@  Nevermore : (17 May 2021 - 05:15 AM)

So, then, isn't redecoing or retooling an existing toy also "fixing" someone else's art?

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 10:07 PM)

A toy is not on the same level as a piece of drawn art, true, but it is 100% an entertainment product.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 05:05 PM)

A toy is an object of utility, Comparing that to a piece of drawn art is grossly ignoring the difference between the two. Also, you didn't answer my questions. Try again.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:25 PM)

Part of the difference is that those covers are primarily one person's art. Sure, you probably have an inker and a colorist, but the lines and composition are one person. A toy however is a team design at pretty much all levels.

@  Cyoti : (16 May 2021 - 03:52 PM)

toymaking is a collaborative process, you have to make compromises and factories are going to get things wrong

@  tigerhawk : (16 May 2021 - 03:43 PM)

Earthrise had a few holes, Runamuck's legs YIKES!

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 03:37 PM)

I doubt that say, the designer for Kingdom Cheetor was happy about every bit of unpainted plastic on it.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:28 PM)

J Scott Campbell recently had his Spiderman cover "fixed" by someone online. A few weeks ago, someone on twitter "fixed" someone's Sonic the Hedgehog fan art where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were drawn as humans. Both times and other times, the "fixer" gets called out and criticised as you shouldn't go around "fixing" someone else's art because its rude and disrespectful to the original artist. And I was thinking isn't "fixed your s*** for ya" exactly what toy customisers do?

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

Have you ever changed your car in any way whatsoever compared to the factory configuration, or are you leaving the designer's art unchanged in that case as well?

@  CORVUS : (16 May 2021 - 02:28 PM)

It's best not to ponder it too hard.

@  Nevermore : (16 May 2021 - 04:16 AM)

Bass X0, I really wonder sometimes how you come up with these random tangents apropos of nothing.

@  PlutoniumBoss : (16 May 2021 - 04:11 AM)

It's collaborative art.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 May 2021 - 04:07 AM)

Toys are subject to budget constraints, so its not like customizing would ruin the designer's vision or whatever.

@  Bass X0 : (16 May 2021 - 03:38 AM)

Isn't customising a toy just "fixing other people's art"?

The 1988 G1 line up could all have been done as Titan Master things, I figure the Pretenders could be done as Titan Master Drones and Prime Master shells.

@  Cyoti : (08 May 2021 - 11:14 AM)

Perfect is the enemy of the good. And it's still better than making him a remold of RTS Jazz as planned originally. Fact of the matter is: Nightbeat is just not a priority with Hasbro.

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:58 AM)

Generations Nightbeat never really scratched that itch sadly; he looked okay, but his transformation was fiddly, his robot mode had far too many bits and pieces flopping around unsecured, and his chest dragged along the surface in var mode. =/

@  Demovere Xeno : (08 May 2021 - 08:57 AM)

I second wishing that we got a Deluxe Nightbeat from TR, mostly because as a kid he was second-in-command to my old Powermaster Optimus for the longest time. =P

If you really like the deco and the character, then yes, you should look forward to getting her regardless of what other people's opinions on the toy might be.

Oh, Tracks. Dear, sweet Tracks. You tried so hard

He certainly looks like Tracks...for the most part. As has been mentioned, the wings are far too big, and the missile launchers are really tiny. The launchers also have a ton of joints and the whole thing feels needlessly complex. I'm not really sure how they're "supposed" to be.

That's actually a good theme for transforming Tracks: "I guess this is right...maybe?"

The whole backpack situation is that way. It's pretty hard to get the wings into a position that looks right. They don't really lock in anywhere. They float behind the shoulders, and don't really line up with them in a satisfying way. The wings have little notches in them that I presume are there to allow the shoulders to rotate without colliding into the wings, but that only really works in certain positions. Basically, the whole backpack/wings/missile launcher assembly is just fiddling with it until you're satisfied with it. Except you'll never be satisfied, and will end up saying "Well, that seems to look alright."

The helmet looks good, but that face sculpt is terrible compared to the bar set by previous Masterpieces. Tracks should not be the ugliest Autobot, yet here we are. The panel the head is on is also confusing. Set evenly with the rest of the chest, it has a tendency to fall backwards when you move the head. You can click the panel forward, but it doesn't actually click into a stopping point. It feels more like forcing the joint past where it should be. It improves the neck, but are you supposed to do it? Who knows. I sure don't.

The arms aren't great, and he's got surprisingly limited elbow movement. Not every car has had double jointed elbows, but Tracks' feels particularly restricted. The lower leg transformation is fine I guess, but again, feels needlessly complex. I don't really love the flat panel that folds over his shins just for the sake of giving him his cartoon detail.

Seems like they could have taken more direct inspiration from the simple transformation of the G1 toy. It would have been better for it.

I'm kind of at a loss on the neck panel thing.  It seems bizarre that it would just hover there, but I'm not sure it's meant to be popped forward either.

I find myself sort of mentally comparing this with Sideswipe, who does a lot of the same moves Tracks does, but better, which is weird considering Sideswipe is like two years old at this point.  I'm really starting to miss Shogo Hasui, since as time goes on with Kobayashi on these, you slowly remember, "Oh, right, he's the guy that designed MP Rodimus Prime.  And RotF Mixmaster.  And CR Speedbreaker/RiD Sideburn."

The neck panel is so weird. I'm almost positive it's been popped forward in some of Takara's photography though, given how the head is angled in some of their poses.

Also, it allows him to look forward while keeping the back arched a bit with that otherwise meaningless stomach joint, so...I kinda feel like maybe you're supposed to pop it forward, even though doing so feels wrong...?

One thing that slightly helps, is to keep the backpack at a slight angle away from the main body. In the instructions there's a side view of Tracks that shows how he's supposed to be.

But yeah, I miss Hasui. I hope Takara does some sort of self correction in its Masterpiece department, to better match his style (either that or Hasui comes back).

The backpack actually has slots that it clips into to lock it in place, so I'm not sure what you mean by "keep the backpack at a slight angle away from the main body."

I get the feeling the accelerated MP schedule hurts a lot, since I've felt that everything since and including Bumblebee needed to "cook" a bit longer and get some revisions to streamline some of the engineering and get the sculpting back up to par.

Not sure about your Tracks, but on mine the slots that hold the backpack are loose & you can't see how the pegs are in place. I had to look at the color photo which shows Tracks correct side profile. (Picture of Tracks Front-Side-Back profiles)

Where the inner arm assembly exactly fits matter. I mistranformed him once, & was really having issue with how his arms bumped into his wings. Then I referred to the poor & corrected my error.

Tracks is the weakest MP since the soft-reboot, but he's still pretty great. The car mode looks excellent, and the robot mode from the front looks good. I love the little hand transformation for something different, and the legs I find fun too.

Biggest complaints, like others have said, are the tiny over-complex missiles (would have been content with just detachable missiles that could store on the car mode somewhere), and the whole backpack situation (looks better if you ignore snapping it into place, and just let it sit lower).

Not really compromises I want to make with something labeled "Masterpiece", but I still find Tracks good overall. The next few releases (except Shockwave, who I think doesn't fit the established aesthetic and I prefer Quakewave at least compared to the pictures, but still looks really nice) really look to veering down a bad path.

I should make it clear I don't think Tracks is bad. He's still a good Transformer, but he's definitely the worst in his class. The Masterpiece series has some of the best TFs ever, which is why I'm so specific about my criticisms. I have a high bar for Masterpieces, and I analyze and critique them far more than a normal release. He's definitely disappointing, but that's compared to other MPs, not other TFs in general.

The backpack on mine clicks in place solidly, so I suspect you might misaligning something.

I did get mine from Action Robo, which is Hasbro Asia because he comes with a coin. So maybe mine is produced at a different factory?

I've look & the tab holes on mine are just a tiny bit bigger than the tabs on the backpack. Which allows for very minor misalignment if the backpack's arm isn't in the correct position.

I feel like the neck joint thing has two positions: clicked all the way allows him to look down really well, but looks off facing forward (the neck is too long). It feels a bit too far back in the other position, though..

I feel like his shin covers and/or hood will eventually snap off if I'm not careful posing the legs...
