There are a few "bad writing" quirks that pop up each episode. But I have to say I honestly like this season and there's a lot of cool stuff. I just wish they'd get their pacing together.

Man, I am ******* sick of tragedy porn in Star Trek. Everything doesn’t have to be sunshine and rainbows all the ******* time but seriously. Season 1 we get to see Seven kill Icheb to spare him DYING OF TORTURE and here we have DEAD MOM. Which, honestly, I’m having a fairly big problem with vis-à-vis the Picard family stuff. Did you know Picard had a Brother? You’d be forgiven if you didn’t since he hadn’t made a single ******* appearance or even merited a single mention despite his family literally falling apart around him. They added dialog to explain away Picard’s hallucination in “Where No One Has Gone Before” but they can’t mention or show he has an entire ******* sibling?

I’m also struggling to reconcile Maurice’s preferred treatment of “locking her in a room” being AT ALL preferable to having FREE mental health assistance there IN AN INSTANT. One of the many times I feel like the writers write like Picard had a childhood in our Universe and time period rather than “essentially” Utopia in the late 2200’s.

Also, while I have Icheb on the mind, he seemed to join Starfleet just fine! Super weird to not at all reference or try and explain away…

Overall this is miles better than the first season but that stuff really bugs me and I don’t know how they’re going to pull off the ending short of Ques Ex Machina

Yeah, I have it as my head cannon that Robert, being the older son, is off at boarding school while Jean Luc was kept home to keep his mother happy/company. I am hoping that we might see something of Robert in the last episode. I caught that line about him envsioning his mother in TNG too. Great way to address it.

Freaking Baltar is killing it in this season as Maurice.

I wonder why the federation didn't want 7? Maybe because she had spent so much time with the Borg while Icheb wasn't even fully assimilated and was a new species.

I don't know why Robert hasn't been seen, but given that the episode that introduced him is where so many of the concepts for Picard (the chateau, to use only the most obvious example) came from in the first place, there's no way that the writers simply forgot about him when putting the season together. It's easy enough for me to acknowledge that he simply didn't have a part to play in the story they wanted to tell. I don't have to see him to believe that he still exists somewhere off-screen.

Which is fine. I don’t need him to be in every scene but even a sentence of Picard going “This was the summer Robert was away at boarding school” would’ve negated the entire issue.

Which they did to explain away a single hallucination so it’s super weird priorities they wouldn’t do the same for a sibling IMO.

You're right. They did make that reference to the hallucination. But my contention is, they didn't have to, and I refuse to get up in arms every time they don't do something they didn't have to do in the first place.

A missing child/sibling from the story is a pretty big issue. Like his mom talks about how important Jean Luc is to her, but Robert is nowhere to be seen.

Like I said, its a plot hole that gets increasingly larger considering how tightly they are focusing on Picard's young family life.

I am hopeful at the end, Picard has changed his future to where the key wasn't there as a child. So when he comes back to his present day, he runs into Robert and Renee when coming into the chateau.

What, and invalidate that "blink and you miss it" drama from the hit Star Trek: Generations movie?

I'd be 100% down for that nonsense getting retconned, but honestly Picard's in this weird place of being wish fulfillment fantasy for Picard himself (Gets to say Goodbye to Data, is magically cured of his illness and is now a synth, etc) while being incredibly tragic to the Star Trek universe as a whole and bluntly speaking, Picard doesn't need any more wins under his belt.

It's really not. It's not relevant to THIS story at all. It's only something we know about because of the old series.

But that is the thing though, we know he exists, and he should be there. At least they could have had some explanation of where the 9 year old boy is when not with his family. If he had been there, he could have affected what Jean luc was doing, and would have too. Remember he was the bully that had to take care of his little brother.

I don't dispute they could have done this. I wouldn't have minded if they had, certainly. I'm just not all that upset that they didn't.

That’s it for the season. I largely enjoyed it. MUCH better than season 1 but that’s not saying much. A lot of stuff I feel wasn’t adequately explained. WHY was Q dying? What’s the deal with Jorgrati? Is she the full Borg collective now? Is she a Borg offset while the regular Borg still exist? As expected it was Ques Ex Machina back to the future. Rios staying behind wasn’t surprising but I’m glad they explained what happened since it was doubtful they’d all survive WWIII and the post-atomic horror otherwise. I think Rios would’ve enjoyed his death. A perfect send off. Kinda surprised they didn’t Easter egg the whole San Francisco thing when they got back. WESLEY!!! I loved that AND it explains why she has an android version as I assume she was put in charge of the Soong family. The Khan folder was pretty ******* stupid. Was it foreshadowing he’d work on genetics? He’s already been doing that the entire ******* season. How does he even *have* descendants since his daughter is off traveling. I was kinda hoping they’d do a credits stinger with some/all of the TNG crew but alas no. Overall I’d give the season a solid B-

I suspect he started to work on a government contract, where he would alter existing humans, rather than by using genetic code and birth them from scratch. This would then be "easier" and only require his existing skills, rather than all of his (now missing) research data.

His descendents would be any offspring he has in the future?

In my wildest imagination, I surmise that they fix a couple problems that have been bothering me by saying Q made Soong immortal and all the humans Spiner has played are actually the same guy, perhaps excepting AI.

2024 Soong strikes me as the sort of guy who has traditional biological kids but is extremely estranged from them.

That, or the later Soongs are descendants of his brother or cousin.

Interesting thought I just had while trying to reconcile the lack of biological offspring.

So, we know from the bullet holes that the entire thing is probably a pre-destination paradox. This is per Picard's statement that those are the same holes. Rios even asks it point blank. Also, per Queen Agnes, there are two possibilities: Soong dies forgotten and a drunk or he becomes a hero. Instead, his last scene ends with him reflective and looking at the Kahn file. Meaning that both possible timelines ended up not happening. The La Sirena's crew essentially created a third, alternative, and "how it was always supposed to happen timeline" with Soong now on a path for his somehow descendant Erik to get involved in the Enterprise era with Kahn 2.0 children. Does this lead Soong to procreate, whereas in the other two, "wrong" timelines he died childless?

To quote O'Brien, temporal mechanics gives me a headache.

Edit: thoughts on the finale

I don't have a ton of complaints about this season. I enjoyed it, though I do agree with most that the pacing was off. 5-6 episodes worth of plot spread out over 10. I feel like we deserved a 90 minute or extended finale to properly wrap everything up, so I was nervous when I saw that the episode would only ring in at 48 minutes. I teared up at Q's goodbye because it was very much John DeLancie saying goodbye to his character *AND* to us. Picard giving Q a hug felt appropriate, as Picard realized that (for whatever reason) Q cared for JL on a personal level. I liked Borg-less Annika, and Queen Jurati at the end felt like the natural evolution of the Borg. I would like to know how this alternate reality splinter Borg factors into the Prime timeline Borg: are they competing factions, did Queen Agnes absorb the lost and broken collective after Endgame? I figure the coming threat mentioned by Agnes will factor into Season 3. Wesley's appearance was a nice touch. Perhaps if I had one complaint, its that Whoopi-Guinan and Q never had an on-screen appearance together.

Final edit: Season 3
La Sirena is gone. They need a ship to fight this coming threat, something that all 7 TNG cast members can serve on together. Enterprise-E? Enterprise-F? We can't have 3 seasons of Picard and NO ENTERPRISE. Will Wesley appear with Kore in an episode, giving he and Beverly one final scene together? Too many production crew members from TNG are returning for this not to essentially be TNG Season 8. Agnes I can see as a guest star since we don't nee the Borg gatekeeper in every episode. What about Soji? Sidelined in place of Kore, sure, so what is the actresses role in Season 3? Will Beverly get jealous of Laris?

As far as Season 3 cast goes

Jurati, Soji/Kore, Elnor, and Rios have all said they aren’t in Season 3. Only Seven and Raffi haven’t said one way or the other but it’s definitely clearing the deck for the TNG cast. Which kinda has to sting for the regular cast.
