Cartoon Network and Warner Brothers to Launch ThunderCats Roar
A video launched on Facebook and an article from Entertainment Weekly reveal a new comedy cartoon series based on the iconic 80s cartoon ThunderCats. The show will be the first return of the ThunderCats to TV since the canceled 2011 series.
Entertainment Weekly provides this synopsis:
Staying true to the premise of the original series, Lion-O and the ThunderCats — Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, Wilykat, and Wilykit — barely escape the sudden destruction of their home world, Thundera, only to crash land on the mysterious and exotic planet of Third Earth. Lion-O, the newly appointed Lord of the ThunderCats, attempts to lead the team as they make this planet their new home. A bizarre host of creatures and villains stand in their way, including the evil Mumm-Ra, Third Earth’s wicked ruler who will let nothing, including the ThunderCats, stop his tyrannical reign over the planet.
Meanwhile, producer Victor Courtright explains the direction for the show in the video below, which also includes a skit featuring the new Lion-O and the series’ opening title sequence. Courtright expresses his need to stay true to the original series and shows some affection for elements of the property, but also explains that it’s a premise that lends itself to comedy.
The skit features Lion-O puzzled that the viewer doesn’t “know what a ThunderCat is”, and it’s hard not to share his puzzlement – ThunderCats hasn’t had much exposure since the original series ended in 1989, so for the apparent primary demographic of Roar, this series will be a first exposure to the franchise.
We can only assume that simply calling the series “ThunderCats Ho!” would have rung a little too familiar.
