Netflix Launches The Toys That Made Us Documentary Series

On Friday, Netflix launched a new documentary series, The Toys That Made Us, that offers a deep dive into the toy franchises that shaped the industry and our childhoods – covering Star Wars, G.I. Joe, He-Man, and Barbie, with Transformers coming next year.

Unlike other documentaries that lean toward fandom and modern markets, or the cultural impact of these monolithic properties, the series makes a point of its focus on the toys and the creative and business process behind them, tracking down the original creators and decision makers to document the history behind these icons. In an interview with Inverse, creator Brian Volk-Weiss explains that the research for the show involved 309 interviews in six countries.

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, check out the four episodes available so far, then join our discussion on the series on the Allspark Forums.
