@  TM2-Megatron : (16 May 2019 - 02:29 PM)

I was just talking cheesy in a dated filmmaking sense, not mind-bogglingly god-awful.

@  Sabrblade : (16 May 2019 - 11:49 AM)

Well, certainly The Last Airbender is worse at being a Superman movie.

@  TheMightyMol... : (16 May 2019 - 11:31 AM)

Is that better or worse than The Last Airbender? I mean, they're both terrible, but....

@  RichardT1977 : (16 May 2019 - 09:28 AM)

And the worst Superman movie is "Dragonball: Evolution".

@  Paladin : (16 May 2019 - 08:01 AM)

the best Superman movie is "The Iron Giant." You cannot convince me otherwise.

@  RichardT1977 : (15 May 2019 - 10:16 PM)

At least even in the first Christopher Reeve movie, when he caught Lois that first time, the background kept scrolling down for a second to indicate it wasn't a sudden stop.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 May 2019 - 10:10 PM)

I guess you had to have been there. I did like the beginning a lot, though; the stuff on Krypton and in Smallville. The movie just got so cheesy once it got to Metropolis, though, it's kind of painful

@  Sean Whitmore : (15 May 2019 - 06:25 PM)

The performances, the cinematography, the significance of a comic book adaptation being treated like a real movie. Silly stuff like that. :)

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 May 2019 - 05:17 PM)

Yeah, I've never really understood what people loved so much about it. Other than the score, of course, which was one of Williams' finest

@  Paladin : (15 May 2019 - 04:06 PM)

and it's not even the dumbest part in that movie.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 May 2019 - 03:16 PM)

Flying Lois around was fine; it was all the Can You Read My Mind nonsense that ruined the scene

@  Sabrblade : (15 May 2019 - 12:08 PM)

The recent Shazam! movie had Billy bumbling his way through learning his powers. But all or most of it was genuinely funny.

@  RichardT1977 : (15 May 2019 - 11:27 AM)

But yeah, in retrospect it makes me cringe the way he caught and carried the helicopter in his public debut in the first film...

@  RichardT1977 : (15 May 2019 - 11:25 AM)

(she wasn't in III long enough to be flown around)

@  RichardT1977 : (15 May 2019 - 11:25 AM)

You mean the Donner movie, the Donner/Lester movie, and The Quest for Peace (for which I don't know the director)?

@  unluckiness : (15 May 2019 - 11:09 AM)

At least he didn't try to fly lois around like in the Donner movies.

@  Cybersnark : (15 May 2019 - 10:45 AM)

My favourite is still from the first episode of the 90s Superman animated series, where Clark initially tries to catch the falling plane by its tail... which snaps off in his hands because physics doesn't work that way.

@  MEDdMI : (15 May 2019 - 09:46 AM)

I think it'd be boring if a hero could use their powers perfectly right off the bat and not have any unforseen consequences (though I also don't keep up with a lot of superhero stuff, so not familiar with those scenes)

@  Dekafox : (15 May 2019 - 09:23 AM)

Overseas, Kamen Rider Gaim did something similar after Kouta(the main character) got his transformation belt. He tried to do a whole bunch of mundane things with it cause he thought it'd make him better at them and they all go horribly wrong.

@  Paladin : (15 May 2019 - 08:59 AM)

superspeed causes enormous friction on fabric. the 1990 Flash had the same issue and it was mentioned in "The Incredibles" too...

@  fourteenwings : (15 May 2019 - 08:45 AM)

Arrow didn't have one (though Oliver got hurt a lot in flashbacks), Supergirl already had her powers, LoT gang also already had their powers mostly and in Black Lightning discovering your powers seems to be more associated with emotional trauma than anything comedic

@  fourteenwings : (15 May 2019 - 08:43 AM)

In the Arrowverse shows... I guess The Flash accidentally ran so fast he shredded his clothes? (totally not a chance to showcase Grant Gustin's "I'm not Glee kid anymore!" physique)

Yeah.

Ultimates when, though? (I'd settle for a Blue Marvel movie and Monica on the Avengers.)

Can we all just appreciate how fantastic it is that the most powerful hero in the MCU is going to be a woman? It's honestly one of the best choices Marvel's made, and they've made a hell of a lot of good choices with the MCU.

Well, I'm assuming Vision should be pretty competitive, power level-wise.  Although we all know he's going to get jobbed once Thanos shows up.

Wanda's no slouch on the power level department either.  I don't feel the MCU is particularly lacking in strong female characters at any rate.  Although I do kinda wish Gamora was given more to work with in Guardians.  Didn't really do much to exemplify her top-assassin status.  Hopefully Vol. 2 gives her more to do.  Also how Nebula and Mantis factor in to the heirarchy.

Ehhn. I was hoping they'd draw on some of the older issues, or maybe the current run; to me, Carol's "defining trait" is her anger issues and violent tendencies. That was there in the KSD run, but not as much as I would've liked.

Still, I prrrrobably shouldn't be surprised. And at least she's got something relevant to her role - apparently Evangeline Lily was given The Irredeemable Ant-Man to read.

That's the biggest problem that I have with creating a "Captain Marvel" film starring Carol Danvers is that Carol - this Captain Marvel - is the sum of years of stories, many of which defining what she has finally become today. I don't know how you can specifically create a story that includes her history without it being the same convoluted mess that her history. That is, without it having the same basic plot as the Green Lantern film.

Edit: oops, Danvers not Ferris.

I'd be okay with short hair. It's professional, within regs for an Air Force officer, and long hair would be a liability in a close-quarters fight.

So apparently the screenwriter is concerned about some elements of the characters history... because "her origin story is similar to Green Lantern."

Alien comes to Earth, transfers power to a human, dies.*

Which is the only way you can really do Carol's classic origin unless you want to have Mar-Vell operating as Captain Marvel before Carol.

*I mean, TECHNICALLY Mar-Vell's powers weren't transferred to Carol, it was unrelated Kree DNA, but...

Its too bad there's not a concept of Kree DNA being in humans around the world introduced already that only takes the exposure to some sort of, I don't know, alien crystal to awaken said powers and could be used to introduce Carol here.  I mean that would take some sort of TV show about Agents of some sort of Shield on, I don't know, ABC or something.  It's too bad nothing like that exists in the MCU.

Ironbite-it's a pickle isn't it?

She's an air force pilot who gets her powers from an alien hero who later dies, leaving her to take up his name.

I mean, technically Mar-Vell didn't die until decades later, but you'd probably compress that for a movie.

I don't know...

Alien Policeman crashes on Earth. Chooses a test pilot to take over his job and special weapon. Test pilot goes into space and becomes space policeman/hero.

Vs

Alien invaders attack Earth. Air Force pilot trying to stop them gets caught in one of their machines exploding and comes out of it with genetically enhanced superpowers and kicks their butts.

I think it's pretty safely different.

-ZacWilliam, obviously you super downplay or leave out Mar-Vell all together as he's not pre-established in the MCU, but I don't see much similarity there.

You're looking for the differences, not the similarities, which I outlined.

It's enough that I imagine Marvel wants to make it more unique.  More specifically I think they want to avoid going through the beats of the Green Lantern movie from 2011.

The differences are her entire origin story, powers, and nature as a character.

The similarities are a few very tiny and easily left out superficial bits.

-ZacWilliam, you still have her entire original origin story if you leave every one of those "similarities" out

it's likely the simple justification for whatever changes they want to make.

Not that it's necessarily a good or a bad thing either way.

Marvel is making a movie called Captain Marvel  I can understand them wanting this to be something special.

Well, the writer of said movie disagrees with you apparently.

So do I, but my opinion matters less than the person actually scripting the movie.

You could pretty much exactly do the current version of her comic uniform and it wouldn't look out of place in MCU:

3047641-inline-s-3-first-look-at-the-new

The biggest question for me is going to be: "Where does the suit come from?" Is it something that she fashions, or is it somehow imbued upon her? If it's the latter, then it needs to look more alien, closer to something we'd see in Guardians than Avengers. Then again, a lot of Gunn's Gardians designs - specifically thinking of the Nova Corps - don't look very alien, so I don't know how you can show that.

Honestly? I'd be fine with her having been kidnapped by the ravagers ala Quill and given the powers before the movie started. We always have a precedent for alien abduction, might as well use it to save time.

It either that or *gasp* an agents of shield link where they find her in a Kree science lab.

It's a Newcomic (apparently)
