hmm. I got curious what CW actually stood for.
The "CW" name is derived from the first letters of the names of these corporations (CBS and Warner Bros.).
Yeah - UPN and the WB Network both did so poorly in the ratings that even with
breakout shows like "Dawson's Creek" and WWE wrestling they weren't viable as independent entities. The only way for them to survive was to merge their remaining assets and go from there.
Hilariously enough, the head honchos weren't the first people to have that idea. Both networks offered so little in the way of overall network-level programming that KAKW (Bryan / College Station metropolitan area, Texas) was actually affiliated with both
stations until it got bought out by Univision. UPN's Saturday morning line-up was broadcast on Sunday
mornings, and one set of evening programming was tape-delayed two hours so it could air after the other set. Even then, the station had to use a lot
of syndicated programming and "classic" television as filler.
