All this awesome SDCC news is really making these boards run slowly.

We have a cornfield? Can I get a few ears?

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:56 PM)

And lastly, if it becomes too much hassle to deal with - it might just get sent into the cornfield and replaced with a Discord box anyway. So cool it.

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Second thing is we do actually have the ability to ban users specifically from using Shoutbox if it's being abused like that

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Hey all - just a reminder and heads up. The Shoutbox has been kept here as a courtesy because it's what you folks like in lieu of Discord - but a few things to remember is that P&R should stay in P&R and isn't really something that needs to be dragged out here in the most public of spaces.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 11:04 AM)

Done.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 10:25 AM)

You can make a new one. I doubt anybody would stop you.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 10:16 AM)

There was a thread but it appears to have disappeared. Might have been lost in one of the older forum sweeps.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 09:58 AM)

Yeah this is pretty much circumventing the fact that we have different rules for political talk.

@  fourteenwings : (16 July 2019 - 09:55 AM)

Okay, so, basically, can we not do politics in here anymore? I mean, considering how often @Nevermore, you talk about your work conditions, don't you think it's time for a dedicated thread in P&R?

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:39 AM)

Scratch that; that's insulting to honest salads. Whatever that was was the text equivalent of hamburger.

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:38 AM)

Would you like some dressing to go with your word salad?

@  Paladin : (16 July 2019 - 09:34 AM)

yes; it now goes "shit piss hug *BLEEP* ^$@^ motherhuger **** turd fart encyclopedia & Socialism."

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:24 AM)

This is an American site, but isn't that unnecessarily severe language? IIRC it's one of the top four offensive pejoratives to English people

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (16 July 2019 - 08:52 AM)

It's amusing how so many (U.S.) wankers in this world love to whine "capitalism good socialism bad!" in the abstract while simultaneously pretending that megacorporations dominating de facto monopolies is anathema to the core capitalistic principle of competition benefits everyone.

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 05:17 AM)

I know Shockwave's super mode is pretty lame and Magnus is kinda greebly but it's not that bad.

@  TM2-Megatron : (16 July 2019 - 12:38 AM)

Though with the luck and caliber of leaders we've had of late in the darkest timeline, maybe it's too much to hope for.

@  TM2-Megatron : (16 July 2019 - 12:36 AM)

Just like democracy, it's not perfect but better than the present alternatives. Capitalism as it's practiced today won't be able to weather the coming wave of automation, though. Best to plan for it and hope for a gentle transition rather than the aforementioned collapse

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 12:27 AM)

Capitalism is the worst amiright? Sent from my iPhone

@  Vexwing : (15 July 2019 - 11:24 PM)

Because the collapse is gonna be just great.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 July 2019 - 10:41 PM)

Let's hope this is late stage and we're on the cusp of something better.

@  abates : (15 July 2019 - 09:45 PM)

Late stage capitalism is the absolute best.

@  TheMightyMol... : (15 July 2019 - 01:33 PM)

So, welcome to all retail, everywhere.

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 01:24 PM)

Oh, and Greenpeace also conducted a protest at a German Amazon facility, to protest against Amazon's practice of throwing customer returns in the trash.

@  Nevermore : (15 July 2019 - 01:17 PM)

Right, because with Amazon, it's just the employees that have to step in dog shit while having no space to breathe.[/slightexaggeration]

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (15 July 2019 - 01:03 PM)

At least I can use Amazon without losing the ability to breath or step in dog shit.

It didn't seem like there was any immediate communication between the two during the showdown at the Byers house. People moving around in the upside-down lit up the lights on the "normal" side, but Jim and Joyce didn't see the bear trap, etc.

Shouldn't gravity be doing something?

Of course there's a figure of Rodimus as some kind of animal girl. Why would I be surprised by this?

Yeah, but man-made objects like houses exist on the other side. Maybe there's a lag time involved in things showing up?

You could make an argument for Will being able to light up the Christmas lights by touching the letters on the wall if they showed up for him in the Upside-Down, but how did he make the ball of lights his mom was holding pulse? Was he just waving his hand through the space where he thought her voice was coming from, or what?

There was a time (as recent as a decade ago even) when kids freely roamed the countryside, and back then in the eighties it was definitely the norm. My friends and I had a solid five-mile ring in which we wandered, biked and played - including a large, State Park - without any notification more than, "We're going to go play!" Cincinnati isn't a big city, but it's big enough, and these kids were in a much smaller town so it's even less unusual. We knew kids whose parents kept them on a tight (but what is now considered normal) leash and we usually felt sorry for them.

Yeah, the show wasn't only set in 1983 to capitalize on nostalgia and reference Spielberg movies (though it did do both of those things, often and well). 1983 was early enough that kids really could bike everywhere unsupervised, someone could be missing for hours without their family worrying, and you could be stranded without a way to make a phone call. But it was also late enough that kids would play Dungeons & Dragons, have walkie-talkies with decent range, and be aware of horror movies that were more advanced than 1950s/1960s drive-in schlock.

I think they really justified the period setting. The show would've been very different if it were set in 2013, or even 1973.

I either heard or read an interview w/the Brothers and they specifically mentioned that they couldn't have told the same story in the modern day specifically for those reasons.

And on a mostly unrelated side-note, I've seen a couple articles that mention the D&D things as being possibly too early, but it's been around since the seventies.
Definitely not too early. There was a scene in E.T. where Elliot's older brother was playing D&D with his friends. That came out in 82

I believe the GCA of 1968 began the 18 or older for rifle and shotgun ammo, 21 or older for handgun ammo. He could be a senior and be 18(doubtful) and still have purchased the 38 ammo, as there are also rifles chambered in it.
I finally got rid of that big white box.

I love the feeling I get from watching this show.  Not only does it perfectly evoke the 80s in general, but the actual experience of being a kid growing up in that time.  It's not exactly ages ago, but it's now long enough and predates enough key developments of modern technology that it was a reasonably difference experience than I imagine children have today.  No instant gratification and access to information, the world felt a good deal larger and more mysterious.  Or maybe it's just me being an old man; who knows.

That giant creature in the other world almost has a Lovecraftian feel to it.

Such a shame the first season still hasn't had a release on physical media... I've heard it looks fantastic in 4K, even on a bitrate-starved Netflix stream.  On an actual UHD disc with Dolby Vision, it would be something.

I love that they dress as the Ghostbusters for Halloween, not just cause of 80's nostalgia; but just because its so fitting that these kids who've dealt with the paranormal of course want to be a bunch of guys that exterminate the paranormal. Its one of those wonderfully fitting things that make this series so great.

I can say that it does indeed look phenomenal on 4K streaming.

Did they have a closed casket service for the little boy who wasn't really dead? It has bothered me since I watched the show, but I suppose a drowning victim could likely have a closed casket funeral so they could go back later and say, "Well the Mom never did think it was his body and obviously she was right" and just pretend that now they don't know who the John Doe was.

There was a lot of uncertainty about whether Stranger Things would ever receive a physical media release, given it's one of those Netflix shows that's distributed and produced exclusively by Netflix.  However, now it seems that Season 1 will indeed be getting a release on Blu-Ray, shortly before Season 2 premieres.  It'll be released in the US as a Target exclusive on October 17th, in special packaging made to look like a VHS sleeve.

Not sure about what's happening outside of the US... Target's history in Canada, so obviously we can't be getting it that way.  I may just have to pick this up on my next drive down to Buffalo, probably sometime around the end of the month.

Didn’t the sheriff find the body full of stuffing? Don’t think they ever even had a funeral. The timeline of the show was only a couple days iirc.

They definitely held a funeral, I remember that Dustin was giddy over the prospect of finding and telling Will about the girl crying during the service.

I don't remember a funeral being shown, so I'm not sure. There was a memorial service at school that might be what Dustin was talking about. That's where Eleven caused the bully to wet his pants. But I assumed that there was a funeral off-screen and thought I remembered it referenced. Maybe no?

I don't think it could be public knowledge that the body found was a fake. That would be a big news story that would ask a lot of questions.
