It seems like, with these kind of things, anything not TF-specific is either in an existing thread or just not discussed since they're not part of something deemed important enough to get its own thread already.

@  Benbot : (19 July 2019 - 12:45 PM)

Yeah, but it's for Transformers specifically

@  Gryllid : (19 July 2019 - 12:39 PM)

There is. It's called "SDCC 2019 thread"

@  Benbot : (19 July 2019 - 12:24 PM)

no general SDCC thread?

I never even bothered to see it.

O never hated it, the whole thing was an Indiana Jones movie. I didn't care for the CGI, but that's just nature of the beast.

@Sabrblade Depends on when you're here. I used to have the backups happen once daily, now I have them happen once per hour so you might often see a hesitation at the top of every hour for 30-45 seconds.

And lastly, if it becomes too much hassle to deal with - it might just get sent into the cornfield and replaced with a Discord box anyway. So cool it.

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Second thing is we do actually have the ability to ban users specifically from using Shoutbox if it's being abused like that

@  Kalidor : (16 July 2019 - 12:55 PM)

Hey all - just a reminder and heads up. The Shoutbox has been kept here as a courtesy because it's what you folks like in lieu of Discord - but a few things to remember is that P&R should stay in P&R and isn't really something that needs to be dragged out here in the most public of spaces.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 11:04 AM)

Done.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 10:25 AM)

You can make a new one. I doubt anybody would stop you.

@  Nevermore : (16 July 2019 - 10:16 AM)

There was a thread but it appears to have disappeared. Might have been lost in one of the older forum sweeps.

@  NotVeryKnightly : (16 July 2019 - 09:58 AM)

Yeah this is pretty much circumventing the fact that we have different rules for political talk.

@  fourteenwings : (16 July 2019 - 09:55 AM)

Okay, so, basically, can we not do politics in here anymore? I mean, considering how often @Nevermore, you talk about your work conditions, don't you think it's time for a dedicated thread in P&R?

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:39 AM)

Scratch that; that's insulting to honest salads. Whatever that was was the text equivalent of hamburger.

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:38 AM)

Would you like some dressing to go with your word salad?

@  Paladin : (16 July 2019 - 09:34 AM)

yes; it now goes "shit piss hug *BLEEP* ^$@^ motherhuger **** turd fart encyclopedia & Socialism."

@  unluckiness : (16 July 2019 - 09:24 AM)

This is an American site, but isn't that unnecessarily severe language? IIRC it's one of the top four offensive pejoratives to English people

@  SHIELD Agent 47 : (16 July 2019 - 08:52 AM)

It's amusing how so many (U.S.) wankers in this world love to whine "capitalism good socialism bad!" in the abstract while simultaneously pretending that megacorporations dominating de facto monopolies is anathema to the core capitalistic principle of competition benefits everyone.

All they have to do is lose the reboot angle and just create a decent enough plot and comedy to carry the new all female team. They don't need the original cast back in my opinion but they don't need to reboot the series either. It's something that been irking me with returning properties lately. Sure some are tough to bring in a new cast and keep the old narrative flowing. Robocop would of been a bit more awkward if there was Murphy and than a new Robocop as well (though didn't the TV miniseries do that?). But as said the entire loop in to tie this is already in play thanks to the Franchise deal in story and they really don't even need to reference the video game at all. It would be that easy to use that.

I'm perfectly fine with an all female Ghostbusters cast. People like Kristen Wiig, Emma Stone, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, Kate McKinnon, and Amy Acker would all make great characters in that world.

I really don't like the idea of a reboot. Everybody in the world has seen the first Ghostbusters, we don't need a rehashing of that story.

The most alarming aspect of this for me is Paul Feig, who I think is a wildly overrated director who's right on the border of being a straight up hack. I can't imagine him making any of the sci-fi/horror aspects work, since he's a "that fat person fell down, isn't that HILARIOUS?" guy. He and the screenwriter of The Heat writing the story is far and away the aspect that most makes me think this will be bad.

I was kind of hoping after Harold Ramis died they'd just leave the property alone, but in my heart I know movie making politics are far too cynical for that to ever happen.

Yeh my entire issue with this is the director and the screenwriter - not great pedigrees.

My issue with women and reboots aren't even on the list. Does it need a reboot? not really but hollywood has done everything else so why not.

It seems like someone should give GBFANS.com the terrible news that Ghostbusters 1 and 2 and the game REALLY DIDN'T ever happen and this doesn't change that.

Continuity is becoming a bigger and bigger thing in fiction these days dude, so many writers have cashed in on it, this in turn is passed along to the fans.

For me I am gutted that the days of the original ghostbusters are done, but they haven't been removed from time - they're just finished, and we did get what a lot of people didn't in the form of a game which was really ghostbusters 3. But I think what saddens me the most is there was no send off, no final story.

That's a tough one. I think that the new Spider-Man films were trapped specifically because of a reboot so soon after the previous film. However, I can also think for one hell of a good reason to go with a reboot and not a continuation of old films: Superman Returns.

The idea just reminds me of those horror stories about how you hear of Hollywood moguls with insane agendas, like that one producer who tried to put giant spiders in everything and finally got his way with Wild, Wild West.

Female Ghostbusters could work (Kylie was great in Extreme), but this sounds less like a story/character pitch and more like some TG fan art you'd find on deviantArt.

The cast being all-female gives me more hope for this, because it creates an obvious difference that makes it feel more like they're making a new movie instead of just remaking the old one. After all, a reboot doesn't have to be a remake = just look at how different all the Transformers reboots are, for example. Hopefully this is basically just a new Ghostbusters movie that's going to be its own thing and will be a reboot not to remake the original but because a) it means not having to stick to what the old ones did, and b) reboots are popular and seem more accessible than a sequel to a decades-old series.

Besides, even if they do make a reboot (and it actually turns out to be a good movie.) the fans will interpret it any damn way they please and "logic" it into the overall continuity within a few hours of the first showing.

Frankly: I think we're going to get something at this point. What it is and how good it is remains to be seen. Fine, we've got writers and directors of questionable pedigree and hollywood in general hasn't been wowing audiences by taking the safest paths and simply remaking everything they know made money. But they can still surprise us, all it really takes is one or two folks on the set that are truly passionate about the material and we'll get something decent.

But the original team was an all dude cast?

In fairness, weren't three of those dudes the ones whose idea it was in the first place, with the fourth being a stand-in for their friend?

The original was practically a vanity picture of sorts; it doesn't sound like this one is, though.

I like the idea of female Ghostbusters.  I love the idea of an ALL female team.

I'm even into not featuring any of the original team in the movie: I'd much rather let a new team have a chance to stand on their own without the new team having the lingering shadow of the old one over them in the context of the movie and allow the fates of those characters to remain left to the imagination. Let people imagine, despite Bill Murray's disinterest and Harold Ramis' passing, that Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston are still out there, doing their thing, without invoking something like Indy 4's scene with photos of the departed on a desk.  Don't give the original team finality.

...buuuuttt I'm not sure I see the need for a reboot when Ghostbusters II has already proven the entirety of New York City can will itself into ignoring the existence of ghosts within a timeframe of five years in the wake of supernatural near-armageddon at the hands of a god in the form of a giant snackfood.  Or when The Game provided a nice "out" to follow a new team in a new context in the form suggesting they turn Ghostbusters into a franchise.  I guess it depends on the story they want to tell, but right now knowing nothing else it feels like a missed opportunity to keep building a world, especially when every other bit of spin-off media has used the first two films in-canon.

Wasn't the only thing to play with the franchise idea; so did the old table-top RPG.

An all the female cast could work, if they don't overplay the whole "we're independant women doing it better than the boys".

Rebooting makes no sense though. Why reintroduce and retell the creation of the "Ghostbusters", when you can skip all that and just focus on this new female squad. To me it just makes the ALL FEMALE casting more gimmicky and more stunt casting.

As has been said, the existing Ghostbusters universe has female Busters in iy and they work fine.

So yeah, female Busters? Sure. Reboot and new origin? No thanks.

In practical terms, there's not a big difference between "establish these characters, they go into ghostbusting" and "establish these characters, they go into ghostbusting (which other people have done before)".

Whether the cast is male, female, white, black, gay or straight makes no difference to me. I find Melissa McCarthy kind of obnoxious and wouldn't want her in the line up, however.

But I echo the sentiments that there's no need for a reboot. It's easy enough to pick the story up several decades later and have the past history flesh out the lore in the new stories to be told. Like what Doctor Who did (and to some extent the new Star Trek movies)

I'll be okay with it. So long as there's a girl as geeky as Egon. But how hard is it to say the old team disbanded when Egon died. And these girls restart if on their own. But them meet peter, Winston and Ray. At some point.

But the old dudes just make a cameo as mentors.

But yes, this shouldn't be sexiefied. They need to be real geeky average women.

If it has a good story and capable actors I don't care.

I don't see the need for a reboot, OR and all Female cast, but the latter one isn't a big deal breaker for me cause Ghostbusters to me was a buddy film at heart and well as long as three of the four female leads are written as close friends I really don't see why it would be a big deal.  One of them has to be an egomaniac who hits on every guy she sees though cause Venkman. (I'm joking)
