Announcement Regarding Threads Getting too P&Ry
#21

There are reasons why this has to be done. We don't typically give warnings for posters turning a topic P&Ry. It just hasn't been our practice largely for the reasons I touched on above. When a topic in General discussions turns P&Ry, we just move the thread to P&R. When a topic in TFD gets P&Ry, we say "I'm sure Roberts didn't mean it that way" and try to move on.
I can't move the Random Thoughts from out of Nowhere thread to P&R.
Hm. Maybe I've missed the "P&Ry" bits? I really haven't seen a thread get like that in a while. An example or two would really be nice, although I get why you wouldn't want to give any out. = /
Count yourself lucky if you haven't seen it. It's happened a few times recently. Like, any time I eat dinner or go to bed. >_< I would prefer not to dig them back up. Seeing them again is the opposite of what I want.

Okay, in all seriousness, I just hope you use a light touch, not every philosophical debate needs to be stifled. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, and please don't think I am. But from experience trying to force Mayhem into a mold can end badly. I still blame myself for killing the original RPG by trying to enforce rules so strictly within it.

What about other animals? There are certain species of wooly ungulates who have been criminally underrated by the general populace, I think. And while I cannot say for certain that these animals have plans to assert their dominance over the human race, I can assure you that if there were some sort of..."sheep uprising", then those who had shown those animals the proper amount of respect and recognition would be more likely to be spared a gruesome fate.

I do everything with a light touch. Maybe too light at times. I worry about that.
What I'm trying to do here is reinforce the boundaries while acknowledging the inherent fuzziness of those boundaries. A hard ban of P&R is not possible or useful. Conversations are going to steer that way and it won't be anyone's fault. The normal enforcement tools aren't appropriate. But we do have an interest in keeping things under control. P&R has a unique ability to create tension that we do not want in Mayhem. If we could talk P&R in here without any tension, I'd be all for it. But I don't see how to achieve that.
I'm reminded of something a high school teacher of mine once did. Some students in my class were complaining about some teacher who was apparently a nightmare. Our teacher said he couldn't allow them to badmouth their other teachers. The students negotiated. They reached an agreement. They could complain about any teacher they wanted, but had to refer to that teacher as "M. X". They tried "Mr. X" and "Mrs. X" but that was deemed to still be too specific. So students would complain about "M.X". If they were complaining about two teachers, they'd complain about "M. X" and "M. X". It was confusing but it worked.
Do you guys think you could handle something like the "M. X" standard?

I think both P and R are silly wastes of time...

I'm not sure the "Mr. X" thing would work here. Like if I were complaining about a politician, even if I didn't refer to them by name, if I happen to mention some of their defining physical/political features, we'd have a pretty good idea of who I'm complaining about.
It's also kinda insulting. I'm not fond of pretense and double speak. Either we talk openly or just don't bring it up.

I'm with the Doctor on that.
Ironbite-seems silly to limit ourselves in such a way we resemble 1984

We can't even handle talking about children's toys
This is why I worry. I worry that if we talk P&R in here it's going to be like playing hot potato with a stick of dynamite.
But like I said, a hard ban isn't really enforceable and this isn't an announcement of one. If you guys want to play with dynamite, go ahead. I have no intention of stopping you. Just take note that if I see the fuse get lit I'm going to snip it immediately.

Egregious posts will receive warnings.

D&D has to report to shareholders. Pathfinder only has to impress its neckbeards.

You gotta know that's just a required clause he's gotta put in. If he goes and says no one's getting warnings, everyone's going to jump on it~
Tired of this forum shitting on me.

Mayhem? For talking about that sort of thing, but posts that make fun of/bait/attack other posters or their beliefs being edited/removed. It'll take a lot of trust in us Mayhemers to keep it civil, it'll require a lot of monitoring, and I imagine that there'll still be light P&R talk elsewhere, but it would be nice to have a spot to talk about these things with Mayhemers without worrying about repercussions TOO much.

That sounds like a thread I'd need to leave open 24/7 and refresh every minute.
So... maybe?

Like, trusting each other aside, most P&R discussions even outside of here and on other places just seem to result in hurt feelings all around, even if that wasn't the intent. Also I'd rather not force Fnu to actually have to monitor that thread 24/7.

We can't even mention TFWiki in here without feelings getting hurt. If we get openly P&R in here I fear I may never sleep again.
