They fight you with sparkles.

@  TheMightyMol... : (24 May 2019 - 03:40 AM)

Phyrexians are the bishie-est.

@  unluckiness : (24 May 2019 - 12:29 AM)

That's why they always wear long sleeved shirts and long pants

@  fourteenwings : (23 May 2019 - 11:36 PM)

Everybody knows the most bishie thing about any bishie is his exposed sinew.

@  MEDdMI : (23 May 2019 - 10:04 PM)

*looks up the humanoid slivers* ...really? People were calling those bishies?

@  TheMightyMol... : (23 May 2019 - 12:45 PM)

Have they made a sliver planeswalker yet?

@  RichardT1977 : (23 May 2019 - 10:29 AM)

"DECOMPOSE!"

@  Paladin : (23 May 2019 - 06:29 AM)

will they next evolve into Inhumanoids?

@  Ashley : (23 May 2019 - 02:42 AM)

the original slivers were spikey monsters. then the evolved into humanoids. now they're back to spikey bug monsters.

@  MEDdMI : (22 May 2019 - 10:42 PM)

Wait. Slivers were bishies???

@  unluckiness : (22 May 2019 - 10:40 PM)

They haven't necessarily looped yet. It's possible they're stuck in "yaoi anatomy"

@  Ashley : (22 May 2019 - 10:35 PM)

I think Slivers in MTG have crossed the bishonen line and looped back around to monstrous

So, now that Game of Thrones is over, when can we get back to The Dragon Prince?

@  unluckiness : (20 May 2019 - 12:19 AM)

Like, half of them nowadays are montages of tweet screencaps from the writer's inbox

@  unluckiness : (20 May 2019 - 12:18 AM)

lol you expected integrity from internet news

@  fourteenwings : (19 May 2019 - 11:33 PM)

I'm mostly confused how news sites went from "Analysing all the amazingness of Game of Thrones" to "Fans sure don't like this season!", like... way to prioritize clicks over a solid editorial opinion

@  fourteenwings : (19 May 2019 - 11:30 PM)

[and there's a recurring setting of a "derelict industrial site"] is this like the Toei Quarry?

@  MEDdMI : (19 May 2019 - 11:17 PM)

@Foffy and then that giant lasagna just tipped over and killed everyone, to be later known as the infamous Bad Monday event.

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (19 May 2019 - 10:59 PM)

Ahahaha!!! Go read the reactions for yourself. To say anything more here risks spoiling the finale for subscribing Allsparkers, the quality of this season notwithstanding.

@  Foffy : (19 May 2019 - 10:59 PM)

pretty wild how heathcliff was in the game of thrones finale, i was not expecting that crossover

@  TM2-Megatron : (19 May 2019 - 10:48 PM)

were they still super pissed?

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (19 May 2019 - 10:48 PM)

Well, as someone who is not into Game of Thrones, it sure was entertaining to open up social media this evening to unexpectedly see headlines about fan reactions to the finale. Lmao.

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 06:12 PM)

But it's also a SUPER-well known location in my region, so these extensive exterior shots without any post production alterations completely ruin the illusion for me.

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 06:11 PM)

I mean, I get why they did it: It's an existing location that fits the purpose, it's open for the public, and they had to shoot some scenes in my home state anyway to due a subsidizing deal.

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 06:09 PM)

Needless to say, it's not in Berlin, and even what's seen onscreen is waaaaay too modern for something that's supposed to exist in 1929 (even moreso as a derelict site in 1929). The structures seen haven't even been built until the 1960s!

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 06:07 PM)

I'm currently in the process of watching season 2 of Babylon Berlin, and there's a recurring setting of a "derelict industrial site" or whatever it's supposed to be on the show, and I easily recognize it as a place only a few minutes from where I live (it's actually a former ironworks site that's been turned into a public park).

@  Xellos : (19 May 2019 - 05:52 PM)

Ever since I went to Japan last year, I have friend who dread watching anime with me due to that...

@  Xellos : (19 May 2019 - 05:51 PM)

Not hugely, but I am the type to notice places once I have been there and say "Hey, I've been there!"

@  wonko the sane? : (19 May 2019 - 05:50 PM)

Half of new york city (on tape.) is actually montreal.

@  TM2-Megatron : (19 May 2019 - 05:50 PM)

I watched Death Wish 5 last night and clearly recognized Toronto streets; didn't pull me out of Bronson's 1-man war on drugs or fashion or whatever it was that pissed him off that time

@  TM2-Megatron : (19 May 2019 - 05:49 PM)

it's nice to finally be thought of as exotic by somebody! lol

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 05:48 PM)

In an "I cannot possibly make my brain ignore the location I'm familiar with and pretend it's whatever the story claims it is" way?

@  Nevermore : (19 May 2019 - 05:42 PM)

Question for those of you living in exotic locations such as the US or the UK: If you watch a movie or a TV show that features a real-life location as a stand-in for someplace else, and you recognize the real-life location due to having been there in person, does that pull you out of the story?

@  Xellos : (19 May 2019 - 05:15 PM)

Maybe you should have installed macOS in your house instead.

@  Noideaforaname : (19 May 2019 - 04:40 PM)

Nothing like coming home after a long day to find a bird in the house. And then once you sit down for a well-earned rest after leading the bird back outside, you find it had a friend. A friend who *really* doesn't understand how windows work...

@  PlutoniumBoss : (19 May 2019 - 01:26 PM)

Bingo. The big polls don't tell people what's actually happening because that doesn't sell.

@  fourteenwings : (19 May 2019 - 10:59 AM)

IIRC there are good polls but data is easily manipulated so they give people what they want to hear

@  wonko the sane? : (19 May 2019 - 10:58 AM)

The only way to get people interested in politics is to make into reality TV. So they lie to do it.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (19 May 2019 - 01:38 AM)

Yeah, polling these days is garbage.

@  Sean Whitmore : (18 May 2019 - 11:53 PM)

Well, he was an honest man. He wasn’t gonna lie to a 5-year-old.

@  Paladin : (18 May 2019 - 08:34 PM)

Grandfather once said to me, "I'm going upstairs and hug your grandma."

@  Sabrblade : (18 May 2019 - 07:08 PM)

Mama always said that you can tell a lot 'bout a person from 'is shoes...

@  TheMightyMol... : (18 May 2019 - 03:54 PM)

Life is like a box of chocolates. Stay out of the sun or melt into a pile of gross slop.

@  wonko the sane? : (18 May 2019 - 10:26 AM)

Greasy, disappointing and still managing to be over priced?

@  Lancer : (18 May 2019 - 10:22 AM)

After giving SF3 a fairer shake then I have in the past I decided I still don't like it

Sure there are some great animations for the characters I do play as but no Cammy and Chun-Li late edition to the series really bring it down

I don't like a lot of the new characters at all and the story and final boss can all go die in a sprite filled fire

Yeah, I don't think it'll ever be my favorite. I mean, when I do play it, I still only play with the SF II characters. That kinda says something.

But I do like it more than I did at first. It's not as intimidating as it was at first. I got all the way to Gill...once...in all the times I've played. But that's okay. The only ones I've beaten at are are Alphas 1&2...and not every time at that. So I don't necessarily look to beat any of these. They're just fun to play.

The animation is gorgeous and the designs are very much a product of the 1990's.

Still I like it and enjoy playing it. Though I never got the appeal of Alex.

So I'm trying to watch Street Fighter II V (in between video games, manga and movie queues).

It's...actually pretty meh. Epilepsy inducing moments, ho hum voice acting, characterization that doesn't nearly match what we expect in today's franchise and so many moments of "is that what Japanese really think of the outside world?"

Still making my way through it though.

So I'm off on vacation this week. Now that I've finished up my Firefly marathon, I figured I'd try some Street Fighter II V.

So...Ken's a redhead, the first American we see is a rude morbidly obese woman, the U.S. Airforce is basically a pack of thugs...first two episodes and...I have concerns.

I prefer the UK dub over the US dub personally but fortunately the UK dub has never been rereleased or made available online.

Its a good show, but the true mastermind behind Bison is seriously dumb. I dont know what possessed the writers to do that.

Just because you can't win doesn't mean you stop working.

So, let me tell y'all a story.

When I was a kid, somewhere in my teenaged years, I played Street Fighter II. I loved Street Fighter...a lot.

When I was in college, I saw that there was an animated movie on VHS. So of course I got the one that said it was the bloodier version...because you know, I hate to not get what I pay for.

But it turns out even that bloodier version was still censored...majorly. Woe is me. I live in the US and they don't think we can handle the full Chun-Li shower scene.

Well a few years ago they released the uncut DVD that had a vastly less censored UK version and the totally uncut Japanese version. I couldn't be happier. I was ecstatic. I bought it right up.

But as it turns out, once you get an HD television that's meant for wide-screen things in HD...some "widesreen" DVD's just don't fill the entire screen. Plus there's the whole thing of not being HD.

Guess what I found this week!

https://www.amazon.c...L70_&dpSrc=srch

It's completely uncut. You can even play it in English. Yes...for the first time...in English...Uncut. It fills the HD TV screen. It's Bluray High Def. Hugging...awesome!

I only played enough to confirm it was uncensored. I plan on actually watching it tomorrow. But guys! This is a thing that exists now!

:)

I had the original "uncut" VHS and a bootleg of the Japanese version.

I much preferred the Japanese version overall.  Even though at first I liked the American version's music, I found it ill suited after my second viewing (back over 20 years ago).

This is a pretty robust release. The video is all Japanese uncut. But you can listen to the Japanese audio (stereo), English PG13 (stereo no swearing), English US Unrated (5.1 some swearing) or English UK Unrated (stereo with f-bombs). They even put a mix with the English UK unrated voice acting with the Japanese music. I kinda prefer KMFDM while Chun Li kicks Vegas ass, but to each their own. You can also listen to the Japanese isolated score.

And before you ask, they actually did think about putting the audio tracks from versions that have been cut down to the uncut video. They filled the gaps, and did an amazing job actually.

So yeah, even if you have other versions of this, I actually do see every reason to get this release. More than a year old, I really want to know why I'm only just now finding out about this.

Was keeping quiet but I guess I'll stick my head in...

I always liked Twelve. Apparently I'm the only one.

I like Twelve but as an almost deliberate odd pick. Different visuals and playstles exist specifically to try to pull in different people's tastes. Tons of people hate Abigail while some people like him.

Still I like it and enjoy playing it. Though I never got the appeal of Alex.

I like Alex and there's interesting positives and negatives about him that you got me thinking about. And while his design is part of it, some of it is contrast and some of it is the timing. More than anything:

Alex is not "Ryu".

It's a mild oversimplification but Alex on release was such a different protagonist. In a legion of games across the genre that usually give the protagonist variations of the projectile+uppercut+gap closer playstyle (though a few of note evolved out of that over time), Alex was a grappler. In fact, he was the grappler and the only true heavy upon the release of SF3: New Generation. And unlike most Capcom grapplers, he (seemingly...) had a ton of options. The visual language was different, reading way more WWE. In that, he felt a bit more like an actual street brawler than trained martial artist and is almost more similar to Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury stylistically or perhaps a Final Fight character. And adding onto the difference was his theme. Alex may not be my favorite character but 'Jazzy NYC' is one of my favorite fighting game stage themes and I know a number of people who like it.

Problem with Alex is that some of his positives are simultaneously negatives. If you don't like playing grapplers, no amount of "YOU CAN'T ESCAPE" and hitting someone with a big grab will convince you. While he does a good job of maintaining various rules of silhouette and color choice, he's very much the normal guy. Especially early on in New Generation when there actually weren't that many weird characters compared to Third Strike. Doesn't help that despite looking like he has options, Alex is sorta bad and has holes in his gameplay. But story just might be his biggest problem. He's a protagonist who never truly gets to be one. Unlike Ryu (who I have different issues with), Alex either never canonically fights most characters, lost the fight, or won by virtue of them secretly throwing the fight. Not helped by some of the story issues with Gill (but that's an entirely separate discussion). So yeah, I like him but see why others wouldn't.

I'm finally starting the last disk of Street Fighter II V. I must admit, a lot more if it became background noise than I'd anticipated or hoped. But really, it just...isn't good. There's just too much else out there that's better to watch. I mean, I'm glad I have the set because sometimes I do want to watch something purely for nostalgia even if it sucks. Plus since it's out of print, it's nice to know that I have something that only gets more rare as time goes on.

But still...just so much meh!

Okay, back on it after a couple days off. But this last disk is just...dang! They really must have been running out of money here at the end because there is just sooooooooooo much reused footage from previous episodes. Like...moreso than usual even for anime.

Okay, final notes. The first disk was okay. There were epileptic seizure warning moments throughout the entire series. The characterization is like nothing that came before or after and makes me think this would've done better to just not be a Street Fighter thing. But here it is. At least the first disk had some entertaining moments. Second disk...moments were few and far between but I guess it had some.

From there it was just down hill. It was a boring slog of a mess that I really had to force myself through. I either relegated it to background noise or completely nodded off so many times just because it was sooooooooooo boring! I am just so glad to be done with it. Now I can finally move on to other things that have been on my marathon queue.

But seriously, if you have a chance to see Street Fighter II V...just...don't.

3 out of 10 stars...and those three stars are only because the first disk had its moments. Otherwise...stay the hug away!
