongebob do this, and the entire store has changed to match his world. (Fish manning the registers etc) The fish working the till laughs saying how he's (Spongebob) one of the hardest workers there, and is trying to pay for a soda when he never takes his allowed free drink employees get every day. Spongebob laughs about this and moves on. At the end I think he realizes he had overtime or something, and thought about telling the higher ups about that, but decides that'd make him look silly again and it'll work itself out.

Then I'm waiting outside with someone. It was some guy I don't know. I remember seeing him in the store too. We're outside a typical 'old lady' home, except I don't think anyone actually lives there. (I think the guy was African american, and I know he wore glasses.)

There is snow outside, but we don't seem to mind. We're waiting there because a service I'm pretty sure has shown up in my dreams before, or I just think it did is coming around.

So this construction vehicle comes up. It's like a loader, the thing with the 'digging tool' at the end of a long metal arm. Except on this one, instead of a tool to dig in the dirt, it's a high definition tv. It comes up and places the tv next to us so we can watch a cartoon.

The cartoon is this sorta typical late 80's, early 90's fare. There is a group of good guys, and a group of bad guys. The gimmick is that each car they drive is a combination of two animals. I don't remember any specifics, but it'd be something like a Rhino/Cheeta. Except it's a car you drive with weapons and stuff.

Even weirder, in the dream I remember an episode that came before this one where they were fighting a vehicle that was sentient. It was this huge thing with tank threads, and it had the tail of a scorpion, the body of a spider, and the neck head of a dragon.

I know it wasn't the leader of the bad guys. The leader was a human who had captured one of the heroes and was taunting the other heroes with his safety. He had the hero encased in some mechanical chair and was swinging him around on a wire attached to a crane.

Back in the 'real' world. The loader with the TV leaves during a commercial break. I'm sitting outside waiting for it on a leather chair. The guy with me needs to go do something and leaves.

The driver of the loader comes back and sets the TV back up so I can watch, when he gets out to plug his generator up to the house. Which I guess has power despite no one actually living there.

He's complaining/talking about how his job is to just 'go where people tell him' and the guy with the glasses who was with me before is the one who paid this guy to be here right now.

The reason he's complaining though, is he left to fulfill another request which turned out to be picking up a basket with a mother and father cat and their kittens. He's pissed that he's being used to transport these cats, but ended up having to take them as he was afraid they'd just leave them outside in the snow to fend for themselves. He sets the basket on a table near a wall or fence. We are outside, but I think there is an overhang keeping the snow away.

He goes around the side of the house to plug his generator up and comes back laughing about two rabbits by the front door.

I look and they are made of marble, except they can stop being 'frozen in place' and move around. I call to them and one actually jumps onto my lap. I pet it, and it feels like if marble could somehow mimic what fur and softness feels like, while still having the texture of marble.

Then I woke up.

These are my dreams. This is really typical of the kind of dreams I have.

Had a dream this morning. Gave me a headache cuz I think I was trying to see it to it's conclusion before I was really awake.

It something like Ready player One where someone had a secret prize in a Disneyland type place. I was exploring the park. I remember encountering a water or puddle room I needed to escape from. There were attendants that I needed to avoid.

The location where the prize thing was revealed as a location on the map called Constantine. Are we not suppose to be able to read stuff in dreams? Maybe I was waking up.

I realize the prize must be won by communicating with a lady named Constantine. Either she told me the prize, which was secret I couldn't understand. Or it was a secret to winning the prize. I dunno. I had to wake up then.

ive had dreams where im superman but cant fly, or the flash but cant run fast. i have a hard time texting with a phone in some of them, like i cant spell right or cant find the number in my phone or keep getting the number wrong. i have dreams where i find shops hidden in some out of the way place where i find vintage g1 toys (or very weird transforming toys in general). ive had one where my old high school doubled as a spaceport.

and those are just the ones that are easy to describe. ive had some REALLY weird ones. if i were able remember them when i woke up and write them down, id make a killing publishing short stories lol

ive had dreams where im superman but cant fly, or the flash but cant run fast. i have a hard time texting with a phone in some of them, like i cant spell right or cant find the number in my phone or keep getting the number wrong. i have dreams where i find shops hidden in some out of the way place where i find vintage g1 toys (or very weird transforming toys in general). ive had one where my old high school doubled as a spaceport.

and those are just the ones that are easy to describe. ive had some REALLY weird ones. if i were able remember them when i woke up and write them down, id make a killing publishing short stories lol

That's why I try to write some down. I've seen some that would make rather interesting series.

Then I have two notes on my computer here about dreams that I have no damn clue what I was talking about.

It's a secret to everybody

Are we not suppose to be able to read stuff in dreams? Maybe I was waking up.

I swear this is a myth. I've been able to read words in dreams several times.

Same here.

I remember one dream in which I was making my way through a new town, and as part of it came upon an old-school video arcade.

Located in the back were a trio of vintage Transformers pinball games, still plugged in and still working. The game from 1985 focused on Tracks and someone else (Red Alert?) and told a story as you earned points; I guess the story varied based on what parts of the game you triggered. The game from 1986 was a simple Movie tie-in, with no story or anything to avoid spoilers. The game from 1987 also seemed to tell a story, but I don't remember who it featured.

The '87 game's demo mode featured a message about who you could contact to get your own personal version of the game, and in my dream I was more than ready to write that down just in case the contact information was still valid.

...And then the family cat woke me up, like he usually does at the good parts of whatever dreams I'm having.
