just be happy your walmart even stocks voyagers. mine doesnt

@  Steevy Maximus : (19 January 2020 - 08:53 PM)

Figures that Walmart finally restocks Studio Voyagers...with Wave ONE

@  ThunderWear : (19 January 2020 - 09:27 AM)

I snagged Rainmakers for half off.  They make me want jolly ranchers.

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 04:21 PM)

I was using my account on another comptuer, and oddly it seemed to default to $US rather than converting it.

@  TM2-Megatron : (18 January 2020 - 02:02 PM)

You should be able to set eBay to display in your local currency, although personally I like to know the actual currency the item is listed in so I know if I need to account for forex fees or not

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:34 AM)

I'd also like to take the opportunity to say I despise Ebay for showing the list prices in US money.

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:23 AM)

Well there is an overpriced limited edition, but I don't want to pay that much money for it.

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:21 AM)

Well great. The one Usagi Yojimbo volume I don't have and it's out of stock.

@  Rycochet : (17 January 2020 - 06:15 PM)

I both love and hate that the Alien franchise seems to have had more luck finding a niche as a line of children's toys than it has at producing worthwhile films.

@  Donocropolis : (17 January 2020 - 06:35 AM)

I've seen them on the shelves at Walmart. They're pretty great looking retro Aliens toys. https://www.walmart....-Vary/934039489

@  fourteenwings : (17 January 2020 - 01:11 AM)

IIRC somebody on here mentioned an unbranded Alien toy a couple of weeks ago? It seems like it was actually part of a collection for the Alien movie series by Lanard. Mattel's making some stuff too.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 January 2020 - 03:12 PM)

Is it really a worse name than say, HMS Spanker?

@  Maximus Ambus : (16 January 2020 - 02:36 PM)

'Boaty McBoatface' was a actual thing?! Wow.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (14 January 2020 - 02:00 PM)

Might be worth bringing back this thread.

@  ThunderWear : (14 January 2020 - 01:53 PM)

Of course I had the idea to download all the pdfs like a week too late. Anyone got an archive?

@  Steevy Maximus : (14 January 2020 - 12:48 PM)

The Collector Club is dead. Seems like it all came down shortly after New Year

@  ThunderWear : (13 January 2020 - 11:06 PM)

I can't get to the collector club website. anyone else? I was literally going to download all the fiction to finish reading.

@  Maximus Ambus : (13 January 2020 - 04:50 AM)

News today is all 'there's a CHANCE it would snow in July' and 'dogs COULD bite back'.

@  Benbot : (12 January 2020 - 10:05 PM)

Holy crap, do many people get hurt by them?

@  wonko the sane? : (12 January 2020 - 02:11 PM)

Even in fallout, they never carpet bombed with nukes.

@  Maximus Ambus : (12 January 2020 - 12:43 PM)

I hope the stockpiled nuclear weapons of the US and Russia are accounted for then.

@  Nevermore : (12 January 2020 - 12:22 PM)

Geez. 1760 (!) bombs from World War II that had not detonated and were still armed have been found. That's only the numbers for the federal state of Germany I live in, and only for the first three quarters of 2019. For all of 2018, the total number was 2811 (!!) bombs.

@  CVReynolds : (11 January 2020 - 11:05 PM)

I've been wanting a Tarantulas that turns into a more realistic tarantula for a long time. Maybe Takara will someday do a Masterpiece, which would be neat. But I really want to see a modernized look like in the IDW comics.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (11 January 2020 - 09:43 PM)

We need more Waspinators.. and rattraps.

@  Ashley : (11 January 2020 - 07:09 PM)

I'm on board with that

@  Dekafox : (11 January 2020 - 06:17 PM)

What I'm hearing is we need Cyberverse Waspinator

@  NotVeryKnightly : (10 January 2020 - 01:27 AM)

He's appeared across more branding changes than Waspinator, so maybe it's more the other way around.

@  Ashley : (10 January 2020 - 12:01 AM)

is C3PO the Waspinator of Star Wars? he'll live forever, because it's funny for him to suffer

@  Sabrblade : (09 January 2020 - 11:52 PM)

He's still waiting for them to be funny.

@  ▲ndrusi : (09 January 2020 - 10:35 PM)

Why?

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 04:02 PM)

I've been watching South Park, Family Guy and The Simpsons with a straight face for a decade now.

@  wonko the sane? : (09 January 2020 - 03:18 PM)

If that's what it takes to get you to take the medication, sure.

@  Bass X0 : (09 January 2020 - 01:52 PM)

If I go crazy, will you still call me Superman?

@  fourteenwings : (09 January 2020 - 11:37 AM)

I mean, it is easier to protect HDDs, and you can retransfer the data over and over forever?

@  NotVeryKnightly : (09 January 2020 - 10:45 AM)

Not in this comparison. He's making his own files, so they're (presumably) not restricted by DRM, so he can copy them as many times as he wants. It's potentially more reliable in the long term than hoping the specific copies you originally bought never accrue any damage for the rest of your life.

@  Echowarrior : (09 January 2020 - 10:44 AM)

I prefer physical copies too. Easier to protect something physical and tangible.

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 09:55 AM)

I prefer having physical copies.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (09 January 2020 - 08:56 AM)

I have plenty of physical media I turn into digital media for my plex server. Just finished ripping Ultra Seven

@  fourteenwings : (09 January 2020 - 08:50 AM)

Isn't the general consensus that we're supposed to be over physical media anyways?

@  Paladin : (09 January 2020 - 08:17 AM)

i still don't own a Blu-Ray player.

@  TheMightyMol... : (09 January 2020 - 07:35 AM)

My current TV works just fine. I don't see a need to upgrade. And by the time I do, the Next Big Thing will probably be out anyway.

@  Benbot : (09 January 2020 - 03:58 AM)

Me neither. I'm no rebel, though. I'm just poor.

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 03:38 AM)

I haven't gone 4K yet, I'm a rebel.

@  Ashley : (07 January 2020 - 11:50 PM)

the comic theme is amazing

@  Bass X0 : (07 January 2020 - 03:18 PM)

Sounds like Victor Caroli but I’m not sure.

@  Bass X0 : (07 January 2020 - 02:35 PM)

Should I recognise the narrator of the Mutant Hunt trailer?

@  Maximus Ambus : (07 January 2020 - 04:30 AM)

I got me Titans Return Blaster, now watch them unveil Earthrise Blaster and Generations Perceptor, a retool of Titans Blaster.

@  ThunderWear : (06 January 2020 - 10:22 PM)

I recently switched to to the comic theme here at the Allspark and I'm so happy I just want to look at it.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (06 January 2020 - 08:12 AM)

Can you not take so many lines to say anything?

@  fourteenwings : (06 January 2020 - 07:47 AM)

Iunno, maybe people having unique pronunciations of things re:how they understand language makes the world a more colourful place, rather than one where we correct every seemingly grievous error?

I'm looking for a cheap as hug laptop to experiment with Linux on, but so far my only candidate is a ThinkPad R61 with a shitty Celeron CPU.

You'd be getting a pretty authentic experience - ThinkPad users and Linux users tend to overlap pretty considerably. Two gigs of RAM and a celeron processor means you probably wouldn't want to be running a full modern desktop, but there's XFCE. Is it the 1.86Ghz version? It's at least 64 bit, so that's good. (A lot of third party apps don't support 32 bit Linux anymore.) Pity it's single core and not the Core Duo version, threading makes so many things friendlier....

It actually only has 512MB of RAM right now...it was an education spec machine shipped with XP instead of Vista.

I could upgrade the CPU to a Merom Core2 Duo and pick up a lot of performance and upgrade the RAM to 4GB but I've got other machines that need the time and cash investment more right now.

I'd make that my recommendation when you can spare it then. I won't say it's going to be the best possible Linux experience, and you could get more of a sense of the OS from a dual boot, live USB boot, or even a VM on your main machine, but it'd be an authentic piece for your collection. Because developers love Linux and ThinkPads.

When System76 recently announced they were going to be designing their own laptops for Ubuntu instead of rebranding grey boxes from China, one of the first responses I saw on Reddit was people asking for a clit mouse. Even called it a TrackPoint™.

Heh, this R61 is so cheap it doesn't even have a trackpad! It's a retro ThinkPad without the retro!

TrackPoint.

Surely you must have one or the other. The TrackPoint is certainly the retro one. All ThinkPads of that era have them, including the R61.

The people who still insist on the existence of TrackPoint™-brand clit mice claim that they're developer-friendly because they allow you to use the mouse without moving your fingers off home row. That means that for a workflow that involves a lot of typing, but also a lot of moving around documents, selecting, and switching views or windows, they're a nice compromise, basically the worst pointing device but also requiring the least break in keyboard use to use.

I notice that text documents and big, friendly touchpads go together well as long as the touchpad has decent palm rejection, where a mouse tends to be more convenient for a lot of other tasks, so I can sort of understand the logic.

But there's no denying the authenticity.

I honestly don't consider any ThinkPad made from the debut of the various letter series to be retro, though. To me retro ThinkPads are all the 300 series, 500 series, 600 series, 700 series, etc.

Ah, gotcha. "Retro Thinkpad" doesn't stop with the jump to Lenovo or anything to me, since there's a consistency in design there - especially since there's been a much bigger shift this decade, trying to compromise between the ThinkPad design philosophy and modern ultrabook styles and priorities, so "retro" really just makes me think anything before that. (Including machines still in active use now, which I know is a contradiction.)

Edit: For full authenticity, it occurs to me that you'd want to install something with SELinux, or at least enable full disk encryption on install.

IBM switched from 3 digit model codes to letters in the early 2000s, so A/X/T and maybe R predate the Lenovo buyout.

Yeah, I'm seeing that, although Lenovo inherited the model letters, too. So there are IBM ThinkPad Rs, despite the fact that R61 and others are Lenovo.

ThinkPad is a venerable series of workhorse laptops started by IBM in the early 1990s. In 2005, they sold the brand off to Lenovo as IBM moved deeper into the "enterprise solutions" market and stopped making PCs of any kind. While there have been some gradual, iterative updates along the way, Lenovo has kept up the brand's priorities and aesthetics until very recently; big, ugly, chunky black boxes that appear to be designed for the rigors of the world of Fallout.

The red dot in the middle of the keyboard is called a TrackPoint™, or a clit mouse when it's on a non-Lenovo-or-IBM-branded device. It's basically a stiff joystick for either thumb that combines with the mouse buttons in the keyboard (the red bars at the edge of the case on the very old one pictured) to provide a rudimentary mouse. Later ThinkPads supplemented this with a trackpad / touchpad below the space bar and moved the TrackPoint™'s buttons further up, but the TrackPoint™ stayed as a recognizable icon of the ThinkPad brand.

There was a recent design refresh that introduced a slimmer profile, sloped for sliding into bags and cases, a much larger touchpad, and island-style keys (flat keys that have their own individual cutouts on the keyboard frame, something I think Apple originally introduced a decade or two ago, instead of sloped-edged keys that fit together with no space in between) like a more modern laptop. They're still designed with more power and less battery life than most everyday users want and still keep the TrackPoint™,

jd24rNh.png

There's a significant overlap between ThinkPad users and Linux users, partly because they've both traditionally done well with people working in IT. There's also IBM's history with Linux, etc.

Also, because both groups of users contain a large proportion of people who are a particular kind of fussy.

Edit: Oh, and "retro", as always, means a somewhat different think for Eva than it does for me, since Eva collects genuinely retro hardware.

I guess I'm fighting against the modern laptop too, as I think anything thinner than my recently acquired 2009 unibody white MacBook is needlessly thin.

I like thin, definitely. I think about 1.5-2 cm on the thick (hinge) end is ideal to me? I like being able to throw a laptop in my bag and not think about the space it's taking. And I do appreciate island keys and all-day batteries. But I also would prefer not to go over an 11.6" screen for a laptop, so. If you're talking a full-size 15" or something laptop, which I'd have no use for in the first place, I don't honestly see much benefit in going super-thin with them.

I hate the new MacBook Pro's keyboard and lack of ports and would rather have a thicker laptop with a much less shallow keyboard and more ports.

I like Mac OS but I honestly feel like I'd be better off Hackintoshing at this point...
