@  ZakuConvoy : (20 January 2019 - 07:42 PM)

His one shots and two or three parters are great. But...Dark Age got a little long in the tooth. Not bad, but not my favorite.

@  ZakuConvoy : (20 January 2019 - 07:40 PM)

For me, it's less the delay, and more that Astro City is always best in smaller chunks. The longer story arcs (which is what the OGNs sound like they're aiming for), while not bad, are far from the high points of the series.

@  Nevermore : (20 January 2019 - 07:52 AM)

The recent ongoing series didn't start until what, 2013?

@  Nevermore : (20 January 2019 - 07:51 AM)

Then was continued as a five-issue mini-series ("Local Heroes"), then came a 16-issue maxi-series ("The Dark Age"), plus a couple of standalone specials and two-parters...

@  Nevermore : (20 January 2019 - 07:50 AM)

It started out as a series, but due to Busiek's health problems (?), it was put on hold after six issues, then got relaunched with a new #1, had several delays (again because of Busiek's health issues), was discontinued after #22...

@  Nevermore : (20 January 2019 - 07:49 AM)

I don't get why people are making such a big deal out of Astro City becoming a series of graphic novels now. I mean, it's not like it's always been a steady ongoing series.

@  Nevermore : (17 January 2019 - 08:19 PM)

I'm also only reading the trades. So I'm still missing... two volumes that are currently only available as hardcovers? Three?

@  Trpodeca : (17 January 2019 - 06:22 PM)

Astro City is great. Since I only read the trades, there probably won't be a big change for me.

@  ZakuConvoy : (17 January 2019 - 05:34 PM)

I have. Great series. Hopefully the transition to OGNs will be a smooth one.

@  Nevermore : (17 January 2019 - 07:20 AM)

@  Steevy Maximus : (16 January 2019 - 10:47 AM)

That said, the old "Nester" character from Nintendo Power IS owned by Nintendo, and I could see a homage in there

@  Steevy Maximus : (16 January 2019 - 10:46 AM)

Because technically DiC created the character, Nintendo does not own him.

@  Paladin : (16 January 2019 - 10:28 AM)

sidebar- why is "Captain N" not in Smash yet? that seems like such an easy option.

@  wonko the sane? : (16 January 2019 - 09:18 AM)

The 90's mario cartoons had exactly three character aspects to work with: fat, italian and plumber. He wasn't exactly wrenching pipes in every episode, so they had to do something...

@  Sabrblade : (15 January 2019 - 10:35 PM)

There's always the three Mario cartoons DiC made back in the 80s.

@  wonko the sane? : (15 January 2019 - 09:48 PM)

So they could make a show that everyone would scream was an adventure time knockoff? I get what you're saying, but I can't see it being well received.

@  Sean Whitmore : (15 January 2019 - 08:47 PM)

The fact that Adventure Time was on the air for 8 years and at no point did Nintendo hand the creators a large sack of money and say, "Please make a Mario thing for us" will forever anger me.

@  wonko the sane? : (15 January 2019 - 07:03 PM)

There was so much awesome put into design and conception of the super mario bros. movie, and it didn't even need the branding: but it wouldn't have made it to the screen without the branding.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 January 2019 - 06:56 PM)

Many aspects of it have stuck in my memory, though. The boots, the devolution ray, the aesthetic of the dinosaur city

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 January 2019 - 06:55 PM)

I had no idea there was another Mario Bros. movie coming out, though. Doubt it'll top the first one, it was just so bizarre

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 January 2019 - 06:55 PM)

They already act a bit like minions; they just aren't stupid

@  wonko the sane? : (15 January 2019 - 05:35 PM)

The trouble is: I honestly can't decide if making them minions would be better or worse than the continuously shrill voices they've used for the last 20 years.

@  Paladin : (15 January 2019 - 05:27 PM)

hope everyone's ready for Toads to look, act & sound like the Minions forever...

@  Lancer : (15 January 2019 - 04:54 PM)

I mean, considering Illumination is making the new Mario movie, Super Mario Bros. 1993 won't be the worst Mario movie anymore

@  Sabrblade : (15 January 2019 - 04:36 PM)

"Sir, your pizza's here." "Not now!"

@  wonko the sane? : (15 January 2019 - 04:28 PM)

Actually, yeah. I think I need to watch it again. Great movie.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (15 January 2019 - 03:44 PM)

It's a fun movie with amazing sets. As long as you don't try to connect it to anything else Mario, it's fine.

@  TM2-Megatron : (15 January 2019 - 03:38 PM)

Damn, I haven't thought about the Super Mario Bros. feature film in forever. Need to watch it again, soon; I can only imagine it gets better with time.

@  wonko the sane? : (15 January 2019 - 12:28 PM)

I went and looked up the term "isekai"... that's not actually as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Until the ending. I love the series until the last 15 minutes. Using tags even though I'm not naming names or specifics. Once you watch it you'll know what I'm talking about.

I watched the first three eps so far before heading to work, I'll watch more shortly but I liked the Lance & Allura in the park scene, that was a lovely scene and definely a highlight for me, the second ep answered roughly when Lotor was born and really paints him as someone who been out to try and please his father, yet at every turn he is rejected and shuned by him, Haggar excuse for neglecting her son is more excusable, as the show made it clear she lost her memories and idenity as Honerva for ten thousand years but then the Quintessence field changed Zarkon from a man who cared deeply about his wife and less about conquering the universe to someone who obessed with the Black Lion and causing havoc!

I've now watched all of the eps, for the most part, I found the series enjoyable, I think my favourte ep is the one with the home video feel, it was a laugh. The ending, it felt kind of rushed a bit, I think it would of been better if they given the show a extra ep to tie up loose ends, it kind felt like a good chunk of the cast were simply discarded towards the end and not given desent send offs. Exactly what became of the Space Mice, Keith's pet cosmic Wolf pretty much disappeared for most of the series, I also want to know who is now the leader of the Gulra in the wake of Honerva's actions.

For the most part, I quite like Legendary Defender, it rocks, I hope they come up with a sequel at some point

Spoiler

This series was the Voltron series that was really needed to truly revive the show, the Voltron Force show, while ok, it really felt like a sequel to the original instead of a reboot in a time when reboots were a fashion, what Legendary Defender did was take ideas from the past stuff and create something new and fresh while respecting the original show.

I think my favourte scene overall in the series is when Keith is in the Black Lion racing to reunite with the others who are getting beaten up by Lotor's mech and him reaching deep and unlocking the Black Lion's teleport/super, super, super speed power and it was the moment the two came face to face, while my second favourte, got to be when battling the unknown Robeast (at the time) on Earth, that was a pretty intense battle. My third favourte scene, got to be in the latest season, with Allura & Lance in the park, it was a lovely scene.

Just finished the series.  Loved what Dr. Hoyt was working on and little teasers that we got of his project.  Maybe that will be the next Voltron series.  I dont see this just fading away and that being the end of Voltron.

Honestly, I'd be okay with this being the end for this particular iteration of the franchise. The conclusion was satisfying, if horribly bittersweet, and any continuation for this storyline would cheapen it.

The last 1/4 of the series felt like it was spending a lot of time setting up the new pilots, who I'm certain would be the core cast of a hypothetical Vehicle Voltron sequel, and I'm curious if that was a deliberate 'backdoor pilot' or not. I could see Pidge taking over Coran's role and then otherwise relegating the rest of the main cast to cameos.

I said it on Twitter too, but for a series that knew it had 78 episodes, it really spend a lot of time messing around, setting up and dropping plots, even towards the very end, even if you ignore the 'hope we get a spinoff' stuff.

Overall, I think the show started off great with a tight and compelling 26 episodes, but never really achieved that level of consistency again. The middle 26 in particular were a lot of a mess, especially being released as 'seasons' of half a dozen episodes each, but even the home stretch were too unfocused.

Animation on the whole was awesome - there's going to be a lot of very experienced energy effect animators looking for work now - even if we could have done with a new combining sequence every now and again. Individual character animation was awesome, as was the acting. There probably weren't any episodes that were outright bad. Maybe one too many 'inspirational' speeches by the end.

Overall, I really liked it. Not quite loved, but if they ever do a DVD set, I'll happily buy it.

I gotta say, i am kinda disappointed the 'Mirror Universe' Altaens and Evil Alura didn't came back to play a part in the series. With Honerva jumping through timelines plan, i thought they would join forces. Or at least, Honerva manipulating them too.

Thought it was a good ending, and this was the best Voltron series by far. My biggest quibble is probably that it's a little hard to keep track of all the side characters, so I find myself thinking, "We've meet him before? She's still alive? Where did this person go?" But they do a good enough job explaining things so you can follow the current episode, and I'm sure this won't be so much of a problem when I do an uninterrupted rewatch later on.

I can't relate to the complaints and Shiro and Allura/Lance at all because of how clearly disinterested the show is in romance in general. I was absolutely certain Keith and Acxa were being set up and I'm not sure they even interact in this batch beyond being present at the same battle. I was almost as certain about Hunk and Shay, and the closest thing to confirmation with them is Shay being part of the team of chefs, so you might as well claim that Hunk ended up with Romelle or Vrepit Sal.

One of the specific complaints about Shiro in the last batch was that he would *clearly* be the only main character to 'not find love'. The show contains nothing about the romantic lives of Keith, Hunk, Pidge, and Coran, over half the main cast, beyond Hunk insisting he and Shay are just friends and Pidge making heart-eyes at the box on wheels robot. Most of the romantic pairings we actually see are the biological parents of the various main characters, which is kind of something you would assume had to happen. The Holts and Lotor's generals are basically the only couples who are still together at the end where both members actually have personalities.

Bringing us to Lance and Allura. People complain that it 'came out of nowhere', but honestly, the idea that they were friends for 60 episodes who hooked up after one of them had a bad break up felt more realistic than the standard action/adventure tropes of the people who openly and aggressively hate each other and/or have only known each other for a few hours being the 'one true pairing'.

Now, the complaint that really bugged the hell out of me, not knowing who all the 'unmemorable' returning characters were. That was really one of my favorite things about this batch, all the old characters turning up made it really feel like a proper grand finale. Slav, the warden and his Yupper, the Clear Day aliens, etc. I'm not knocking a show because someone else couldn't remember stuff. It especially bugged me because I saw it from someone who was super vocal about how they should've released the show in 26 episode chunks. Binging stuff makes it even harder for me to retain details and those being his two specific complaints was just weirdly hypocritical.

I thought things were pretty damn solid from the halfway point of the last batch onward, getting to Earth and reintroducing the Galaxy Garrison really reinvigorated things, and Honerva's whole deal felt very Xenogears, which always wins points from me.

My biggest issue with the Shiro situation is the fact they felt the need to animate his ending, while all the other Paladins got a static image with their blurb. Why not just do like the others and just leave it static with just what it showed. But nope gotta push peoples buttons.
