@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 04:21 PM)

I was using my account on another comptuer, and oddly it seemed to default to $US rather than converting it.

@  TM2-Megatron : (18 January 2020 - 02:02 PM)

You should be able to set eBay to display in your local currency, although personally I like to know the actual currency the item is listed in so I know if I need to account for forex fees or not

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:34 AM)

I'd also like to take the opportunity to say I despise Ebay for showing the list prices in US money.

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:23 AM)

Well there is an overpriced limited edition, but I don't want to pay that much money for it.

@  Trpodeca : (18 January 2020 - 06:21 AM)

Well great. The one Usagi Yojimbo volume I don't have and it's out of stock.

@  Rycochet : (17 January 2020 - 06:15 PM)

I both love and hate that the Alien franchise seems to have had more luck finding a niche as a line of children's toys than it has at producing worthwhile films.

@  Donocropolis : (17 January 2020 - 06:35 AM)

I've seen them on the shelves at Walmart. They're pretty great looking retro Aliens toys. https://www.walmart....-Vary/934039489

@  fourteenwings : (17 January 2020 - 01:11 AM)

IIRC somebody on here mentioned an unbranded Alien toy a couple of weeks ago? It seems like it was actually part of a collection for the Alien movie series by Lanard. Mattel's making some stuff too.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 January 2020 - 03:12 PM)

Is it really a worse name than say, HMS Spanker?

@  Maximus Ambus : (16 January 2020 - 02:36 PM)

'Boaty McBoatface' was a actual thing?! Wow.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (14 January 2020 - 02:00 PM)

Might be worth bringing back this thread.

@  ThunderWear : (14 January 2020 - 01:53 PM)

Of course I had the idea to download all the pdfs like a week too late. Anyone got an archive?

@  Steevy Maximus : (14 January 2020 - 12:48 PM)

The Collector Club is dead. Seems like it all came down shortly after New Year

@  ThunderWear : (13 January 2020 - 11:06 PM)

I can't get to the collector club website. anyone else? I was literally going to download all the fiction to finish reading.

@  Maximus Ambus : (13 January 2020 - 04:50 AM)

News today is all 'there's a CHANCE it would snow in July' and 'dogs COULD bite back'.

@  Benbot : (12 January 2020 - 10:05 PM)

Holy crap, do many people get hurt by them?

@  wonko the sane? : (12 January 2020 - 02:11 PM)

Even in fallout, they never carpet bombed with nukes.

@  Maximus Ambus : (12 January 2020 - 12:43 PM)

I hope the stockpiled nuclear weapons of the US and Russia are accounted for then.

@  Nevermore : (12 January 2020 - 12:22 PM)

Geez. 1760 (!) bombs from World War II that had not detonated and were still armed have been found. That's only the numbers for the federal state of Germany I live in, and only for the first three quarters of 2019. For all of 2018, the total number was 2811 (!!) bombs.

@  CVReynolds : (11 January 2020 - 11:05 PM)

I've been wanting a Tarantulas that turns into a more realistic tarantula for a long time. Maybe Takara will someday do a Masterpiece, which would be neat. But I really want to see a modernized look like in the IDW comics.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (11 January 2020 - 09:43 PM)

We need more Waspinators.. and rattraps.

@  Ashley : (11 January 2020 - 07:09 PM)

I'm on board with that

@  Dekafox : (11 January 2020 - 06:17 PM)

What I'm hearing is we need Cyberverse Waspinator

@  NotVeryKnightly : (10 January 2020 - 01:27 AM)

He's appeared across more branding changes than Waspinator, so maybe it's more the other way around.

@  Ashley : (10 January 2020 - 12:01 AM)

is C3PO the Waspinator of Star Wars? he'll live forever, because it's funny for him to suffer

@  Sabrblade : (09 January 2020 - 11:52 PM)

He's still waiting for them to be funny.

@  ▲ndrusi : (09 January 2020 - 10:35 PM)

Why?

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 04:02 PM)

I've been watching South Park, Family Guy and The Simpsons with a straight face for a decade now.

@  wonko the sane? : (09 January 2020 - 03:18 PM)

If that's what it takes to get you to take the medication, sure.

@  Bass X0 : (09 January 2020 - 01:52 PM)

If I go crazy, will you still call me Superman?

@  fourteenwings : (09 January 2020 - 11:37 AM)

I mean, it is easier to protect HDDs, and you can retransfer the data over and over forever?

@  NotVeryKnightly : (09 January 2020 - 10:45 AM)

Not in this comparison. He's making his own files, so they're (presumably) not restricted by DRM, so he can copy them as many times as he wants. It's potentially more reliable in the long term than hoping the specific copies you originally bought never accrue any damage for the rest of your life.

@  Echowarrior : (09 January 2020 - 10:44 AM)

I prefer physical copies too. Easier to protect something physical and tangible.

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 09:55 AM)

I prefer having physical copies.

@  Tm_Silverclaw : (09 January 2020 - 08:56 AM)

I have plenty of physical media I turn into digital media for my plex server. Just finished ripping Ultra Seven

@  fourteenwings : (09 January 2020 - 08:50 AM)

Isn't the general consensus that we're supposed to be over physical media anyways?

@  Paladin : (09 January 2020 - 08:17 AM)

i still don't own a Blu-Ray player.

@  TheMightyMol... : (09 January 2020 - 07:35 AM)

My current TV works just fine. I don't see a need to upgrade. And by the time I do, the Next Big Thing will probably be out anyway.

@  Benbot : (09 January 2020 - 03:58 AM)

Me neither. I'm no rebel, though. I'm just poor.

@  Maximus Ambus : (09 January 2020 - 03:38 AM)

I haven't gone 4K yet, I'm a rebel.

@  Ashley : (07 January 2020 - 11:50 PM)

the comic theme is amazing

@  Bass X0 : (07 January 2020 - 03:18 PM)

Sounds like Victor Caroli but I’m not sure.

@  Bass X0 : (07 January 2020 - 02:35 PM)

Should I recognise the narrator of the Mutant Hunt trailer?

@  Maximus Ambus : (07 January 2020 - 04:30 AM)

I got me Titans Return Blaster, now watch them unveil Earthrise Blaster and Generations Perceptor, a retool of Titans Blaster.

@  ThunderWear : (06 January 2020 - 10:22 PM)

I recently switched to to the comic theme here at the Allspark and I'm so happy I just want to look at it.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (06 January 2020 - 08:12 AM)

Can you not take so many lines to say anything?

@  fourteenwings : (06 January 2020 - 07:47 AM)

Iunno, maybe people having unique pronunciations of things re:how they understand language makes the world a more colourful place, rather than one where we correct every seemingly grievous error?

@  Nevermore : (06 January 2020 - 06:12 AM)

Others insist on "Michael Yackson".

@  Nevermore : (06 January 2020 - 06:01 AM)

Because the very combination of those sounds is unknown to them, and thus they avoid it as if it were contagious.

@  Nevermore : (06 January 2020 - 06:00 AM)

For example, the English "J" sound consists of sounds that exist in German: Basically, it's just a "d" sound followed by a very soft "sh". Yet there are many Germans who insist on calling the late King of Pop "Michael Checkson".

That's probably the most apropos. XD

Woooow. You know, I've never really hated Microsoft, but that brings me a lot closer to it...

The whole benefit of dealing with Windows is the open flexibility of the most supported OS on the market. There's no way they don't know exactly what they're doing.

Yeah, they're continuing to push and see how much of their 95% dominance of desktops they can maintain while trying to get the iOS and Android's software store markup revenue (all three take the same 30% cut) as well as control over their users and their data. But of course, iOS manages it by the fact that people buying an iDevice are coming into it at a certain level of buy-in, a self-selected minority. Android manages it by keeping a hidden option around to allow installing from other sources to make the store more palatable in concept, while making the store experience really attractively good. (Likewise Google's browser, search, and other services that are already the most popular in their areas, so Google don't have the pressure to lock users in.)

And of course, the Play Store and the App Store also both have enough market penetration to be very attractive to developers and get software that users want, something that the Windows Store has never managed.

It generally makes a fair bit of sense that Microsoft is struggling with this. They desperately wanted to get in on iOS and Android's model, so they released a perpetual, free-updates OS that they variously offered free to users in the first round, meaning they didn't just opt out of immediate sales, but locked themselves into a model where they wouldn't be getting future ones. I don't know what their deals with OEMs have been like and how much a Dell or an Acer is paying to include Windows preinstalled on their machines (undoubtedly less now for S), but that's their only big revenue stream now and there's a limit to how much they can push before those OEMs start looking for alternatives.

I realize that as a commercial, proprietary software company they have to make money somewhere in all of this, but it's an extremely ugly way to do it and just reeks of anti-competitive behavior and trying yet again to leverage their dominance over the whole desktop software industry.

A nice breakdown:

https://www.youtube....h?v=mwZJPrgVncU

So, everything that differentiates Windows 10 S is meant to lock users into MS's revenue streams. You can't install apps from outside the Windows Store. You can't install an alternate web browser, because Microsoft doesn't allow competing browsers in the store anymore, unless they use Edge's rendering and JavaScript "standards" (so Google could write a Chrome for the Store again, but it'd be Edge in a hat.) You can't change the default search engine from Bing.

Everywhere it's being targeted right now, there's the option of a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro (not Home, incidentally.) If you buy an MS Surface or you're an educator buying a case of cheap classroom laptops, you get a free upgrade. But the upgrade itself without a deal is $50.

They're billing it as a "security" deal, but I'm getting used to the idea that literally whenever Microsoft refers to "security" measures, the "security" means "anti-competition".

The fact that the upgrade has a price tag on it means that it's definitely not going to be free in all cases in the future. It's going to be the Windows 10 that comes pre-installed on low-end devices, the $200 laptops and tablets at Walmart. So pay your $50, or the only software you ever install to that device will be the software Microsoft gets a cut of, and Microsoft alone gets to mine all your browsing data. Since 90% of users don't care, they're going to go for the second option. Not that it matters, MS wins either way, and it's just subtle enough they might get away with it unlike their similar attempt with Windows RT during 8, when they instead had confused buyers returning RT machines in buckets because they wouldn't run their programs.

I like the observation that in the real world, S means "special" or "sport". Microsoft hasn't said it stands for anything in particular, but the implication is "secure". Sort of like calling it GT but the GT stands for Gimped Trash.

Wow. Get hugged, Microsoft!

I hope businesses are smart enough not to buy into this shit because I always buy used business grade laptops.

No, it's different. The Creators Update is just a codename-like brand for one of the big semiannual system updates. Windows 10's cycle is what would be called a semi-rolling update cycle in the Linux world - there are small, iterative updates being rolled out consistently, but also big, staged updates that will tend to contain any big changes to how the system operates. These are roughly equivalent to macOS (or Ubuntu or anything else) release versions, so CU would be like Windows 10.4.

CU is getting flak for being even less privacy-friendly than prior versions of Windows. I find the distinction difficult to perceive myself. It's already rolled out if your updating on the main update track.

Windows 10 S is another license version of Windows, like the usual Home edition that ships with PCs and the Pro that's meant for enterprise applications and ships with some high-end machines. As the Starter equivalent, it's a less permissive version of the system than Home, so it goes S -> Home -> Pro. But you can't upgrade S to Home, only to Pro for the full $50 that upgrade costs.

What's ugly about it is 1) the nature of the restrictions and 2) that they're trying to bill it as a security and performance deal, which it's just not; it's a way for MS to stop giving away Windows for free again, while still reaping most of the benefits of doing so.

It has no effect on current Windows systems - if you already have a license, you're fine. I don't know if it's even possible to downgrade an install or license to S (like you might want to if it was a security and performance thing, which it isn't.)

Edit:

Wow. Get hugged, Microsoft!

I hope businesses are smart enough not to buy into this shit because I always buy used business grade laptops.

That's going to be the most frustrating thing, people in businesses or schools stuck with it because their institution decided to run S, because they think it's more secure and is also cheaper, and then their users are unable to do basic things because their machines are so painfully locked down.

Edit a second time, unrelated: I cannot get over how amazing the GNOME desktop team really are. I had a fiddly UX question about the file manager - remember ages ago when I mentioned that thing about the Open With menu? I dropped in this morning (UK time) to ask about it, since nothing was mentioned in the design roadmap page for the application. I got an explanation, I had one of the lead design heads talking to me about it, he brought in another designer who'd worked on it specifically, and the second guy laid out the plan for how it was going to be addressed. In the process, they asked for feedback and a couple of other people chimed in, so we just had a discussion about how the feature was used and things. I just never had any idea software developers could be this friendly and open.

Yeah, that feeling that, "wow, this software really is designed by human beings" just keeps taking me by surprise. It's really cool. = ] Like, there's a new "Usage" app that's like - on Android, if you go to Settings and then hit Apps, and you get an overhead view of 1) what's running, but also 2) memory and storage usage by individual apps, etc., anyone ever looked at that? Usage is like a cross between that and the new Task Manager that was introduced in Windows 10. Not the most exciting thing in principle - hard to explain why I'm excited about such a thing beyond that, considering it's a weird little amenity no one regularly sees - but it's something that appeals enough to my design sensibilities enough to get me a little hype. At any rate, something I was looking forward to seeing it based on the design whiteboard.

But then I happened to be around in the IRC when a couple of people were brainstorming about the design for the app's icon, and one of them was proposing sketches - just seeing that in action was really cool. = D It makes me really psyched to see this system and project continue to evolve. And maybe even sometimes be able to give some useful input!

I assume it was just really good timing that I asked a question about something that folks were working on somewhere at the time. Alternatively, I brought it up and someone decided that was a good thing to work on today. Either way, it seemed like an impressive turnaround on that mockup. XD I don't know when it'll be implemented or anything like that, but damn.

Sounds like fun! I have to admit I've never played with a lot of vintage OSes, but it's always interesting to see. (And usually, if I'm playing with an OS of any kind, it's just been in a VM, not running as a hardware install.) So, yeah, sounds like fun, and always interested to see your results!

Well just in the past couple of days I went to crazy extremes, installing both the oldest (Windows 98) and newest (Windows 10) OSes NetBurst can handle on a pair of Dell OptiPlexes!

98 took a few tries to get working but it's currently stable, and Windows 10 is mostly stable...except it crashes with a NMI HARDWARE VIOLATION whenever you shut the computer down. Wonder if maybe the "literally pulled out of a hugging junk box" graphics card is bad. It didn't LOOK bad after I cleaned it, and I do get video through the DVI ports on the card, but something isn't right here. Maybe I need to install a shitload of Windows 10 updates...and the 98 machine could use all of the updates released for 98 too, though I dunno how I'd set up a batch of every Windows update for quick(er) installing.

Ha, awesome. What vintage are the OptiPlexes? (That's a long-running line, and still running.)

The 98 machine is an OptiPlex GX260 (circa 2003, Pentium 4 "Northwood" 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM configured in msconfig to 512MB), the Win10 machine is an OptiPlex GX620 (circa late 2005/early 2006, Pentium D "Presler" 3.4GHz, 4GB RAM).

Had to upgrade the GX620 from its original "Prescott" Pentium 4 to run Win10 64-bit but it runs it surprisingly well!
