Honestly… Voting in the States this year feels like it’ll do something. Have an effect. Stop actual badness happening. Over here, the Labour Party is mirroring the Conservatives exactly, using the same anti-poor and anti-foreigner rhetoric, junking all their reformist policy ideas (extra...

    Reproductive rights thread

I was thinking about what’d happen if the GOP enact a federal ban of contraceptives. I mean, to be blunt, among other issues, it wouldn’t do the tourism industry much good, would it? I don’t think many adults of virile age would like to go on holiday/vacation to a place where having a packet of...

    Ranting about quebec: newspark edition!

Honestly, I think of the Canadian Liberals as more like the US Democrats: Big corporate neoliberal party, but more progressive-friendly than their main rival. They’ve both enacted social and political reforms that have raised living conditions of the regular people, but also not really done...

Yerwot, mate? Not accusations. Just pointing out that phrase you repeated is as sinister as it comes. And I’ve seen it used in some awful ways by the crooked lot in charge of my own country to justify the unjustifiable. (Left wing government, though? Really? Aren’t the Liberals just another big...

For years now I have expected Trump’s lawyers to play the Uncle Junior defence. The longer he legal issues go on, the more inevitable it seems. I mean, this isn’t an ageist statement, but he appears cognitively impaired in some way. I agree with @Rhinox that it wouldn’t make a difference to...

    Ranting about quebec: newspark edition!

“The will of the people” is what the Tory government(s) here have been shrieking for the last nearly eight years, using it to justify xenophobia, austerity and draconian laws. Absolutely hateful phrase.

Possibly, as long as it covered prescription medications. I don’t quite know the history of why the Canadian system doesn’t cover pharmacare at a provincial or federal level. Presumably the intention was there, but it was never implanted with the rest of it? Or the right-leaning parties never...

They don’t. Their universal healthcare system is actually rather threadbare when compared to European equivalents. As far as I’m aware, some provinces have their own programmes for covering medication, but not free or universal.

We live in a capitalist dystopia

@wonko the sane? I remember we had Safeways here. Closed down about 20 years ago, and Morrisons bought up the former stores to expand southwards, when they were primarily a northern supermarket chain. Also heard of IGA, somehow. Quick research reveals that it exists in the States too, so I...

We live in a capitalist dystopia

Aren’t Costco those huge warehouse places, rather than a regular supermarket? Google reveals we have Costco in the UK now, but the ‘nearest’ outlets to my location are few and distant. (Serious question, in North America do you have national supermarket chains? I know that the giant warehouse...
