Yeah, Cloud is the only Rodimus based on the IDW version, but at those kinds of prices, there are two good 3P options that are a hell of a lot closer to the mark.
Is Cloud Rodimus really
based on IDW Rodimus moreso than any other Rodimus? I mean, it's just G1 Hot Rod colors laid out across the Generations Springer mold. IDW Rodimus is the same color scheme laid out across a robot with a vaguely similar shape, so naturally the they end up resembling each other a bit. I don't think that necessarily means that they were looking at IDW Rodimus when designing Cloud Rodimus's deco.
It's one hundred percent meant to evoke IDW Rodimus. First and foremost, the use of the mold was clearly intending to evoke that design by the similarity in the general shape of the head.
Sure we've gotten Hasbro Hot Rods with a yellow crest, but never a TakaraTomy Hot Rod or Rodimus (not counting Superlink as that just tweaked the Hasbro deco) with a yellow crest. The angular features and overall pointyness are not a trademark of Hot Rod outside of the IDW (and perhaps Animated) design, and this representation was a big departure for it.
Besides the yellow crest, there are also clear features that are carried over. The yellow hands. This is not a trademark for Hot Rod. The Kiss Players figure had it, but that's it. I can't recall the mold layout between Hot Rod and Springer, but I seem to recall they did some reconfiguring to make sure he had yellow hands like the IDW figure. Takara also has been pretty adamant on giving him white or orange hands to evoke the cartoon or toy in previous releases (there are a few notwithstanding).
The light gray knees. This is something that is also only on the IDW Hot Rod design and not something that originates any where else.
The red feet. Time and time again, Takara has given Hot Rod / Rodimus either black or gray feet. Giving him red feet seems very un-Takara like, especially when they'll go out of their way to paint his shins black or gray to evoke his original look.
The orange stomach. Another detail that isn't common to Hot Rod.
The yellow detail on his shoulders. Again this is typically light gray or black, and here it's yellow to evoke the yellow shapes on the IDW design.
As was mentioned earlier, the chest. They could have made it more flame like than it already is, but they decided to have it more as a general shape than anything flame specific (other than the sides). That was clearly meant to evoke the angular non-flame shape on the IDW design.
Orange is a detail that Takara has always added to their recent Hot Rod releases (going back to the Henkei! Henkei! release). Here it's gone just like on the IDW design.
I think it's very clear that the IDW design is 100% the inspiration for this figure. It's about as far away from a general Hot Rod deco and scheme as TakaraTomy would likely allow / do while using the same general colors.
