Hasbro to phase out plastic from new toy and game packaging starting 2020
Hasbro has issued a press release that announces a phaseout of plastic use from new toy and video game packaging beginning in 2020, a transition that will be completed in 2022. This includes “polybags, elastic bands, shrink wrap, window sheets and blister packs”, and covers their flagship toylines including — as noted in the release — Nerf, My Little Pony, Monopoly, Magic: The Gathering, and Power Rangers.
Hasbro chairman and CEO Brian Goldner notes that the company has “an experienced, cross-functional team in place to manage the complexity of this undertaking and will look to actively engage employees, customers, and partners as we continue to innovate and drive progress as a leader in sustainability.”
Prior moves from Hasbro toward sustainability include the elimination of wire-ties, the use of How2Recycle labeling and the shift to plant-based bioPET. Most recently, Hasbro started a toy recycling program called TerraCycle.
